As I was wandering around their yard I saw the most beautiful emerald cedars. We decided right there on the spot to have them deliver and plant 9 of them in our backyard . Tony and Paul were on time and had the job completed in 45 minutes. They even topped up the flower bed with fresh topsoil, and swept up the spillage in the driveway. It is not huge, but somehow I almost always find the perfect thing, whether it is a hostess gift, a small thoughtful present, or just something I decide I need for myself. Their gift selection feels really unique and not like the usual stuff you see everywhere else. They also have really nice greeting cards at super reasonable prices, usually about half of what you would pay at the pharmacy, and they feel so much more personal than those generic cards. It is one of those places that just feels special when you walk in, and I pretty much always leave with something I love.

Tom, at Vanwingerden, agreed to take my seeds and germinate them. He sent me pictures of the plants germinated in April and told me I could pick them up in "a month or so". Some didn't come up and I told him not to worry about those ones. The deal was I would buy the starts back. I called before mother's day to pick up the starts with no response. I called after mother's day only to discover Tom gave away ALL the plants to one of his employees. Not only did he give this employee the plants, he gave her ALL my seeds as well and then tells me he doesn't want to bug her to ask for anything back because of a loss in her family. Why would I bring seeds in and give them to their office if I didn't want the plants? Why would he get my hopes up by sending me a picture of the plants? What would ever make him think it was ok to give away my heirloom seeds? I blindly trusted and shouldn't have. The whole thing makes no sense at all and I feel totally robbed.

This is my favourite garden store. The staff are amazing. You can bring in a leaf off of a plant…read moreand they can advise you about what the issue is. For example: the brown tips on the Azalea is environmental, likely wind burn and not a bug that I need to spray. The staff is knowledgeable, polite and professional. I always feel good about buying my plants and summer flowers there because I know that they are well taken care of and are not 'stressed' like they are at the box stores. The best part is that most of the time you can see Brian Minter there. I love listening to him on CBC. He too is very helpful and is more than willing to advise on plants, solutions for pest control or how and when to fertilize. It is wonderful to have such an amazing resource in our community. I think we are truly blessed. The little cafe there is also a great addition. Before shopping you can enjoy a sandwich, or just grab a coffee. This year I am going to be growing in raised bed gardens and have gotten all of my Fragro herbs at Minters. I am also seeding poppies on my property, and was able to find California, Oriental and a hybrid. So that is wonderful. Great selection of women's clothing, gifts, cut flower department, cafe, tropical plants, seasonal plants, herbs, vegetables, landscaping perennials, annuals, tools, pots, trees and so much more. Last summer the tomatoes that grew on my deck where 10 feet tall. I had asked one of the staff which ones to buy, and I grew 7 different varieties. The produced wonderfully, and it was cool to grow heirloom plants. I will post some photos of the plants from last summer. Thanks again Brian, you have a great hub for the community. I was impressed by the variety of rooms/themes this place holds - perhaps my favorite was the bright (and warm!) cactus room which was refreshingly well-lit during these grey winter months. They also had a delightful glass mushroom display as well. I purchased a Christmas cactus and pot for a holiday gift, and the lady at the counter thoughtfully potted it for me and topped up the soil. I also tried the seasonal eggnog latte at the food truck parked outside, which was flavorful and really hit the spot. I would encourage anyone looking for any sort of garden item to visit this store - be prepared to spend some time here browsing!

We saw the annual end of season 30% off signs around town and we were wanting a couple of dwarf evergreens ... so that brought us in. Apparently the sale had ended, store still open but full price. We noticed since the store changed owners, prices have moved upwards. Honestly the selection is still great and the plants we bought today were healthy (outside of being very parched and we did get a bonus, free weed ) but the pricing here has gotten out of hand. But Kent's you are no longer the only show in town. There are many great nurseries in these parts. $52 for a dwarf evergreen x 2 = outrageous!!! The clerk was nice enough but just said "you should have seen the signs! They said sale ending.." and maybe they did? In fine print. I guess we are just one customer of so many, maybe the others don't mind paying exorbitant prices. I don't know what the future holds, but so long for now!
