But their offers are not great and the evaluator was a bit fussy about what he wanted. He did suggest donating to friends of the library. So I don't bother trying to bring the books I am surrendering. (Which is a tough thing for me to do, but it needs to be done!)

I was rudely told, actually ordered, out of the blue, with no warning or previous interaction, to pick up the 4 vinyl records, a CD and 2 books that my husband and I wanted to purchase, because they were temporarily placed on top other records as we were getting ready to pay and leave the store. I asked if the woman was the owner of the store and I told them that the attitude was unacceptable and uncalled for. She kept being rude and at that point I got upset and told her to f**k off. Well, instead of apologizing we were told that they had the right to refuse service, and we were asked to leave. I see, from some of the other reviews I've read, that this is common and acceptable behavior at Second Story Books. I've always believed in supporting the local businesses over the internet, but there is no way in hell that I would ever walk back into that store.

If you find the Fenton Street library entrance, you've found Bump. Here you will find various teas (ask to be pointed to the menu - it's not on the board), coffees, BAKED GOODIES, sandwiches, and (at least seasonally) CIDER. The baked goodies selection varies from day to day, but I've ALWAYS found DONUTS (sometimes one or two types - today there ware at least 6!! - hard to choose!). The donuts are from a local bakery called WOODMOOR and are always fresh. If you're into VINYL, there are also a few bins of new records. It's a bit difficult to describe but if you walk on the Fenton St, you ll see little flags/banners (attached in my pictures). Follow them and go past the railing and the store is on the first floor. It's confusing because the address is 900 Wayne but it is easier to get to from Fenton. They could use a small banner on Wayne. The place itself is okay. The cronuts and bagels were fine. Nothing special. The seating inside was a bit odd. The barista area looked pretty clean though. The service was fast. There wasn't enough variety of food. If you want a quick bagel and coffee, it is okay but otherwise I would pass.

Smash Records continues to be the record store it started as, an indie shop selling punk, hardcore, metal, etc. records, books, CDs, and so on. They've got new and used media and books. The clothing selection is pretty rad too with skater stuff, band shirts, and so on. This is one of my favorite places to crate dig. The vibe is totally old school DC punk rock and I really love how they've held on to those roots and beliefs. I've caught a couple of live shows here as well. Absolutely one of the best places for music shopping. If you're in DC, show them some love.

Every single experience I have had they welcome me at the door and encourage me that if I have any questions at all to feel free to ask. Any time I have had questions they have been more than helpful in informing my purchase. Some of the items could be placed to a closer price point to online retailers, but for the cost of convenience a lot of their selection is worth it. It's been a staple of the community for years and has improved greatly over the last decade in my own opinion. They did move stuff to their new location in DC the last time I had checked but I can't fault them for wanted to expand, I will just have to take a trip over there eventually!

He offered me coffee and gave me the history of the bookstore. He even took his time to grind me a bag of coffee!!! Not to mention Chardai personally reached out to me on status of book swag that I was looking for! That follow up and follow through really matters! Amazing staff! The book selection is phenomenal and even had the new Kennedy Ryan release available! The books are categorized by genre which makes it easy for shopping. They have vinyls for sale In the front of the store and in their back area. In the back is this super cute grandmas basement type setup with vintage couch seating, walls of crates of vinyls, a DJ booth AND a vinyl listening station that allows you to sample the vinyls. How cool is that?! They also have cute trinkets available such as stickers, greeting cards and pins. They even have one-of-a-kind coffee table books! And the coffee?!? WOW! A cup of coffee and your favorite book for less than $20?! Absolutely! And as you're walking out, check out the flyer at the back of the door as they have authors and other events posted! Outside has a small seating area and a clearance book section to check out. It's easy to visit a bookstore and find all the feature books to be by the same people: James Patterson, Colleen Hoover, and Taylor Jenkins Reid. That's great, but what about other authors and genres?? I saw not one of the previously mentioned books (and I loved it), but instead authors and titles I'd never heard of. I ended up purchasing two titles I knew nothing about. They say never judge books by the cover? Why not? If they're beautiful, then buy them. That's what I did, and I loved both books! The selection was incredible, and certain books had blurbs written by the staff to help with your decision-making. This store has so much to offer for a variety of audiences. Give it a try next time you're in Silver Spring.
