Sunny Hills is an amazing preschool. I feel so lucky to have both my children enrolled and been…read moreable to watch them both grow and thrive with the help of the Sunny Hills teachers. As an elementary educator I was very invested in my search for a great preschool. Prior to sunny hills we tried a play school where more of the focus was social. Although this was helpful, I found that some organized learning, group projects, and early learning skills were missing. Then along came sunny hills. Although nestled below a church, they teach kindness, not religious material. I have two kids who both have started at sunny hills. Both were shy to start and nervous about school. The teachers aided in them feeling safe and welcome and now both kids love going to school every morning. I will be honest. I am a total hover mom and Sunny Hills has impressed me every step along the way. They even helped me let go a little knowing my kids were always in good hands. Dropping your kids off somewhere you know they are cared for and safe is the best feeling. The cost of the preschool is so reasonable, especially for what you get. The school also does things like field trips, winter concerts, art shows and other activities to include the parents in. I cannot say enough nice things about the education and care that all three classes at sunny hills have given to my children and our family.

Our daughter…read moreentered as a three year old in the Alder classroom and teacher Julie was such a great fit for our child. Activities are fun and build lots of new skills while being developmentally appropriate. The teacher:child ratio allows for individual attention. The school has a wonderful atmosphere and there is a lot of outdoor time no matter the weather. Teacher Millie runs the school and is the lead teacher for the preK class for the kids who will be entering kindergarten the following year. We love teacher Millie! She is kind, caring, dynamic, and so invested in each and every child. We had the unique experience of being able to interact with Millie and her preK class over Zoom sessions post Covid 19 closure of schools. Millie did three Zoom meetings a week and handled the experience with enthusiasm and AMAZING patience. It was a great way to stay connected with the school; to watch Millie keep the kids engaged over Zoom for at least 45 minutes each session was impressive! She often would stay on Zoom much longer with the kids who still wanted to interact with each other or have another story etc. Millie used the Oregon Zoo's animal spotlight videos as the focus of the lessons and the art project every meeting. All of the preK children seem so well prepared for their transition to kindergarten. Our daughter was in the younger class for the 19/20 schools year and will be going into Millie's class this fall and I'm so excited to watch our child grow with the class. Another bonus is that Sunny Hills has a summer camp program for 3-8 years old, so kids about to enter the school in the fall as well as kids who just graduated, plus their siblings, get to have more time at Sunny Hills! This is what we did with our daughter last summer leading up to her first regular school year in Julie's class. The school is located in their own area on the rear side of a church. The school also borders a smaller THPRD playground, field, and open area which are perfect for outdoor time. The location is a big plus! This school is a hidden gem and I feel so fortunate to have found Millie and Sunny Hills.

We were very excited to have a finally found a place.... She sent me all the paperwork and I printed it and filled everything out and sent it back. She made it clear I needed to send it back within 1-2 weeks to save his spot as I did! I was quoted 960 for three days for my soon to be 3 year old. A week goes by and never got anything from them so I had sent her over a email and then never got a reply after that as well. Then I eventually called and talked to Diane and she told me she had been very busy and apologized and said she got all of my paperwork and would get back to me very soon. SHE NEVER GOT BACK TO ME. Weeks later my husband calls and she tells us that she's been busy and now the price has not only gone up FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS, but the hours are also shortened. Clearly she was avoiding us! Not going through with the paperwork so they can charge more... would not recommend this place! Very shady! They even sent me a parent door code in the welcome email! Smh.

As a concerned parent, I feel obligated to share our unfortunate experience with Mari's Little…read moreLambs. My child attended the Jenkins location for 8 months, and the issues I observed were very concerning for any child. Because of these continuous issues we decided to leave this facility. Firstly, safety standards at this daycare are shockingly lax. There were numerous instances where I witnessed safety hazards that were simply unacceptable. On a daily basis there were unsecured gates we would walk into during drop off and pick up. The main gate to the outside door was constantly left open, and the door latch was left down. The very flimsy gates were easily able to be opened, pushed over, or just downright left open for children to wander. One day I walked in to see a child in an area, past the views of the teachers where they had access to the outside doors. The toddler room is also concerning because there is ZERO safety lock or latch on the door leading to the parking lot which is right next to a high-traffic street (Murray). Also, multiple times I would walk in to see staff on their personal phones, not looking at the kids. I called the Department of Early Education and this was actually a confirmed complaint from another parent that reported this as well. (Along with other verifications of staff not meeting first aid/CPR training). Equally concerning is the quality of staff. Their lack of enthusiasm, disengagement, and apparent disinterest in the children's well-being were evident. I found the staff to be unresponsive and lacking the necessary skills to handle the responsibilities associated with caring for children. One of the worst things we witnessed was the rudeness of some of the "teachers" to the children. I can't even count how many times myself or my husband would walk in to someone yelling or talking down to the kids. One staff member in particular, sneezed and said she was allergic to children, she would yell "attitude check", make a child feel uncomfortable being watched in the bathroom, or something else negative towards the toddlers. She would also say it loudly and sometimes pretending it was a joke, but kids don't understand that. It bred a very negative environment. There's also a noticeable absence of structured learning activities or any semblance of educational guidance. It's disheartening to see a place meant for early childhood development failing to provide a stimulating environment for learning. What they have tried to implement just seems like a sales tactic to "justify" their rising costs, and doesn't seem to land because the staff is just not trained or passionate. As a parent, you hope that the people you choose to look after your babies are good, capable people, and that just isn't the case here. I strongly advise parents to reconsider choosing Mari's Little Lambs for their child's care and development. The safety issues, absence of educational structure, and subpar staff make it an unsuitable place for any child to thrive.

Update: I had a call back from the manager days after this…read morereview, they must have gone through their list of touring parents to match my name with the review - creepy! Please be aware that this review is based on the tour that I did with my child and that I have no experience of day to day operations of this place. First impression stepping in is that it is dirty, there are dirty boots in the entry and the the entire place could have done with a good scrubbing. After being told they have approx. 80 kids attending at this school it kind of made sense that floors will get dirty quickly. If first impression was bad the worst was yet to come. The layout is poorly planned and I don't think the building was designed to hold so many children. There is clothing and other stuff everywhere which gives a very messy and cluttered impression. The classrooms are small for the amount of children and I don't what to think of how noisy and stressful it must be, for the smaller children during early morning/afternoon as they host kids from 8 different elementary schools. When I visited what would be my daughters class room they where just about rolling out the TV. Apparently they have DAILY "film time" session as a part of their curriculum. I also got to see when they served lunch, which a very saddening experience in itself. Not only was the portions tiny for an active growing children but the food itself was a gray unidentifiable "soup" served with some very dry pieces of carrot and 1/2 sausage bun. None of the kids seemed enthusiastic about it (who can blame them). No wonder we have failing school results and soaring obesity rates in this country when this is how we educate and feed our children. My heart goes out to the little ones and I feel for the families that might not have other options than to leave their kids in these type of facilities. The teachers (including the one giving the tour) was all very friendly and I do not doubt their good intentions but they seemed very tired and stressed out. To me the state of the place and the TV/lunch situation is a clear indication that the teachers don't have enough time/energy/resources to keep up with the high number of children.

The school follows just the right curriculum what we need for all ages. At these covid times, they follow the best practices, hygiene and precautions that we expected. I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon WYLC, specifically Teacher Nupur who showed a very deep and purposeful interest in the work she is doing. In all of my years of working in child care facilities, I had not seen nor experienced anything nearly as intentional, child-centered, or loving as the environment that Teacher Nupur creates for these children. My daughter has attended since the beginning of the year 2024 and I have only wonderful things to say about the program. Teacher Nupur cares deeply for each child and provides so much love and support in her facility to help them thrive as individuals and become confident in themselves. This also shows in the amazing teachers that she trains personally so that each child is met with a loving, respectful and supportive teacher. She even cooks healthy food for the children that my daughter grew to love. (food that she wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole at home!) So much of what I love about the program, can be seen just by walking through the facility. Each wall and corner carefully and thoughtfully put together to create a kid friendly, positive and calm space. We love Teacher Nupur and are heart-broken to have to leave due to moving for work. Finding a new childcare facility that compares will be a near impossible feat.

After our initial walk through and meeting with Nupur Singh who is the centers Director and teacher, we knew this was the place for us! Our little guy ended up attending for a little less then 3 years until graduating to Kindergarten this year. Before he started, our son was exceptionally shy when interacting with those outside of our family. Preschool was proving to be no exception but the teachers worked with him with patience, and gave him all the time he needed to come out of his shell. Our experience while he was in their care was a positive one and helped build an good academic foundation for elementary school. Him leaving this year was bittersweet for our family but we feel fortunate for the experience that we had and to have found teachers who truly care for their students.

We looked past a few red flags because our son seemed satisfied with his experience. Then, just six weeks before his third birthday, we were informed that he did not have a spot in the three-year-old classroom and that his spot in the two-year-old classroom had been given to a child on the waitlist. Yes, you read that correctly: Our son was forced out of this preschool without justification, and we were given six weeks to find new childcare accommodations at a time when most providers have six-month waitlists! After asking around, it became clear that this situation is by no means common for childcare providers. I won't get into the other red flags we identified because frankly, they pale in comparison to this infraction. I have had some time to process everything, and it has left me split between two conclusions: either Sunshine Montessori is managed so poorly that they failed to continue to care for our son or, for reasons I can't comprehend, the leadership at Sunshine Montessori made a malicious decision not to continue to care for our son. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusion. My only advice is to proceed with caution if you're considering leaving your child in the care of Sunshine Montessori Preschool. You too may be left scrambling to find a new provider on short notice.
