The marker reads, "In 1977 WLOK became Memphis' first African-American owned radio station. Established on this site, Gilliam Communications' WLOK is a family-oriented format on which many of the nation's top African-American leaders have appeared. Several of the nation's leading disc jockeys starred here. WLOK's community involvement includes college scholarships and the renowned WLOK Stone Soul Picnic. Meaning, I dance around with a glass of wine like a damned fool. I agree with David, they love Al Green and rightfully so. I stumbled upon this station when we first moved here and immediately programmed it into my presets. Why you ask? Because Al Green was pouring through my car speakers and any station that still plays Al is a-ok in my book. I have also been known to listen to a little Steve Harvey morning show, but my favorite is Downtown Jackson Brown. His voice just reeks soul and I love that.
