Like plenty of people who quickly stop at stores while running errands or heading to and from the gym, I don't always carry my full wallet. I generally rely on Apple Pay, which is convenient, secure, and widely accepted. And of course, I know that not all retailers accept it. That's fine, I can research that and plan ahead. Unfortunately, when I went to check out at this particular Dick's, I discovered that this location has an undisclosed limit on contactless transactions. My purchase was exactly $100, and the terminal refused the payment, saying it exceed the contactless payments. Even the staff were surprised and mystified by this. Crazy. Rather than make a second trip, I ordered the same items online for less money, with free delivery tomorrow. It's frustrating because I genuinely wanted to make the purchase in person. It was a gift and I would have preferred to have it in hand tonight. But I can deal with delivery tomorrow, even if it is from another retailer. The employees did everything right, but the payment system got in the way. At a time when brick-and-mortar retailers are competing with online shopping, making it harder for customers to spend money seems particularly counterproductive. Great staff, great selection, but a checkout policy that really needs reconsideration. In the meantime, don't forget your wallet or leave it in the console of your truck when you pop into Dick's.

REI is a Co-Op, so join, as it's a win-win for everyone…read more They have a really nice staff; the folks working there are into the outdoors. They like biking, hiking, camping, climbing and etc. they know the lingo, they know their merchandise, and they are always willing to help the customer. Hingham Derby Street Shops... well, parking is plentiful, I do tend to park in the back. Never jammed up back there. If you plan on buying anything, you will want to bring your own bag as the chain is 'bag free'. Prices are very good. Competitive with Amazon.com and better than Cabela's. I used to go to the store in Framingham when I was in metro west, also the store in Reading... I'm not sure if both are still there. Shopping since '96, Co-Op member since '12. No negatives,

They have basically anything you need for outdoors activities. I've usually shopped for hiking gear and camel backs or osprey / rei branded stuff. Also got a pair of hiking boots. I think it's cool REI is a coop brand. Member owned. They have plenty of sales going on, bicycles standard and electronic assisted, survival gear, clothing from all sorts of brands, boots and hiking gear, camping gear, lanterns, knives, paddles, water shoes, and also have deals on traded in gear. Nice experience. Love walking around and looking at stuff i probably don't need but it's a cool tool or utility purposed item.

REI has great outdoor brands and a decent selection. Prices range and things can be on the higher-end but it's no more expensive than the manufactures sites. We are looking for, among other things, a smaller tent (ours is huge) that we can easily lug around with us and REI has a large selection. We signed up for their membership several years ago. Just tell them your phone number when making a purchase and you get credit for the purchase. We picked up a UV protective t-shirt as a gift for someone. It was reasonably priced imho, very soft and moisture wicking. Brilliant. I should probably get myself one too. BTW, the company no longer offers bags. None. So bring a reusable bag if you plan to shop here. It's just another way to reduce waste and be a good steward. Some of the prices can be high, but not everything. They sell Patagonia which is an expensive brand, as well as other, more moderately priced items. You just have to know what you want and what you are willing to pay. If you check out the bulletin board upstairs, they offer guided excursions that look really fun. I check out their selection of hiking poles as I am looking to buy some. Everything from really reasonable basic models to foldable, light weight pricey models. So you have options. They have pet items. Personal care items. Clothes and shoes are upstairs. So many types of water bottles. Camping items for both the thru-hiker and the car-camper. Check them out. They are a good resource and the staff are friendly and happy to assist.

The folks who work here are so, so nice and helpful. Whether you're a seasoned pro looking for a second opinion or a newbie intimidated to ask the wrong question, ask away and they'll run through their encyclopedic list of knowledge with you. As you can guess from the name, they carry a million camp and hiking supplies, but even as a non-outdoorsy person, it's fun to browse. (My favorite purchase ended up being an ultra light dry bag backpack that came in handy on a trip to Bali in the rainy season.) They've got a wide selection of clothes that you'd wear everyday from Filson to Patagonia and Arcteryx. They've also got you covered for the wild outdoors of Back Bay with a great selection of raincoats and winter gear from brands like Marmot and Canada Goose. When possible, I'm really trying to shop here and support a local store instead of ordering everything from Amazon. For a small shop, they run some great sales, like 20% off all boots or 15% off all Canada Goose. It's impossible to believe HTC has only been here for a year or so -- it feels like it's been part of Central Square forever.
