So if you need something for your boat there's a good chance they have it or something that'll work. I've found the staff friendly and they ask if you need help. BUT, like several other reviews have stated the prices on many items are ridiculously high, while others are slightly high. You will find almost everything cheaper online. I realize they have overhead costs from the store, but c'mon. I've heard that owning a boat is a money pit....now I know why. I think I suffer a minor coronary followed by the murmuring of expletives every time I enter this store. The prices are RIDICULOUS. It is the only sailing/boating specialty store in the area so they have a serious monopoly on the goods. We always try to check prices on line before going if we absolutely need to buy something for the boat, otherwise we order anything we need on line from someone else- trust me, the price disparity is insane. Another problem I've had was with the management. One time we went, they offered a military discount... the next time, they didn't... or one employee told us they will price match, another said they didn't... Needless to say, it is clear they have some policy issues. The only reason this place is in business is because there are some old people for boat owners in Charleston that either A) don't use the Internet, or B) have so much money they're not really concerned with how much money they're spending at all, period. read more

Very pricey and you can get almost everything in the store for about half the price online but they are well-stocked they do have a lot of apparel got a wide selection and the staff is always generally helpful although I would not say that they are superb all in all it's okay I would give it 3 1/2 stars of possible. My husband and I visited this store today and experienced such wonderful customer service that we wanted to give a thumbs up to one sales associate in particular! Linda approached me in the shoe department and I told her that I had zero knowledge of non-slip footwear, but really needed them for work. She took the time to explain how the soles worked and showed me several pairs she felt would do the trick. She checked the fit and encouraged me to walk around to see if the shoes were comfortable. I bought two pair, and truly feel that I made a wise purchase and it's all due to Linda's help. Linda, thanks again for your patience and your very helpful input. As a sailor and customer of this store for many years I really love the store. The staff has always bent over backwards to help me out. I have to say that I am a wholesale purchaser with a Port Supply account that gives me better prices so that probably helps out a lot based on what I see of other reviews. I do know they have been very good about price matching. That can be a pain but with a good smart phone does not necessarily take too long. So, I love how convenient they are and a good selection of what I need for successful boating. To avoid sticker shock make sure to try to price match if prices are too high for you. read more

West Marine has pretty much put every other chandlery out of business. Back in the day, their prices were very aggressive, their stores were clean, bright and well organized, and their catalog was the best in the business. All of the foregoing still stands, but now their prices are aggressive in the other direction: at or even above list prices in many cases. However, they do cheerfully price match, so do your homework before you go in and you'll be ok. I ALWAYS check the price of the product I intend to buy at Defender.com before I go in and print out the quote. West Marine always meets it. Otherwise, West Marine stores are pretty good places to shop. Their staff is generally attentive and helpful, and they'll order in anything that they don't stock. read more
