What a beautiful day to come to this cute little park overlooking the beach where the Wedge is. It is a lovely place to meditate and be super unbelievably grateful to be here! Lots of cute dogs to pet and take photos of too!!

I don't know when this park was founded, but I've spent quite a few hours at the Wedge and on the west jetty itself without ever having seen it, so either I was a smart kid who knew that it was more fun to play in ridiculously dangerous surf and on almost-as-dangerous rocks than to sit on a bench on some grass, or it didn't exist in 1990. It's 2020 now, and I'm old. OK, I'm not that old, but I was with my parents, and no one in Orange County seemed to realize that there's a pandemic that doesn't care about your party affiliation or your God-given right to be negligently selfish or your shortsightedness. The fewer people that catch it, the better. That's true for everyone, but it's especially true for the people in this part of Orange County, who tend to be older. So wear a mask, even if you don't believe in it. It's true, we were the only people wearing masks, so we didn't want to venture onto the sand, and I didn't think my parents would enjoy the rocks. We did enjoy watching all the people in boats and yachts and paddle boards and outriggers and dinghies and catamarans going out to sea or coming back in. My mom and I reminisced on our time in the Ragamuffin--or was it the Green Boat?--with my brother and Buster (RIP), who was quite interested in the sea lions on the buoy at the mouth of the harbor. That moment has always stuck with me; who ever knew that my childhood dog would get within sniffing and tail-wagging (Buster) and barking (the sea lions) distance of a group of sea lions in their natural habitat? Those outbound boats were following in the fictional footsteps--er, wake?--of the SS Minnow, in case you didn't know. A three-hour tour, indeed. And while we didn't spend three hours here on that day, we did get our fill of the local scenery. The park is tiny, but it's well maintained, and the benches are nice. Nearby parking is impossible, but we came late in the afternoon, and we snagged a place about a quarter of a mile away. I doubt it's that easy at any other time. Balboa Peninsula always makes me a little bit sad because it's not how I remember it. I really am an old fogy, but in my defense, I don't only object to the existence of the change; I object mainly to the nature of that change. The place has grown richer, gaudier, more pretentious, and more exclusive. Exclusive is a bad word. If you don't think of it as a bad word, you've either never thought about what it means, or you're OK with excluding other people. In my mind, there's no difference between exclusive and exclusionary. I still feel comfortable in most non-gated parts of Newport Beach, but that's because I came here quite often as a kid, and I still feel strangely protected by the fact that even at that age I understood that having a lot of dollars didn't mean you had a lot of sense. As I've grown older, I've realized that the connection between dollars and sense is inversely proportionate, at least beyond a certain threshold; the more you have of one, the less you have of the other.

If you are a sunrise and a wave chaser , this is the spot, parking is free in this expensive neighborhood with a fantastic view of the bay and the ocean! Countless beautiful sunrise, here is a few!

Small and peaceful beach park, very chill at night, you can watch the wave and the other side is the city light of Newport Beach.

I found this place by accident when I rented a cruiser and made my way down to the eastern most tip of newport beach. It can be hard to find without a map because it's nestled in the middle of a residential neighborhood on east newport beach. Pros: * Amazing scenic views of the channel * Not crowded * Just a short bike ride away from the end of the boardwalk * Quiet neighborhood Cons: * Very small * No bathrooms * No parking The views alone almost give this place a perfect 5

I am a big fan of Newport beach for my family visits and for my photo studio shoots. My recent gig introduced me to Balboa Peninsula and led me to West Jetty View Park. Amazing beach with perfect wave for the surfers and bodyboarders! I went around 4pm and was til 7pm. The golden hour for photography. There were a lot more people than I expected but it was a saturday and with that in mind, it was not as bad as other beaches. The houses on our way to the park was to die for... Just sightseeing our way there was amazing! I went back there the next day with my family to share my awe with them. my kids loved the beach and its mesmerizing waves. On our way out of the park, we stopped for food. Overall, amazing place to take your family or with friends for a dip in the water and some beer on your way back!

Beautiful, quiet, and serene. The houses are beautiful and to die for. Great place to have a picnic and swim by the ocean. Hardly any people. Walk around the neighborhood to gawk at the beautiful houses. Parking are limited. Best time to go is on weekdays in the morning.

But our moms weren't within eyesight or earshot, so we ran and climbed and splashed and wrestled. It felt like every time I came here, I cut my hands or arms or shins on the rocks, but I didn't care, because I was learning independence, and I didn't dare complain in front of my friends. The sandy part of the beach itself can get completely swallowed by the high tide, so plan ahead. The Newport Harbor Jetty (and, to a lesser extent, the CDM State Beach Jetty) protect(s) the beach from waves, so there's no real bodyboarding or bodysurfing to be had. That's probably a good thing, too, because these rocks would be treacherous if this beach weren't completely enclosed within Newport Bay's entrance channel. The metal fences separating the deeper parts of the caves always scared me. I realized the fencing was to prevent children from getting where adults couldn't fit, because high tides could mean drowning or otherwise getting hurt, but it was still spooky. I believe my friend Michael tried to bend back the metal, but he couldn't, despite how rusty and old it seemed. The stairs down to the beach are much nicer and sturdier than they used to be. Otherwise, it looks and feels the same as it did thirty-five years ago.

There is a 5 minute walk from the parking lot to where the ferries are. You will have to cross a couple of streets. The ferries are pretty basic but they have capacity for 3 cars as well. Adults pay $2 each to get to the other side. They ONLY accept cash. There and back, the wait time was under a couple of minutes. The island itself is clean and serene. Other than a minimart, a fishing gear shop and a grocery store, there weren't any shops on the oceanfront walkway and no signage as to where you can find any stores. We walked for a bit and then returned to the mainland and Balboa village. Overall, we loved how clean and family friendly the beach and the pier and the island were. If we lived closer, we would visit more often for sure!

The scenic view at Inspiration Point is beautiful. The beach wasn't too crowded, and we got space to sit down on our camping chairs. The water was cold but eventually manageable. Unfortunately, there was a lot of floating seaweed that would get tangled on my legs. The waves were hit-or-miss. Once in a while a powerful one would take us back to the shore. However, the waves were mostly calm rolls that allowed us to stay steady on the boards. You could even relax and float on your back through buoyancy. After spending a good time in the water, I was really tired; it was basically a workout. The incline up back to Inspiration Point was also steep. Luckily, the car was parked nearby for free. While CdM was a little out of the way, the easy and free parking made up for the travel time. I recommend arriving early to find available space.
