Internet research shows that it's very hard to come by, so I'm thankful I discovered it here. My friends are in for a treat. I found three locations that sell Monkey Gin. Here and another place sell it for €36, much better than a €40+ price I saw elsewhere. The proprietress was very helpful. She asked me if I'd like it wrapped and I'd said "yes, for protection". I explained I was flying tomorrow to the US, so she wrapped it in tissue and then a double layer of a light cardboard casing and folded the extra material over and tied it taut with ribbon. Sufficiently secured. It's a great little shop with great customer service. I would visit again.

On Saturdays, it's only open from 10am-12pm, which seems to be the norm in the area. You'll need to ring the doorbell on the side to gain entry. The tasting room is small, but very nice and I figured we'd taste a few bottles, then be out the door pretty quickly. As it turns out, we spent so much time here that we did not make it to our next tasting place (open from 10am-12pm as well...) The host was friendly and what started out as a tasting of 2 wines ended with 7 or 8 tastes (very generous pours as well!) with our host hiding the labels and asking us to guess. We were pretty good at doing so and being the only tasters, we had an opportunity to ask her a lot of questions. Everything we tasted are quite good (not one bad pour) and well-priced. The pinot noirs (called "spaetburgunder" in this region) are shockingly light in color, but have a stronger, fuller taste than the pinots I'm familiar with in California. We walked out with 3 bottles of the 2009 Vitus (our favorite) and 1 bottle of the 2008 Novis (cabernet/merlot blend). Fun place and well worth a visit.

When we visited the village of St Hippolyte and had lunch at the restaurant there they served us a…read morelovely Rose wine and I immensely enjoyed it. Upon inquiring where we could buy this lovely wine in our broken French the hostess at the restaurant pointed us across the street and as it turns out the restaurant and winery are owned by the same family. The winery has existed since 1562 according to the sign out the front so I assume that is correct. They make a couple of whites, a rose and a red Pinot noir. I tasted all of the wines they made and most were pretty decent and what was extremely surprising was the prices. At €5 for a Rose and €6 for the Pinot Noir I thought it was a bargain and ended up buying some wine there to bring back. So for €60 we walked away with 12 bottles of wine and it was better than wines I have paid a lot more for in the past. We finally opened the Rose this evening and it reminded me of not only how good this wine was but also that I had not written about this place yet :-)) The really interesting part of this whole experience was the fact that whilst our French was a bit weak we were able to converse with him in German and the whole wine tasting was done in German in a French winery...lol I would happily buy wine from here again and I hope to come back for more Rose in the future. If they have indeed been producing wine for 400 some odd years they must be doing something right :-))
