The delightful cakes at Wellington Lounge's Scents of Summer Afternoon Tea.
Jaime T.

Recently tried Wellington Lounge's gorgeous "Scents of Summer" Afternoon Tea (running until September) - a delicious, glorious, and quirky take on the traditional tea, with a shot of wheatgrass jelly to begin (yes, you read that correctly!). Sandwiches were served as "scrolls" (bread neatly rolled over the filling) and the pickled-cucumber sandwiches were a true delight. The scones were anything but "normal": served with traditional wild strawberry jam and clotted cream, we also had the option of trying the lemon curd with pink peppercorns (strangely addictive!) and Earl Grey butter, which tasted much like ... normal butter. But the piece de resistance came in the form of the cakes, which resembled a beautiful spring garden: the peach melba was encased in a ball of meringue that looked impressively like a peach, and accompanied by edible rocks (!) and lots of other beautiful treats. I especially loved the delicately flavored jasmine tea-cake, which worked really well with the peony and rosebud tea we selected. The tea pairing for each "course" was an ingenious idea, and service was excellent. Rolled out of there four hours later feeling pretty content.

For me, afternoon tea isn't just about eating and drinking. It's an entire sensory experience, in which I get to relax and socialize with my friends while enjoying seasonal delicacies and the finest choices in British tea. Thanks to the magnificent collaboration of Executive Chef Ashley Wells and Edward Bodenham of Floris London, the Scents of Summer Afternoon Tea at the InterContinental Park Lane was exactly what afternoon tea should be. Since I love to smell everything before I taste it, I have to admit the combination of distinct flavors infused with natural, herbal scents excited me. I was surprised at how much care was put into how the courses of the Scents of Summer Afternoon Tea were served. We were served a selection of small sandwiches, starting with smoked salmon and bergamot cream cheese in a lemon bread, which was hearty but subtle in flavor, and ending with a strong honey-roasted pumpkin on spinach bread, crumbled with rich and creamy feta cheese. This one was my favorite. After the savory dishes, the sweet scents of summer wafted through, in the form of deliciously decadent desserts. I loved the light flavor of the Jasmine tea cake, and thought it paired nicely with a warm cup of tea. One of my friends was partial to the grapefruit tart and violet cream, as she said the citrus flavor balanced the floral exceptionally. The tea service was delightful, and this is more than just tea and cookies. This truly is a journey, both culinary and fragrant. Between each course, we were served a form of palate cleanser, which made enjoying the next flavor even more intense. The atmosphere of the Wellington Lounge makes the whole experience regal and relaxing. The British summertime speaks volumes to your senses I can only imagine how amazing their Chocolate Afternoon Tea must be!

Only 2 sets of towels for a 3 person room but the room attendant was knocking at 8:30 (they come early to clean) so we got more towels & paper. The room was very nice with comfortable beds, mini fridge, a safe, and lots of receptacles. Pillows were flat so needed doubling. Hot water never ran out! They had a wonderful breakfast with almost everything you could want for a traditional English breakfast. My faves: awesome waffles, pastries, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, & surprisingly the porridge! The offered eggs to order, and tons of drink options, including smoothies. I have to give special props to one of the servers who checks you in and takes your dishes, his name was Yin, he was exceptional. Overall excellent stay!!

Upon check in, Soliman was welcoming and friendly which was a relief since we were tired from our long flight. We arrived early but were still able to check us in at no additional cost which was much appreciated. Our room had a large red stain on the carpet the size of a grapefruit. I called downstairs to ensure they were aware of this pre-existing damage and wouldn't charge us for it but they misunderstood me and sent housekeeping to clean it. The lady did her best to get it out but at the same time I'm kind of unsure of why an attempt wasn't made to clean it as part of the room turnover. Sometimes housekeeping wouldn't give us additional towels to replace the ones taken. Other times the coffee wasn't replenished. Soliman did a good job at explaining to us how breakfast worked. If you bought it in advance like the day before then there was a discount of a few euros vs buying the morning of. Breakfast was a buffet 18 euros (pre-paid) - decent with eggs, baked beans, bacon and potatoes. They had a variety of pastries and croissants. They had a pancake maker but seemed to brake and was no longer working. They have a restaurant/bar inside the hotel as well separate from the breakfast area. We went there a few times for dinner and drinks. The guys working the restaurant were usually just 2 guys and they were spread thin so service was slowww but they were friendly. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day they had a Christmas dinner menu which was 2 or 3 courses - same menu both days. The wings were very good. The main Christmas meal was a bit dry on the turkey but filling. Our last evening there, we decided to have a last drink. This is where things went south. We went to bar to try to order some drinks and a couple appetizers, and I say 'try' because we didn't succeed. We sat AT THE BAR, and the bartender Ariyana blatantly ignored us and even walked by us with zero acknowledgement. Just a stare and then looked away. So she DID see us. She looked pissed off too. Not the face you want to see on a bartender. We had never seen her there before during our entire stay. We sat at the bar for a bit longer and figured well if we go to our table, then they'll come to us and take our order. Waited some more at our table, and no one was acknowledging us. Finally we went back up to the bar and got someone's attention. We asked the guy (also new to us) if they were still taking food orders and he turned to Ariyana to ask "is the kitchen still opened?" and she rudely replied with an attitude, "the kitchen is now closed". It was a few minutes before 10pm and they closed the kitchen at 10. i said "well if you hadn't ignored us, we could've gotten our our order in". We didn't miss the opportunity to let Ariyana know that we didn't appreciate her attitude and how she ignored us. She pretended like she didn't know what we were talking about. It's a small-ish bar so how are you going to miss people sitting at your bar. She continued to argue with us and still wasn't apologizing or acknowledging her attitude. It wasn't only me that noticed. My mother and sister noticed this as well when we were first up at the bar. Someone else made our drinks but we had no food. We had snacks in our room so we went to get that and brought it down to the bar. My sister booked our stay here for 4 adults/2 rooms and wrote the manager, Mr. Taleb to let him know about our poor experience with Ariyana. It took some time to hear from him (more than a week), but he did reply. His response could've been better in my opinion and could've offered us something to make this experience better. A compensation of some sort, comped drinks for that evening would've left us with a better impression of this place but seems the manager doesn't really care about true customer service like in the U.S. I probably wouldn't stay here again if given the option.

We were greeted and assisted by an employee who observed us bringing multiple baggages up the entryway stairs. He wished us a Happy Anniversary, informed us that we were being upgraded to a suite on the fifth floor (room 503 yay yay!), shared the many amenities of the hotel, and handed us our keycards. Prior to our arrival in Kensington, we had been staying in smaller boutique hotels during our visits in Amsterdam and Paris. Therefore, the abundance of space in our suite almost made us feel like we were at home. Entering the room, we were greeted by a couch (with a TV mounted nearby) positioned in front of a sliding glass door that lead to a patio with two chairs and a table (not to mention a decent of the city). The kitchen area was complete with a microwave, utensils, plates, bowls, tea cups, coffee mugs, drinking glasses, and champagne flutes. On the counter was an expresso machine, expresso pods, a nifty device for boiling water, and a tasty assortment of chocolates with a message saying "Happy Anniversary!" Below the counter was not one, but two refrigerators (perfect for folks like us who like to purchase small grocery items - including champagne). The bedroom was a decent size with a mounted television (with the ability to access streaming services via Chromecast), snazzy Bluetooth speaker (I made good use of it!), a desk, and bed. I believe in saving the best for last...in my opinion...that would be the bathroom. The bathroom was complete with heated floors (unfortunately we did not get a chance to use them), a HUGE two person (depending on the size of said persons) sitting tub, and an open shower area with a shower head slightly extended from the ceiling (not ideal for folks that do not want to get their hair wet). Also, I forgot to mention that both the shower and hot tub have extensions. Since we were only at the hotel for three days and two nights, we did not have the time to utilize their many amenities. However, we were able to visit Apero, the bar located in the basement. We both ordered drinks from the cocktails menu, which we would later regret. Although flavorful, both drinks were loaded with so much ice that there was obviously little room for the drink itself. For both breakfast and dinner we enjoyed the convenience of room service. For breakfast we ordered the eggs, bacon, and wheat bread...which met our satisfaction's. For dinner we ordered the Chicken Ceasar salad with a side of fries with truffle mayonnaise...delicious! Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Ampersand Hotel. If you're looking for a hotel in which you can truly relax and enjoy the comfort and serenity of your room, I highly recommend staying here!

We were looking for something fun and different from a traditional afternoon tea, and this definitely leaned more interactive than expected. Arrival and First Impressions Reservations are important, and when we arrived the space was already filled with families. The setting feels polished but still very welcoming for kids, which is not always the case with afternoon tea in London. Service was excellent from the start, organized without feeling too formal, and the overall atmosphere had a fun, lively energy. The Highlights The experience is built around science themed trays filled with a mix of sweet and savory items. The kids immediately locked into the interactive elements, especially the build your own strawberry lemonade with different colored syrups, which turned into more of a mini experiment than just a drink. They also had cake pops, scones, and small PB and J sandwiches, all very approachable and fun. One of the better touches was a small take home item, a dinosaur themed tin, which the kids treated like a prize from the experience. It added to the overall feeling that this was designed with kids in mind. The adult trays had a similar variety with finger sandwiches, pastries, custards, and scones. Everything was solid and there was plenty to try. Being able to request more of anything you liked helped balance things out a bit and made it feel less restrictive for the price. The Challenges The biggest drawback is the cost. For a family of four it came out to around 350 USD, which is a significant spend for what is essentially afternoon tea. It leans more toward a themed experience than a traditional tea service, so if you are expecting something quiet and refined, this may not be the right fit. Final Thoughts This is one of those experiences that works really well if you go in with the right expectations. It is interactive, a little chaotic in a good way, and clearly designed for families more than traditional tea purists. We would not rush back and I removed a star due to the price, but we are glad we did it once because the kids genuinely loved it and still talk about it. If you are looking for something unique and are comfortable with the cost, it is worth it for the experience, though the value depends on how much you lean into the interactive side.

The scrambled eggs are soft and fluffy and the avocado with a poached egg on toast is delightful. This is our fourth visit for breakfast to this restaurant in the week. While previous visits the service was lovely and prompt, today's service was subpar. The seating was quick, but that's the only thing that was quick this morning. The waiter failed to bring out all items ordered and when the pastry baskets came out all of the pastries were cold and not warmed as before. The poached eggs were hard boiled and needed to be replaced and water was never brought to the table after three requests. I would give this restaurant a 2 overall rating if I had not previously rated it a 4 all along.

And now for all the reasons I love this place and shall be returning. The rooms are spacious and beautiful with lots of natural light, I stayed on the street side and it is quiet enough to do that and I loved the view of the beautiful fascade across the way, but you could also get a room facing the garden and the garden is such a treasure. I've already writen a review of the Buttery located right in the hotel as one of my favorite spots so staying here means you always have a lovely garden and cafe for breakfast, drinks, and lunch. The bathroom was beautiful and again more spacious than most as far as the shower. The AC is brand new and with London getting hotter and hotter in the summers and that heading into the fall most places are really not prepared so I was so grateful that it worked so beautifully. I loved all the small touches in the rooms and the cleaning staff was superb, everything was like brand new each day. Even the small lobby was a place to take a quick beat before or after ones day and I enjoyed all the reading materials they supplied. All of this for one of the best prices around in Belgravia, one of the most beautiful parts of town. But what distinguishes this beatiful boutique the most is the excellent service at every turn. Every person who works there is so professional, welcoming, engaging, and just very lovely. That includes cleaning staff and folks they contract to fix things that might be amiss in your room. This is just so key for me when being away from home. Thank you Thomas, Sanjay, Abi, Tas, and Oxanna for making my stay so special, grateful.
