If there's anything you need to know about Monson, Glenn (the president of the Monson Historical…read moreSociety) is your guy! I was lucky enough to get an off-season tour of the historical society and museum during my November stay in Monson, and Glenn was a treasure trove of information about the town and its history. Downstairs is a little gift shop that includes prints of old negatives of Monson families and the slate mines, etc., paintings, maps, calendars, books by Monson writers or about the town, as well as Monson memorabilia. There's also a well-organized back room where the archive is--complete with records and letters from the Civil War, WWI, and WWII. I'm amazed at the wealth of information the historical society has collected through the years! Upstairs is the museum. It's quite a large space and has all sorts of artifacts of the town, including items from Moosehead Furniture, Sheldon Slate, Monson Academy, and items brought over by the early immigrants to the town. For a small town, it's got quite a bit of interesting history and it's all very well-preserved and documented. The historical society is super informative and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and it's open!

The Center Theatre is a great movie theater, music venue and more here in the area. They have…read morecommunity business sponsors and supportive members, which helps them charge very reasonable prices for tickets. There are also matinee showings for a bit less than that. They show a couple of first-run movies per month, a classic film here and there, as well as hosting concerts featuring local and regional performers. You can even rent the outside marquee for a day to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other special day for a loved one or friend. All in all, The Center Theatre is a great source of entertainment and an active community partner as well. My wife was interested in a limited run documentary film she learned about, and she was able to work with theater management to set up a showing. We became members, which is not an expensive proposition, and enjoy a few benefits like discount tickets and attending their classic movie nights free, and so on. You will find their entertainment schedule on their website, and usually a sheet with the month's schedule on the counter if you prefer something on paper.
