West Port's a wee "neighbourhood" slash "community" sandwiched between the seedy Pubic Triangle and the trendy Grassmarket, right behind the Edinburgh College of Art and minutes (small minutes) away from the Farmer's Market.
It's the home of many a second hand bookshop, i.e. Andrew Pringle's, Edinburgh Books, Old Town Bookshop, Peter Bell Books, etc. It's also the home of many a classy vintage shop, for example, Godiva and Herman Brown's. These vintage shops are pricier than the bookshops, please note.
Its name comes from the fact that it used to lead to the only westward exit from the city, though there's nothing remaining of that anymore. It took me a while to discover this neighbourhood, as in people used to say "West Port" to me and I'd shrug my shoulders in ignorance (which is now a reaction I get from people when I say "West Port"), but I'm very happy I've finally discovered it properly.
Don't come to Edinburgh without going to West Port. It'd be a real shame. read more
