Weaver Park was named in honor of Karl Weaver Sr. who lived in the Sanders Park section of Pompano Beach. Mr. Weaver was a businessman and community leader who was the first black person elected to the Pompano Beach City Commission in 1973. He championed members of his community to get better housing, education, and jobs. One of his greatest successes while in office was to annex Collier County. Mr. Weaver died of lung cancer on May 25, 2006 at the age of 69.
Weaver Park is near where Mr. Weaver used to live. I was kind of shocked at how large this park is, a very roomy 12.4 acres along 1-95. Park amenities include pavilion shelters, picnic areas, grills, restrooms, a paved exercise path, playgrounds, basketball, and exercise area. There is also public art in the form of a colorful painted pompano fish sculpture. The pompano fish is the City's namesake and a symbol of the identity of Pompano residents.
Weaver Park is very clean and well maintained and looks like a nice place to exercise or have a party. Unfortunately parts of the park seemed to be a homeless hangout. read more
