I am writing this review on behalf of my wife. She does not post reviews so I feel compelled to do it on her behalf. Like so many others, she suffered a full retina detach in her left eye in May. She had seen our amazing optometrist who somehow didn't catch it and another opthamologist who missed it. On the third he referred her to Dr. Shah and West Coast Retina. I accompanied her on her first appointment. Using their super high res scan machines he could quickly see a complicated detachment that was a severe case. He told her he could operate on her the next day. She received her first surgery literally the next day that went well. Recovery was as expected. She had to go in for a second procedure (he said all of this during the first visit so it wasn't a surprise) to remove a cataract and tidy up the scleril buckle from the first procedure (removed oil and put in air). Here we are about 3 months after the first procedure and she is doing as well as anyone had hoped. She will likely suffer some permanent loss of vision / color acuity because her retina had been detached for some time so what's gone is gone, even though it's re attached. I'd like to tell the world that Dr. Shah is one of the best doctors I have ever met and we are so grateful to have found him and been under his care. We have gotten to know him pretty well through the many follow appointments and he is not just an amazing surgeon, he genuinely has passion for his practice and patients. My wife was understandably upset and he would literally hold her hand and sooth her during some appointments. Who does this? We learned on our last visit (by asking him, he never would have told us) that he does a lot of surgeries "pro bono." We found out how we can make a donation to help with some of the less fortunate. He does this because there is a massive need for surgeons like him to repair retinas. I don't know why so many people are having problems with their retinas but that facility is full of people all day every day. The staff is all top notch. Great 'bedside manners', smiling and positive and great at what they do. If you suspect any problem with a retina tear or detach, do not waste any time. Get in to see specialists like this RIGHT AWAY. Do not wait for optometrists who may not have the equipment to spot this. We are lucky we live in times where retina problems are usually treatable. My uncle went blind when I was a child from 2 retina detachments. Going through this process makes me wonder why he couldn't get his repaired but it was a different time and situation (he was type 1 diabetic). Good luck to you if you do need help with your retinas but I can promise you will be in as good of hands as you can be in with West Coast Retina if you end up there. read more

I got referred to West Coast Retina due to an issue I have mainly with one of my eyes. Since it's regarding the eyes, I was super nervous about seeing a specialist. Receptionist for check in was lovely. They had disposable shades for clients to grab and I thought that was pretty nice. The wait was just a few minutes until Maddie called me in to get my eyes numbed and dilated. Another staff took photos of my retina with a machine and I was brought up to their second floor. I met with Dr. Andrew Lin and Dr. Shah. Dr. Lin took his time to examining both my eyes carefully and I didn't feel rushed. Dr. Shah came in after, did his check of my eyes, and answered my concerns. He even gave me a sample of eye drops that he recommends for my symptoms. They were very nice and professional. The office isn't as modern but it is clean and had everything needed to check on retina health. Overall, my appointment was quick and efficient. I didn't experience bad wait times like other reviews have mentioned. My appointment was around 10am. The waiting room did have a lot of people as I was leaving. read more

These providers are bomb. Though I knew medicine is specialized, I had no idea there are retina specialists! I had occasion to visit one for a consult ahead of my cataract surgery. It's a multi story building with everything dedicated to the retina. I saw Dr. Georgia Kamboj and was impressed with her efficiency, she was thorough and professional, patient and took the time to answer our questions. Did an unhurried exam, and gave me reassuring news about the health of my retinas, plus gave me a heads up for what to watch for after surgery. The front office people are also on top of the process, waiting rooms everywhere, appointments on time. Before my appointment, they called for a check-in process to ask medical questions, so that everything can be expedited the day of. There's a parking garage nearby and street parking as well. First, let me say the care was very good. The issue is the back office. I looked up WCR with my insurance insurance carrier (backed by Aetna) and they showed as in-network. After waiting for 3 weeks for my appointment. Two hours before my appointment I am called and informed that my appointment was being cancelled as they were having issues getting paid by my insurance (Angle Medical). They said they would only see me if I would do self-pay. I decided I needed to see them and agreed to pay out of pocket the over $400 fee. I get there and told I have to sign an agreement as self-pay they would not submit to my insurance on my behalf - so I asked for itemized bill and they said it would be sent within 2 weeks. After 2 1/2 weeks I reached outandwas provided an email address to reach out to the billing department. Now 21+ days after my appointment, I am told that what I signed, also stated I would not suit to my insurance! WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? First I'm refused service as WCR is having an issue with my insurance - then I have to sign away my rights to submit to my insurance because I agree to pay them up front - AND they don't want to provided me an itemized bill for services. I'm considering reaching out to the state governing board or my assemblyman or state senator. UPDATE (13-Nov-2025) - I finally got the detailed I was asking for. I've updated from 1 to a E star review - as they really need to tighten up their front/back office - but again the clinical staff and Doctors are amazing!!!! read more

I have been taking a very elderly relative to this office as a patient for WMD treatments for several years. The doctors and technicians have been fine. My complaints are with the office staff and office management. There is a problem in notifying patients when WCR staff changes a prior appointment, or when there are conflicts regarding insurance, etc. First bad experience: The patient was assigned to a doctor who didn't take the patient's insurance (although all of the other doctors in the office did take the patient's insurance.) Upon our arrival, we were turned away, with an appointment made for a different date with another doctor. We are coming from a distance out of town. We are two senior women who feel uncomfortable in the dirty, congested downtown neighborhood where this office is located, with drug addicts present on the street. Second bad experience: We were turned away when we arrived for another, different appointment. We were told that the office had phoned to reschedule the month prior; although we never received this information in a phone call, voice mail, e-mail, or text. Once again, attention to and respect for the patient slips between the cracks. And once again, the patient returns home without her treatment, and once again, we have to return for another, make-up appointment at extreme inconvenience, expense, and a bit of hazard. I understand that this is the only place in SF that provides WMD injections (unless you are a Kaiser patient), so they kind of have patients by the short hairs. My advice is that if you have to use this facility, phone them the day beforehand, and make sure that they are expecting you, and if you are seeing a new doctor, make sure that they take your insurance. We shouldn't have to do this, but this is the patient playbook if you are going to use WCR. Minimize your wasted time, frustration, and elevated BP. read more

Anyone else always feel like they're the youngest by a mile at the retina specialist? Well, this one is for you! Hi. I'm a 35F with T1D for 18 years (dx'd at 18). My diabetes was mismanaged for the first...decade+ of my diabetic life. Turns out I'm rather brittle, but docs never took the time to work *with* me to figure it out. Naturally, this eventually led to damage in my retinas. Today, thanks to technology + my amazing team at UCSF + my hard work, my a1c is 5.3; thanks to modern medicine, I'm a legit walking miracle (for more reasons than t1 & retinas lol but I digress). Back to my eyes - I had a terrible kidney infection end of Jan 2020 (WBC 22k) which took my doc at the time's "5 out of 10 concern about retinas" to an 11. Blurry af vision, had to screen shot & zoom in on my phone to read, but even then-could barely read... all bad. I've had ~10 eylea treatments each eye, as well as laser therapy (once left, twice right) at a different practice where I grew a great relationship with my doc, but always had terrible exp with the admin staff. In an urgent situation in June where I thought I needed treatment in order to preserve my vision, my old doc's office laughed in my face, and forced me into finding a new doc. Enter WCR! I have a friend who sees Dr. Agarwal & recommended her without question. She was lovely. My scan of the right eye looked fine to her. I went home. Two months later, my optical nerve on my right eye hemorrhaged - not the first time it's happened so I knew the drill: call eye doc to get in for an eylea injection ... Dr. Agarwal wasn't available, but Dr. Jumper was. And just my luck, supposedly he is THE expert for type 1 diabetic proliferative retinopathy. It's funny how the Universe works, but I think this whole string of wild events (that all felt a bit preventable) was meant to lead me to him. Turns out I did need an eylea injection at the previous appointment & moving forward I'm going to trust my gut & how I know my eyes feel when they need medical support. We live & we learn. Dr. Jumper explained a few things to me (vitreous lining, what to expect moving forward) that my docs had not bothered to inform me about previously. It kinda blows my mind how few hard facts doctors tell patients to help them be better stewards of their own care. I understand the general population is below average & maybe they won't get allllll the info, but at least ask the patient if they want to know more *shrug*, OR at the very least, if you feel you have an intellectually curious person in the exam chair, share the knowledge with them. Had I know three years ago what I know now in terms of hard scientific facts about my kidneys & eyes...sheesh, would have been a different journey. In conclusion, patients: ask questions, be your own advocate - tell the doc you want to be more informed re: the mechanisms leading to the presentation of symptoms. Be prepared to wait. Sometimes people go into the office & end up needing a large in office procedure, this will push appts back. It sucks, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. If you notice it's taking a while to see your doc, ask the people at any desk what the estimated time of seeing doc is. WCR's admin staff is great - they let me cry about the highway robbery that is medical insurance/"healthcare" in 'muricah. They obviously can't say much while wearing their scrubs, but they smile & nod in solidarity. Like I said, I always feel like I'm the youngest in the office - love to bring them some spice for the day (:0 After a particularly long wait in June, they even had a phone charged for me to borrow so I could continue to entertain myself doom scrolling. read more

Updating my review - I went last week to see Dr. Jumper and the wait was going to be longer than an hour just to get started. I'd only put an hour and 20 minutes on the meter, thinking that was adequate, and didn't want to go out and come back, so I rescheduled to see Dr. Kamboj today. I just got home from my appointment, and what a difference. The waiting room was empty. I was seen immediately. And Dr. Kamboj is wonderful. I am not sure why Dr. Jumper is overbooked, but I will be seeing Dr. Kamboj from now on. read more

10/10 I appreciate you fitting me in. I was hit in the eye with a tennis ball while using a ball machine and was seeing flashing and dark spots. I was able to be fit in quickly. I truly appreciate it as I know you are a busy clinic. I was so anxious and scared about the loss of my vision or needing surgery. The doctors were so thorough with their examination and testing and explained what to look for over the next few weeks. It helped calm my nerves. So appreciative of your service. read more

West Coast Retina (WCR) is a gem. As an enrollee w/ Kaiser Oakland for 38 yrs. I've had excellent surgeons + excellent surgeons for family members. HOWEVER: Recent visits w/ Kaiser Oakland Eye Dept. surgeons has sent me searching for better options. Kaiser Oakland's cataract surgeon found a "bump" in my retina, so I was referred to their Kaiser Oakland's retina surgeon, who was dismissive and un-helpful. My search for a 2nd opinion led me to WCR which was recommended by a professional whose opinion I respect. At WCR on 30th St. in Oakland, I was examined by Dr. Georgia Kamboj. She was wonderful -- I highly recommend her to anyone w/ retina issues: 1) She explained the layers of the bump in my retina, the bubble, the layer of scar tissue -- something neither Kaiser surgeon --- cataract nor retina -- took the time to do ; 2) she explained the range of outcomes from cataract and subsequent retina surgery --- neither Kaiser surgeon did that; 3) she explained the actual focal distances of the lenses used in cataract surgery. Kaiser just emails you a video reviewing the distance options, but no recommendations, or explanations why. Then, you're left with the responsibility to select which focal length you want installed on your eyeball -- as if the patient has a degree in Optometry. 4) Dr Kamboj also answered my questions about focusing at the different distances post-cataract-op. Kaiser's cataract surgeon never explained the real focal distances -- they just tell you Far, Mid-Range, and Close. Dr Kamboj explained the actual focal distance for the range choices, and answered my questions about how they work (b/c I also have astigmatism) post-cataract surgery-- something Kaiser surgeons never did; 5) Dr Kamboj explained why she prefers doing cataract surgery one eye at a time.....At Kaiser they'll do both at the same time unless you request otherwise. Kaiser Oakland Eye Dept now seems like an inferior quality, high-speed processing facility. I really appreciate Dr Georgia Kamboj's answering my questions, explaining what was going on in my eye, the "whys and wherefores" of the choices, etc. Dr Kamboj was very thorough, very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. When I initially entered their bldg, I was apprehensive b/c the bldg is clean, but quite outdated. The waiting room was also outdated , w/ only "People" magazines avail -- giving me some doubts. However, I had heard excellent appraisals about WCR and after my excellent experience, my doubts were dispelled. Their quality was vastly superior to Kaiser Oakland's Eye Dept. I now check cataract and retina surgeons' credentials online before scheduling an app't. Dr. Georgia Kamboj's credentials exceeded those of the retina surgeon I saw at Kaiser Oakland. read more

Everything was as I hoped for and needed, two docs plus support staff all super. I required immediate care because of a possible detached retina, was seen almost immediately! I feel very confident that I am in excellent hands in dealing with the issues involved. read more

I really hope my husband's appointment doesn't go as poorly today and that he has clear instructions for anything he needs to do moving forward. Response does not address the problem: Higgenbothom's refusal to discuss issue. I never asked for free service; I always paid what was asked. A good manager doesn't refuse to meet with clients to resolve issues--to hide in the office and not return calls. This had nothing to with a request for free service. My doctor was good and everything moved along reasonably well. The only issue was that they have a mass-influx of patients being juggled around from room to room and test to test. It's very much a production line. I do wish I had more time with my doctor when I finally got to meet him. He was good, but it just seems that he was in a rush to see a bunch of other patients as well and so I was sort of on the production line and needed to move along. read more

Dr. Malini Pasricha is weird. We were referred to her offic for the second opinion, and randomly got her as a retinologist, to consult my husband on his wet AMD. When she enthusiastically (I am not kidding!) announced that the intravitreal injections have complications, I asked her about her % of complications (we were considering injections with her). She first refused to disclose the data, and when I gently pressed her, she tried to change the topic and then refused to treat my husband! We are going back to our prior office - they do not throw tantrums and answer questions. read more

Nasty office staff. A female employee who knew I was rushing there in tears with a possible detached retina was a rude witch to me and threatened me that I wouldn't be seen because I couldn't find parking. One of the worst days of my life. I curse the day she was born. read more

I've had 3 appointments at WCR so far, first one was with Dr. McDonald and the last 2 have been with Dr. Cunningham and Dr. Burckhard. Between my 2nd and 3rd appointments, I also spoke to Dr. Pasricha on the phone who called me to answer some questions I had emailed to Dr. Cunningham. Everyone I have engaged with has been kind, attentive, considerate, highly knowledgeable and professional. Special shout-out to the front desk crew for responding to my text msgs and the incredibly kind support staff that have been dilating my pupils and taking ocular photos. I am truly grateful that I was referred to WCR by my regular optometrist. The service and quality of care is beyond exceptional. read more

Approx 4 yrs ago, they took me in for an urgent detached retina condition. They quickly found several minute tears and prompted for either a bubble fix (available immediately) or a collar fix (24 hour surgery wait). Surgeon felt confident the bubble fix was appropriate... and 4 yrs later, that eye remains in perfect condition. My gratitude to the surgeon and staff continues eternally. read more

Over the years my wife and I have had several serious issues issues that we have been treated four by Dr. McDonald and Dr. Johnson. These have included a rare melanoma that required proton therapy, a macular hole and a detached retina. Both doctors have provided expert care, and performed surgeries with such expertise they saved us from losing our eyesight. We had total confidence in them for day one, and would go nowhere else . I was referred to West Coast retina's Dr. Jumper by a relative and I am so happy I took his advice and have Dr. Jumper evaluate my eye health. His step is impressively, efficient and professional, as well as courteous. My entire visit test include it only took an hour and a half. I stand by my faith in Dr. McDonald. He has treated my eyes and has continued to monitor my vision since 2005. The office is well run. The staff is always efficient and kind. The wait is much shorter than it was when the practice was located near Oracle Park. There is room for improvement. Although, it's not a reason to go elsewhere. I wasn't exactly thrilled to visit West Coast Retina, especially since I had to get my "retinal holes" checked out. Given the situation, it was a wonderful experience from my first phone call. The admin professionals were quick to call me back and schedule an appointment ASAP. I even got a packet of preparation instructions and paperwork in the mail. I wish more places did that. Impressive and so organized! I took Lyft from my apartment to WCR. It was easy to find. The waiting room was completely packed, and I sat there for 30 minutes after my appointment time until I could be seen. The gentleman who took my vitals was really sweet. We had a good laugh about the neat eye pressure tool. Next I was escorted to another floor, where I was seen by an assistant of the opthalmologist. My eyes were so tired from my poked, proded, and dilated. She took a look and confirmed that she saw retinal holes, which bummed me out. I thought it was unusual that the opthalmologist then came in and repeated the same exact observation process, eventually concluding that I didn't have retinal holes and it was just discoloration of my retinas. I'm grateful for her expertise, poise, and professionalism. I wish I wasn't bounced back and forth between doctors on this one issue, even outside of WCR. Better safe than sorry. Everyone was great, though. It was a challenge getting out of the building with my sore and dilated eyes, but I made it home eventually. Overall it was a positive experience. If you're looking for eye specialists, they weren't at the top of my search results online, but I'm glad my optometrist referred me to them. Plus they take Cigna! Hopefully I won't need to be back, but if I do, I know I'll be in good hands. read more

Posting here as a public service for anyone who, like me, has a serious eye condition that requires injections into the eye for correction. I am not needle-phobic, but I had a real fear of having the necessary eye injections. Dr. Jumper and his team were patient and professional, explaining what the medication would do, and reassuring me that the numbing agent would prevent any pain. I wasn't 100% convinced about that last part, but realized I had to go through with it or risk losing sight in one eye. Dr. Jumper was prepping the eye, or so I thought, and then suddenly it was over: no pain, and I didn't even see the needle coming! I felt silly for having been so fearful, but also very thankful for Dr. Jumper and the amazing team at WCR. I now have zero fear about having the remaining shots needed to complete the treatment. read more

Completely lack of respect to patients' time, and front office staff grossly failed to keep patients,who are waiting, informed re: delays. 2 office visits in a row, one in May and one this afternoon. Both times, the doctor was late by more than 1.5 hrs. When i inquired of front desk as to when will the doctor be available to see me, the front desk staff, then, said maybe another 30 mins because today they have only one doctor....., which made it worse because before i went up to the front desk to inquire when will the doctor be available to see me, i surveyed the other 7 patients in the waiting room about their appointment time. It turned out that if the 8 patients who were waiting in the waiting room, 3 patients, me included, had the same appointment time!! This office over/triple booked patients!! All the while, the front desk staff never felt compelled to inform the waiting patients. Very unprofessional and unacceptable!! read more

Edit: They seem to have fixed this for me. It was a journey, but I'll add an update the review if/when I confirm it's fixed. Had two quality appointments here 4 years ago. Then found out recently that because they charged me $37 less than they should've for my copay they sent me to a collections company that never contacted me and has now put it on my credit report. Still trying to figure out how I'm even supposed to pay them. Very much not a practice that operates in this century in terms of technology. And when I called to try to figure this out I was derided and then told I'd get a call back which never came. read more

West Coast retina Eye doctor on Bush Street is the worst I've I have ever encountered I would not recommend it. The service is bad. The customer service is bad the doctors are bad they do not explain to you what's going on with your eyes they do not return phone calls, and have you on hold for hours can't even make an appointment I do not recommend this place to handle such a serious condition as being able to see. read more

From the moment I stepped into the office, I was grateful for the obvious care that West Coast Retina has for their patients. I felt completely safe when observing the precautions they take. I was also impressed with the attention and care I received by the various people who guided me from one place to another. Everyone was friendly and professional and everyone was great about telling me what they were doing before they started. Finally, my examinations by Dr. Ng and Dr. Chen felt very thorough and thoughtful, and the information that they gave me was very clear -- the explanation about the structure of the eye and the effects of aging, and of the cause of my symptoms, and then the specific symptoms to watch out for, as well as affirmation that it was good for me to come in just in case. I also really appreciated that when Dr. Chen gave me her card, she mentioned that the office line is staffed after hours by a service, so I would know that I can call any time if needed. All in all, it was a very positive experience and I feel as though that didn't happen by coincidence.  My compliments to the folks who have created the processes and procedures. This office could be (and should be) a model for any service provider. read more

Stayed late on a Friday night to save my eyesight - these people are Gods in my book! Long story short....on day 4 of a brand new job in this new city...I started seeing a weird shade in my right vision...knew I was at risk for a retinal detachment, so I called my husband and asked him to find me a Retinal Specialist...he found me a place (which I'll write up separately) to rush me too...and they realized the my retina was hanging on by a thread and needed to be reattached ASAP before my central vision was affected. The doctor that was working with me said - I'm calling the best Retinal Surgeons in this city and immediately called this place - at 4 pm on Friday. Although I'm sure this was not what they wanted to hear with happy hours, friends, family, etc. awaiting, they told her to send me over immediately, she called me a cab and off I was to this place... When I got there, the office was/had closed...but they allowed me to take the insurance papers back with me, dilated my pupils, and had several guys examine me to determine the best course of action - one of the head surgeons and a surgical fellow who ended up being in on my surgery. Throughout all of this, they were very patient in letting me take calls from my husband - who was trying to figure out what was going on and locate the place to come pick me up! Because I had already eaten and it was hard to book a surgery room on such short notice, they scheduled my emergency "Schleral Buckle" surgery for early the next morning...and explained the whole thing to me before sending me home to rest up (basically they were placing a rubber band of sorts around my eye to shrink my eye, reduce pressure tugging on the retina and let it retach itself). While I did not get to meet the other head doctor who was officially in charge of my operation until my second follow-up, I was in highly caring, capable hands with the surgical fellow - who gave me and my husband his cell phone (in case we encountered any issues) and answered it/helped out when we ran into some confusion at the hospital while trying to be admitted... In the end, the surgery went extremely well, they were able to reattach my retina, my recovery has gone normally (although I was in some pain that is to be expected) and my follow-up routines have gone smoothly - everyone I have met in the practice - from the top doctors to the ones in training have been knowledgeable, professional and friendly - and the administrators have been a pleasure to work with as well - every time I go in there, they remember me! If you are ever so unlucky to have a retinal detachment or need emergency surgery for some other retinal problem - I would highly recommend placing your trust in this practice - they are top notch! read more

I'm waiting at this clinic right now, 2 hours after my appointment. When I arrived, 18 people were waiting in their small waiting room, like covid central. After 90 minutes, I talked with the receptionist, who said the problem was too many appointments. I asked to talk with the scheduling manager, but he's not in the office. I just now heard from another patient that she's been waiting 3 hours already. read more

WCR has, deservedly, the reputation of being the best place in Northern California for treatment of retinal conditions.
