I can't decide how I feel about this office. I've been twice and they managed to screw stuff up both times.
First time I went for my annual pap smear. I will try to review the screw-up without getting into squicky detail! Anyway, I worked at a GYN office for a year, so I know a thing or two. I saw one of the nurse practitioners, Carey. After she did the pap, she dropped the brushes into the vial, did the bimanual pelvic exam, and the whole time I kept staring at that vial, thinking, "Is she gonna swish it??"
Okay, let me explain. This will be useful to know for the ladies. When you get your pap smear, they use a brush and a spatula type thing...anyway, ya gotta swish it. Scrape and stir and swish. This gets the cells OFF the brush and spatula, and into the vial for testing.
She didn't swish it. Dropped them in and pulled them back out. I thought, "Damn it! That will come back unsatisfactory!"
Well....?? I get a call a week or so later, from one of the front desk girls. "Your results came back unsatisfactory cell count" - NOOOO, really? - "But the test is normal."
Shut the front door! I said, "If there is an unsatisfactory cell count for testing, how can the results be normal?"
"They are still able to tell. It's normal."
Strike one. I had to go to another doc and spend another copay to get it done right. (BTW I got a copy of the pap results in the mail and it just said, "Unsatisfactory cell count." No "normal" anywhere. Because if you don't have a sufficient sample they can't test it. Telling me my results were normal when they weren't tested? The fuck? Can you imagine if I had rolled with that but if I had gotten the test done right, they found cancer? Kinda bordering on malpractice, y/y?)
Then I got a bill in the mail. This visit was supposed to be covered 100% as a wellness visit. I was not supposed to be getting charged. But it looked like they were coding it as a problem visit and thus charging me to my deductible. I am glad I understand my insurance plan because I know from my experience a lot of people DON'T and probably wouldn't have caught this. I called them up and talked to the billing office, and yep, Carey coded the visit wrong. SIGH. You're two for two, woman! It got straightened out in the end, but come onnnn.
Strike two.
I went back another time for the nagging cough from hell that wouldn't go away. This visit was fine enough. I got exactly what I wanted out of it. A Z-pack to kick it, Tylenol w/ Codeine so I could sleep, albuterol inhaler for this awful coughing attacks I'd get where I couldn't breathe. Legit. They said they'd call in the scripts. When I got to the pharmacy (which is at big Barnes, and is always a nightmare, so that didn't help the situation), I waited and waited and waited, and in the end they only called in the antibiotics and the codeine, but not the inhaler. They just flat out forgot to call it in. Called the office and the front desk girl said there was no prescription for an inhaler. So she had to talk to Carey and straighten it out blah blah blah, in the mean time I had to leave because I had already been waiting 45 minutes and wanted to get out of there. In the end they called it into Walgreens which is closer, but the inhaler was really expensive there for insurance reasons (because I didn't want to deal with Barnes again). Anyway. If they hadn't screwed up I would have saved a lot of time and money.
Strike THREE.
I know people make mistakes. But they are 3 for 3 and when these mistakes cost ME valuable time and money, it's pretty irritating.
I really want to like this place. I love the idea that they incorporate both holistic healing and modern Western medicine into their practice. I was happy that during my annual/pap I was basically able to tell them what I want done (as far as what I wanted tested in my bloodwork and the like...there are things that I feel like I don't need and things I was curious to know, and they accomodated that). Everyone was very nice.
But I don't know how worth it it is. Too much damn hassle. I don't know if I need to see someone other than Carey (since all the screw-ups seemed to lead back to her), but I'm thinking of changing PCPs altogether. Any suggestions? read more
