As for the doctor, he was absolutely amazing. You could truly tell that he takes pride in his work and genuinely enjoys what he does. He was thorough, patient, and made my daughter feel comfortable throughout the visit. Despite the small hiccup the day before, our experience was very positive, and I would definitely recommend Southside Medical Center. In order to get to the "why" of my review, I feel I need to provide some context…read more On Sunday, December 22, 2019, my family (my husband, three children, and our dog) and I were traveling for Christmas from our home in Kentucky to Florida. While driving through Georgia my husband, who was driving, suddenly became ill and passed out at the wheel on I-75. When this happened we were in the middle of I-75. It was a traumatic event for everyone! While we were very blessed to, somehow, not get hit by any other cars, it was a very scary situation for me and my children. After we were able to get the car to the side of the road, I called 911 and had to wait 45 minutes alongside I-75. It took another 15+ minutes to get to Spalding Regional Hospital. I was absolutely frazzled. I was trying to calm and reassure my children, to plan for whatever the hospital might find going on with my husband, and to figure out how I was going to spend time at an emergency room with 3 kids and a dog. I decided to leave my 2 oldest boys (12 and 15) outside of the emergency room with our dog while my youngest and I went in with my husband. I quickly let the nurses in the ER know that my 2 children were out front with our dog. They said it was fine. Before my husband was even in a room a security guard came back to the nurse's station to say that there were children unsupervised with a dog. I overheard the nurses explain the situation to him. About 10 minutes later he was back and approached me and told me my children could not be unsupervised. My head was absolutely spinning; I was so overwhelmed. In many states it is illegal for a dog to be left in the car, but the security guard said that was what I needed to do. I went ahead and put the dog in the car, though I was very concerned about how my dog would react to this and was equally concerned a dog advocate would break my window to get the dog out. The nurses who overheard my interaction with the guard were almost as upset as I was by the way they were speaking to me. They told me to do what I needed to do for the dog and it would be fine. After 15 minutes or so later I sent my oldest (15) to check on the dog and make sure she wasn't barking or tearing anything in the car apart. Being that we were traveling for Christmas we had snacks and presents in the car. I was worried she might get into those, feeling that she was trapped. He was escorted back to me by a security guard, as if he had done something terribly wrong. I was told he could not travel alone anywhere in the hospital. By this time I had heard enough. I was frazzled, in a town and state far from home, in a traumatic situation, with 3 kids and a dog! I could not possibly do it all myself. I needed my son to be able to help me. I will admit, I was at the end of my rope and lost my temper. The guard walked away and returned with another guard (Vaughn) who proceeded to get right up in my face and tell me how no minors could be unattended in the hospital. I had to tell him to step back because he was right in my face. He was very rude and condescending to me. He lacked any and all empathy for the situation. Ultimately, after many exchanged words and my nerves being completely shot, he left. A nurse who had heard came by and offered to escort my son anywhere he needed to go in order to help me and check on the dog. THE MEDICAL STAFF WAS AMAZING! Overall, though, it was by far one of the worst experiences I have had. I was absolutely appalled by the treatment I received from Allied Security. In my profession I have had to undergo many hours of training on trauma-informed care. It seems that any security personnel (or any staff) should be required to go through such training. We were all suffering from the trauma of our experience. We needed support, understanding, and help. All we received from the security personnel was added stress and trauma. This is disgraceful. No family should have to go through this. I hope this review of our experience will help to inform future trainings and expectations of care from ALL those who work in the hospital.

I immediately called poison control, and they patched me through to the Battery Ingestion Center (yes, it's real.) After giving them my sons information, battery type, and the closest hospital. they instructed me to get there asap. I was literally 8 minutes away at this time. When I arrived, the doctors already had a plan in place for my child, x-ray technicians waiting, and the had alerted the helicopter that we might need them. This all within the 8 minute drive! Luckily, my son had a good prognosis, and none of that was needed, but I am impressed by their urgency.

I would like to break my review into sections. DOCTORS and theirs PAs: I have been treated by Dr. Choi, Dr. Orcutt, Dr. Schmidt, Dr Nourbakhsh and Dr. Wimbush. I received excellent care and attention from each one. I have to address Daniel Brown. by himself. He is a PA but he has been invaluable in my care throughout. Dr. Wimbush literally saved my life by recognizing I had blood clots and sending me out for evaluation. She also recognized the pain I was having in my neck needed immediate attention and sent me to Dr. Choi. She and Jessica (her PA) have left Piedmont and I consider that a great loss for this hospital. I can't begin to tell you all the things she did for me. It would make this post longer than it will be. Dr. Choi performed my Cervical surgery. He did a wonderful job. He wasn't the best when it comes to communication but that's why you have to do your research. He has left the hospital too. Dr. Nourbakhsh performed my spinal surgery and he did an excellent job. I have suffered from serious back pain for years and just recently could barely walk. I am 100% better now and any pain I have is nothing compared to where I was. I am very happy. Dr Orcutt performed my scope on my knee and will be performing my total knee replacement in about 24 hours. I have complete confidence in his abilities. That's where your research comes into play. I'm not looking forward to the surgery and pain but I'm confident I am in good hands. Unfortunately he is leaving next year. Dr. Schmidt was the first Dr. I encounter here. He evaluated me after I came here from another practice after they were ready to do hip surgery without doing their own evaluation. I ran. He let me know I have a few miles left on these worn hips. I was grateful. Daniel Brown has been the person giving me shots, discussing my options and keeping me out of pain as much as possible. He has a way of putting you at ease and working with you to keep you moving until you get up the nerve to have surgery. He is leaving with Dr Orcutt and will be a great loss to this hospital. Thanks to all of you for the care I have received in your hands. THE STAFF: The clinical staff is great!!! THE EMERGENCY ROOM: A total NO GO!!! I pray I never have to go there again. I went to the emergency room at Coliseum MC and was admitted that night and the surgery done a day later. There is no way anyone can say that being hospitalised and having surgery was an enjoyable experience. At least not in my opinion. But the doctors and staff at Coliseum medical centre made this at the very least a very comfortable stay and I felt very safe as far as the virus was concerned. I was on the 5th floor. The nurses, the phlebotomists and the entire staff on the 5th floor are nothing short outstanding. The hospitalists and the entire medical entourage were very professional, competent, and attentive with regular visits, inquiries and updates before and after surgery. The surgery was performed with robotic assist by Dr. John Thomas Williams. I am looking forward to my final visit with him so I can personally thank him for his excellence. I am 73 years old and I've had 3 other laparoscopic surgeries without the benefit of the robotic assist. This stuff is nothing short of amazing in regards to the amount of pain after surgery. From a medical viewpoint we are living in the "good old days". Being hospitalized and having surgery could never be called fun. But, the attention rendered by Coliseum Medical Center, to my comfort, concerns, and condition were all attended to with excellence.

My mother-in-law ended up in the ER here, which is over 2 hours away from us, from a very bad…read moresituation. She was diagnosed only 5 days prior with dementia and Alzheimer's. Without going in to too many details, she fell at another facility, hitting her front right forehead hard enough to produce a 1 inch bump and give her a black eye that is still there over 2 weeks later. I was with her all day in the ER. During that time, she was delusional, at times aggravated, and just "out of it". The people in the ER were WONDERFUL! First, the hospital put a "sitter" in the room. Olive was so kind and patient and showed me how to properly deal with my MIL who kept trying to get out of bed alone but wasn't allowed. They keep the "sitters" in the room with people who cannot be kept alone for safety reasons. These angels are there for 12 hour shifts (with relief provided when needed for breaks). Although I was there, I was so relieved to have a professional with me because I couldn't have managed my MIL by myself. Next, the doctors...OMG. They HEARD me and helped us get my MIL out of a bad situation and get the help she actually needed IN the hospital and not a "facility". They were so on top of what was actually going on with my MIL and put us on the right road to recovery and treating her disease. The nurses in the ER were so kind and good with MIL and me. They were professional yet kind - which is important when dealing with someone with dementia and sundowners. Outside of the ER, in the cafeteria, I also met people who were so helpful to someone so clueless as myself. We were in the hospital for over 2 weeks, and the first two days dealing with the unusual self checkout registers I always found someone reaching out to help me with a smile on their face. SO FRIENDLY! This was so important to someone going through such a rough time as I was - crying at the drop of a hat. Lastly, let me tell you about one kind soul in particular in the ER. I don't know his name, but he was so kind he deserves a call out. My mother-in-law woke up after a nap and was in the BEST mood! She was delusional and thought it was Thanksgiving at my house. She wanted some chocolate for us and our company (Nurse Olive), so off to the cafeteria I trekked for the 3rd time of the day. The ER is a MAZE and all of the nurses were busy. I asked someone to help me find my way to the "back door" leading into the hospital, but he led me to front of the ER, which wasn't helpful at all LOL. I turned around to go back and try and find my own way, and a janitor strolled up to me and said "You look lost. I've been watching you and want to help you." I told him what I was trying to do and that precious man led me through the maze of the ER, out into the main hospital hallway, and continued walking me until I knew where I was. He was ready to walk me ALL the way to cafeteria, but I told him I was good and knew where I was now. He smiled and told me it took him over a month of working in the ER to finally find HIS way around and that he was happy to help me because that was their job - to help the people who came to the hospital in need. I hugged him and thanked him profusely. While the reason we came to this hospital should have NEVER happened in the first place, the staff in the ER made my time there more bearable. I cannot thank the staff more for putting me at ease and treating us with such kindness and care. People coming to an ER are already in a heightened sense of emotion and having staff that can calm you and reassure you in this time of need is an assett.

11/12/2025: Consultation with Dr. Bruner for accidents that left my entire upper-back in constant…read morepain, bicep & wrist weakness, numb & tingly fingers. MRI showed 4 cervical herniated discs, but he recommended 1-level fusion (since he's performed ~4000 fusions & ~40 ADRs). Being young and otherwise healthy, I'm anti-fusion and advocated for artificial disc replacement. Unsure if Dr. Bruner is biased/had outdated information, but he assured me that fusion DOESN'T limit mobility & that FDA only approves of 1-level ADR [untrue]. To my distaste, Dr. Bruner downplayed the difficulty of performing each surgery & mentioned how surgery makes him money. I don't play about my pain and health issues, so he eventually agreed to do ADR on my C5-6 *emphasis on C5-6* 12/18/2025 Surgery Day: I arrived at Northside 9:30am and was in pre-op for HOURS hooked up to dilaudid IV, then Dr. Bruner walks into my room saying "Ready to replace C6-7? If I cannot access C6-7 to replace, can I do a fusion there instead?" I rejected the fusion and replied "I thought we were only replacing C5-6". He checks his notes then said "Oh, you're right. I usually don't apologize but I'm sorry." Ultimately, Dr. Bruner canceled my surgery b/c my "MRI was too old" (which he should've mentioned AT LAST MONTH'S CONSULTATION), ordered me to get new MRI, and wanted to reschedule surgery to next week. Once again, Dr. Bruner suggested that I be "open-minded to fusion" & mentioned gladly performing my surgery b/c it is easy and will put money into his pockets. I urged the importance of doing my surgery soon since the new year was approaching, meaning I would have different health insurance (Kaiser Permanente) and would have to restart the whole process again. He promised that if I get ADR surgery at Emory (under KP), he would refer me to trusted fellow neurosurgeons. I left the hospital at 4:30pm after SEVEN HOURS of NOTHING. My boyfriend was also there and witnessed this ordeal. 12/24/2025: Scheduler called me to reschedule surgery date and got annoyed that I was hesitant to follow through after my TERRIBLE experience with Dr. Bruner. Her tone was like I should be grateful that Dr. Bruner is willing to take time out of his Christmas vacation to operate on me AS IF IT WASN'T HIS FAULT IN THE FIRST PLACE. 1/2026: I chose the Emory route but Dr. Bruner refused to refer me to an Emory surgeon, lol who would've thought! TLDR: RUN !!! I've been in-and-out of doctors' offices for the past 4 years, and this is BY FAR the WORST healthcare experience I've EVER had. Dr. Bruner lives up to the negative neurosurgeon stereotypes (derogatory), Advanced Neurosurgery Associate front-desk lady is rude, surgery scheduler is rude. If helping people makes you miserable, then get another job! Only Toni the PA and the medsurg tech were pleasant.

Every staff member I saw was kind, patient and thorough. The receptionist, nurses, X-ray tech and PA were so professional and compassionate. Pain relief was fast and effective ( and much appreciated) The residents of this area are very fortunate.
