I was heading here to see the amazing Jeff Jeffrey playing - always a good night out anywhere he plays, keep an eye out for him - but was also keen to see what the place was like inside. And it's perfectly acceptable pub fare - done up in traditional Scottish style, with plenty of shelves and drink resting surfaces, a lot of framed old pictures and what not - and you feel at home. It is small, and we were a group of about 10-15 or so, so we kinda took over a lot of the space, so that could be an issue. The local punters were nice and friendly, and the bar staff were great, tolerating our huge and often random round orders! It's nice to have staff that you can have a laugh and joke with too, always a plus. To sum up, if you're in the area, then I heartily recommend popping in. Going by the signs, they offer food during the day, your typical pub menu. Worth a go!

Wasn't worth taking home though. Although a bit quiet, the atmosphere was good. We sat for ages talking and were never bothered by "solicitous" enquiries about whether we wished anything else. Price is good and well worth it. We will be back

The soup was pretty good, it was a bit creamier tasting than I prefer, I like it smokier, but it had plenty of fish and potato in it. A very decent start. My beef lasagne and chips, well the chips were nicely cooked, and the lasagne was good and solid as I like. It had a cheddar style topping rather than parmesan, so it was quite rich and not exactly authentic, but I have to confirm that we all left feeling that the whole experience was a very good one.

There's a rotating array of guest ales, that all the staff seem to be clued up on and have a real knowledge of if you ask them about one of them. The regular taps are all fine choices too, so you can't really go wrong if you're an ale drinker. The food is top notch too, and reasonably priced to boot. This is probably my favourite place in Lanark to waste some time, and well worth a look if you're in the locality. Check in advance to see if they're having one of their regular ale or cider festivals, and then it's definitely worth it!

I had my birthday dinner here recently where there were 26 people and we all got our food at the same time and it tasted great. The menu is big with lots of dishes to suit most. There's vegetarian options and being lactose intolerant, there were lots of meals on the menu that I could choose from. The staff are lovely and were very good dealing with everyone's requests at my dinner party. Sometimes they have bands come in at play at the weekend which certainly brings in a crowd.

Obviously we expected either tiny ones or a couple of medium ones, but no, there were four pretty large langoustines for that price and there were no complaints about the flavours either! Almost astonishing value. I went metro-retro for the main and opted for the lasagne. It was a nice lasagne, cheesy, firm and with plenty of mince, not quite as mother would make it but everyone likes theirs differently, and she was a very fine, qualified cook. It had more cheddar than parmesan, but I love rich food so it was no problem to me and I may well have it next time.

I have never once felt out of place at the Cross Keys Inn though, or the Backroad as it is known locally. It is more expensive than the other pubs in the village, but its well worth it for the pleasant atmosphere and great banter.
