A pleasing departure from the increasingly homogenous, seemingly kit-built takeaways popping up everywhere, the shop has a real community bases business vibe about it, which is very nice, and increasingly difficult, to find. I'm not much of a fish fan, truth be told, but this is the one place where I choose fish every time, as it really does seem to be something special here. It's not the cheapest chippy in Birmingham by a long stretch (£4 for kebab meat and chips, my second choice, is more than you'd pay elsewhere), but the quality of food makes the greater expense worth it. That there's seemingly always people inside, no matter what time of day, is a testament to the quality of the food.

As you'd expect, Southside is extremely popular with the locals, and it's not at all difficult to see why. The food is delicious, some of the best fish and chips I've ever had (coming from someone who doesn't even really like fish!), and the prices are excellent (a cone of chips sets you back an entire £1, small cod is £3, with generous portions). The residents of Northfield could be in dire straits with so few fish and chip shops around, but thankfully Southside is good enough to satisfy them all.

If you're looking for something off the beaten Birmingham track of curry houses and fish 'n' chip shops (such as Longbridge Fish & Chips directly across the road), then I'd heartily recommend the newly opened Lebanese affair. Firstly, I must express my disappointment that, despite various neighbouring local businesses, such as Mr Car Parts, embracing their small, independent business heritage, Fish 'n' Chips Junction sticks out like a sore thumb, as it looks nothing like what you'd consider to be a traditional shop of the type. The hoardings, styling, and menu boards above the counter are all much closer to your standard generic takeaway than a chip shop that's been serving locals for years. That being said, the prices are very good (£3.80 for cod and medium chips), and all the usual suspects in terms of alternatives (fried chicken, burgers etc.) are available. Most importantly, the quality of the food makes up for the shortcomings of the shop itself.
