It also complements the setting along the Charles River quite well. It is across from the Charles River Coffee shop, allowing my perfect morning of getting breakfast, checking out a book and reading it overlooking the waterfall (inside the library if the weather is not quite right or down at the waterfall otherwise.) In the basement is the historical society museum. Again, this is a great stop if you are interested in local history, or if you just want a low-key place to spend the day. If you have children, keep an eye out for the story hour flag that is outside when stories are being read inside.

My most favorite library ever!…read more Firstly (and probably least importantly) it is in a great old building (but no disabled access, just so as you know). The library itself is pretty much one big room. Which is kind of my favorite part. Because you can bring your kids in, and while they look at kids books/play with toys you can look at books for YOURSELF! Yes, adult books! At most libraries trying to take your young kids to the adult section can be trying. There is no time to look at books. If your kids are really young they're probably running/crawling away or pulling books off shelves. If they're older they are probably bored and fighting. Or asking endless questions. No time to browse there! But at the Bacon Free library they can look at the kids books (or play with toys) while you look at the adult books. My real actual favorite part though, is the staff. They are super friendly and very accepting. And they know their stuff too. You can say "so I heard a bit on the radio the other day about this book that sounded really interesting. I'm not sure who it's by or what the title is, but it was about..." And chances are they'll know what you're talking about. I'm sure other libraries have nice staff too, but due to the small and intimate size of the Bacon Free Library you really get to see and interact with the staff (and like I said they're super helpful!) Now they don't have all the books in the world (although they do have thousands). But they can request any book for you through the Minuteman Catalog, and send you an email once it arrives and is ready for pick up. They have many programs. Our favorites are story hour (Wed & Fri at 10am). Many kids programs at other libraries require you to sign up in advance, and also limit the ages of the children. Which is VERY frustrating if you have kids of mixed ages. What are you meant to do with the other kid while one is in story hour? At the Bacon Free Library it's simple - everyone is welcome! No sign up necessary, just show up at 10am. Art for all (one Friday a month 3-5pm) is also great. The only downside are the hours - they're not open every day at the same hour (budget cuts - they're only there part time now). Check out the website for the hours before you go.

After returning back to Hyde Park I maintained residency in Hyde Park because I love this city. I am a full-time college student and a single parent of two. I love the children's floor they have and I am at the library a minimum of three times a week and for hours on end each visit. Today while reading and taking notes there was a young woman and man who I believe work here that were talking at the circulation desk. At this point I have been here for about 2 and a half hours and they have been there taking the while time. A woman walks in looking for a book she left here the night before. As it turns out she couldn't check the book out for whatever reason and the librarian on duty told her she would hold it for her for the next day. That specific librarian was on her lunch break and the younger woman "barely" looked for the book before she told the patron she couldn't find it. The patron seemed agitated not fully understanding the situation, in my opinion. The patron kept repeating, "she said she would eave it for me". The younger woman said she is on her lunch break come back in a hour and the patron repeated her previous statement. The younger woman then said, "well I don't know what to tell you I can't find it. She will be back in a hour from lunch come back then". As a social worker I was appalled by the treatment that this patron received at the library today. It appeared in my opinion that the patron may have had some cognitive delays and couldn't understand why they couldn't just reach out to the librarian in question and ask her where the book was. Without a second thought the younger woman went right back into her conversation while I sat at my computer in awe. This will not stop me from coming to this library but if I had a closer option for me and my children I would leave this branch and never look back.

I'm writing this review hoping a staff member will see it and take action to improve the customer…read moresatisfaction. The place is great (really close to my house and for that I'm grateful). Clean tables and floors, nice staff. However, every time I go into the library to study I end up really annoyed by 2 things: 1. There are very few ( I think only 1) electrical outlets near the tables. This makes no sense because most people nowadays study with laptops and carry their chargers around. So many times I have been forced to either leave or wait for the one table that is next to the plug to be emptied, so I can go ahead and connect my charger. It would be nice if they can add more outlets. 2. The most annoying thing however, is to study in this library after 3pm on weekdays. The reason is that mothers or nannies come with the little kids that have just gotten out of school, apparently to spend time. The kids start running, screaming at the top of their lungs and nothing is done about it by either the parents or the staff. I think the library staff could bring it to the attention of the parents, rather than let the screaming kids disrupt study time for the rest of us.

Since it is Boston, parking was scarce and it was a hassle (the parking lot they do have is for employees only). After a couple minutes of driving around, I found side street parking and walked about 3 minutes. The inside of the library is modern, clean, and bright; they have a lot of overhead lights but the large windows let in a lot of the natural sunlight. I liked that they had a couple tables and some seats along the windows looking out. I sat at one of the comfy chairs in this area. I didn't do much exploring but the main desk with librarians was at the center of the library; very convenient and central location. The downside of the open floor plan was that it wasn't the quietest library, but it also wasn't difficult to concentrate. They had a decent amount of books. I think it is only one floor only. It is handicapped accessible since the entrance is one long and wide corridor and the space between book shelves does seem wide enough. They do close early--6 pm on a weekday--compared to my library back home. Based on the number of kids I heard and see walk in with their guardians, I assume they have a lot of kid friendly activities or at least an area for kids.

It has a large kids room with books from infant up through adolescent, and the rest of the book selection is sizeable, if not the Library of Congress. Many people talk about the move towards the internet and digital consumption in the same breathe as…read morelibraries being less relevant. This could not be further from the truth. Libraries in general are providing more services than ever and Southborough Library is a perfect example of this. They offer so many things to do and so many resources - all with a smile and passion for what they do. Admittedly we spend most of our time in the Childrens section with our kids but the breadth and quality of offerings from art to entertainment to special events is extraordinary and all for free. A really great resource in both the traditional and modern sense.
