If you think Wayne is in a bad state, check out the Garth State. Dana Carvey is like - long gone. Pretty cool University in Suburban Detroit right near the downtown. The area around it has definitely been rejuvenated and gentrified for all the students who obviously have a decent amount of money if they're coming to school here. I mean let's face it grants and scholarships and all that be damned - it still costs a f***ing sh**load of money to go to college so the poorest of the inner city Detroit people are not going to be able to come here are they. For this reason you do have some problems on campus between poor neighbours and richer students. That happens in a lot of urban college campuses. Just watch your back around here, and this country needs to focus a bit more on socialism and taking care of our own, instead of me me me destructive capitalism.

The admission department will not answer any calls. I come to the welcome center to have appointment and see some one to talk to. And i have been waiting for 2.5 hours and no one show up

I was in the art therapy masters for 2019. I am have a masters of social worker and a number of years working with veterans and crisis intervention. I found the art therapy program at Wayne State to be colorblind to the point of being dangerous. In this day and age no mental health professional can afford to be wishywashy about cultural competence and integrative care. Before my first class started Dr Karen Shurgin described her clients as crazy. The phrase crazy and nuts was used multiple times through out the duration of the course. In one assignment we discussed an article about the impact of VHS technology on art therapy. Come on people this is 2020. Why are future mental health professionals trained with such garbage? On a mid term for another class the professor has a question about a suicide prevention program that doesn't exist, has no historical relevance and the professor couldn't even describe what the program was. As a veteran and social worker who's worked with veterans and don't several suicide crisis interventions providing information like this to students is dangerous to the point negligent. I'd call it malpractice education. The professor would also talk over and treat anyone that disagreed with her with hostility. Going so far as to use personal bias in the grading process. I've never seen a more lazy professor. What kinda professor begs classrooms of students to write papers as short as possible because she doesn't like reading student papers. Why would anyone want to be educated by someone with such an ego. I returned from a 2 week veteran trauma program in Boston where art therapy was used with veterans. In a very intense way dealing directly with trauma. But when I return to the class Dr Shurgin is laughing at her own clients, telling student in a class that mania looks fun, and using interpretative models from the 1950s that teach art therapist to look for penis and vagina symbolism. It's archaic. I filed a discrimination complaint with the equal opportunity department. Which took over 6 months to respond. The student handbook says I'm supposed to be provided with a response in no less than 90 days or a message telling me what the new response time is. Apparently bold bigotry and academic incompetence requires more evidence than students testimony. Today I learned that the Wayne State University has no interest in protecting students rights or providing a contemporary education. Students are learning garbage. How many clients with be hurt by poorly trained art therapist? This isn't a matter for debate. Art therapy an neuroscience, and many other art therapy models that are evidence based and the golden standard though out the country are forgiven topics. I also filed an accreditation complaint with the National art therapy association. Today Tommy Martin emailed me back and stated that there is no appeals process. But the student handbook states their is an appeals process and the chief of staff is the last say. Why would the equal opportunity office lie to students about their student rights when filing disability complaints?

Located in Detroit's Cultural Center area, surrounded by libraries and museums, Wayne State University offers over 350 majors for those seeking higher education at an urban university. Considered a research intensive university Motown's Wayne State finds itself ranked in the 201-300 range worldwide, putting it alongside the likes of such universities as Georgetown, University of Notre Dame, and Wake Forest. Its Law School is ranked as one of the top 100 and Wayne States ever expanding Medical School is among the nation's top 125 schools. Wayne State plays an integral part in driving Detroit's economical, educational, and cultural hub sponsoring such events like the Detroit Festival of the Arts. Its proximity to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Public Library, Science Center, and the Detroit Historical Museum, makes this university a learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. The university is recently expanding to cater to its swelling student body by constructing more parking and more student housing. Fortunately, the local neighborhoods offer charming apartments and flats at a reasonable price. In addition, a majority of Warriors (the school's mascot) commute from local urban and suburban areas. Some notable Wayne State graduates include Saturday Night Lives' Tim Meadows, Inside The Actors Studio's James Lipton, actor Tom Sizemore, Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson, and yes, me. Changing my major 4 or 5 times while enrolled I had a chance to experience a multitude of the majors the college offers including fashion design, public relations, social work, and English. Through my almost decade long trek through college at Wayne State I was fortunate to have a multitude of professors that have forever influence my life for the better, especially in the English department. On the contrary, the student services is a stroll through hell. I had to continually request transcripts, graduation papers and more a monumental amount of times. Thankfully, the knowledge my noggin was filled with through discussions and labs outweighs the trials and tribulations.

There were professors in the English department, Professor Crabtree, that I learned a lot from, and she was great!

After my four years up, I went straight to Henry Ford College and began studying Physics, Psychology, Philosophy and Music, eventually earning a degree in Liberal Arts. Because all of the teachers there are top notch and highly recruited by many other prestigious schools, HFC administrators do a fantastic job of curating these world-class level professors whom share a passion for their subject matter and for teaching that subject matter to everyone willing to learn. My all-time favorite teacher, from all of my years in public school, and my time in Naval schools and even my time at UofM AA included, was the incomparable Peter Putnam at HFC. Mr. Putnam normally taught any and every English class that he could, and likewise I took every single class that I could with Mr. Putnam, who had a massive impact on my life and I owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. Had it not been for my phenomenal education at HFC, I would not have earned an academic scholarship to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, which would further my education and expanded my sense of who I was and more importantly, who I could become. The common latin phrase: "Scientia potentia est" which means "Knowledge Is Power" is a maxim that I have witnessed proven in my life, myriad times, and HFC helped send me on that path and I will be forever indebted to institution and my specific teachers. Dr. Azar was a treasure as well, and he also altered the direction of my life, again, for tremendous benefit to me, and eventually for my children as well. There are many different teachers & professors there that I could espouse, yet HFC is the organization that recruits these special teachers and deserves credit for creating a phenomenal center for learning. I cannot overstate what a superlative institution HFC is. They were the driving factor that helped me earn an Academic scholarship at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and not only will I be forever grateful, but there were many classes at HFC that were superior to UofM. I bleed Maize & Blue, through & through, but HFC made that dream possible. While I was at HFC, I felt that I should give back somehow, and they quickly set me up with their Special Needs department and began giving me as many struggling students that they could and I learned that I love tutoring and that I am exceptional at doing it. Again, I have to thank HFC, for revealing my character. I simply cannot recommend HFC highly enough, anyone who is even remotely considering it, just sign up and begin your world class education. In one case I was taking an art class and apparently the teacher did not like the direction of my drawing, so instead of telling me what I should do, he took my paper and pencil away from me and started doing it himself. After another bad experience in another art class I basically quit and never really did art again after that, which is sad because I really enjoyed it. Then in psychology class that I took, I had a teacher who decided that instead of teaching us about psychology, he was going to teach us about the anatomy of the brain. We spent the entire class learning about the anatomy of the brain and then towards the end of the semester, he announced that instead of a final exam, there would be a class and if we showed up we passed and we didn't I guess we did not pass. Well on the last day of class the teacher did not show up. So I guess the school just did some kind of average of our previous test scores for that class. Then in a sociology class I had a teacher who kept insisting that he was going to politicize us. We also had an older senior classmate in this class which I personally found refreshing, but the teacher treated this classmate terribly and I felt really bad for him. Thankfully I think that schools have progressed beyond this and now treat older students much better than that. I'm sure this school has improved over the years, so I wouldn't necessarily consider my review to be very relevant for today, however, I'm adding it as a cautionary tale for people who may accept improper teaching methods and not question it or decide to find a better teacher or class. Also, I've been holding this in a long time and I still think about it from time to time and how my future could have been different if my experience had been better or if I found a better way to handle it. Sadly, the school counselors during this time period were not very helpful either.

And while it's not quite the same as the bar hopping, house partying, beer bonging, roomate arguing, cold pizza for breakfast days as my undergrad - I really have no complaints about the Troy center! Located on Maple between John R & Stephenson Highway, it's pretty easy to get to - just a couple miles off of I-75. Clear sign from the road, and one main entrance to get inside. It houses only a small collection of classrooms, but even if you ignored your professor emails before the first day of class, there is an electronic screen scrolling the various courses and which room they are located in. There is a large kitchen with a number of tables and chairs, a few vending machines that are always well stocked, and a refrigerator and microwave for community use. In the lobby of the building is also the "Maple Street Deli", which is a small store run by the tiniest, most delightful Asian woman. She will make a small selection of sandwiches and salads fresh for you, and also sell you any number of chips, candy, beverages, and granola bars. She'll always greet you with a smile and remind you to wash that apple you just bought before you eat it. She keeps the Maple Street Deli open even on weekends, so us folks in a Saturday class aer still able to get a quick lunch without leaving the premesis. The bathrooms are large and impeccably clean at all times. I don't know how often the cleaning staff is in there (or maybe we are just a neat and tidy group that doesn't dirty it?) but there is never so much as a paper towel on the floor or splash of water on the sink. Classrooms are set up with large tables and plush rolling desk chairs. They're not stingy with the AC, to the point that I usually make sure to bring an extra hoody or sweater to keep from being chilled. Another great asset to this center is the student work room, stocked with a handful of computers and the crown jewel - a beautiful, new copier/printer that is always fully stacked with paper, can collate AND staple as it copies...never jams or runs out of toner it seems. You may be thinking, "so? big deal - seems like something that would be standard." But ooooh no. I have spent much time in educational facilities and this is not always the case. Facilities aside, any emails I send to the folks in the student services offices here are responded to promptly - like, within the half hour. So thanks CMU Troy for making graduate degrees as convienent and pleasant as possible. (Until I think about the thousands of dollars in tuition floating out of my pocket each semester.)

The school is located midtown and has a safe feeling to it thanks to the campus police. The parking lots are huge but have had troubles to get in without a student card being available. Also the open parking lot isn't available for everyone specially for overnight parking. Didn't know that once and got a ticket. The road side parking is not free either, but is reasonable around $1/hr and if you download the Park Detroit app, it's about $1.15 for the same hour. The fines used to be reasonable about a year ago being $10 max, which has now gone upto $45 which is ludicrous. Looks like many suffer to this as the parking officer keeps on making rounds quite regularly. A great amount of restaurants and fast food options are available in and around the campus. Some have appeared recently, which I believe has made the area a bit more classy and busy. La Feria my personal favorite along with Chartreuse (a bit expensive side). There is food for one and all, as the Seva covers great option for vegans and vegetarians. A mix of history and architecture with new and old buildings alike. A new tram service and rails are in the plans as you see work carried on Woodward. Easy access to I-75, M-10 and I-94 makes it easy to connect to all the Detroit suburbs, including the Bridge to Canada on I-96 which is about 3 miles away and tunnel to Canada which is about 4 miles south on M-10. The on-campus living is decent with Deroy and Chattsworth apartments based on campus have reasonable prices and availability throughout each semester. They do get filled up fast so you want to make sure you reach out them or seniors transferring lease ASAP. Chattsworth is a bit old building and doesn't have centralized AC, on the other hand, Deroy gives you this luxury with a bit more cost and options of furnished apartments. There are dorms for undergraduate students available as well, which I don't know much about but a thing to look into. Quality education specially in Biological Science department as my wife graduated recently and has got a fair deal of biological science experience here. Good and helpful professors and guide makes it easy for students to get a direction towards success in life. All in all a very good place to be in. There is a bit of trouble on campus sometimes with crime, and an occasional noise problem during the night time, which can keep you awake (Deroy). If you ignore that, this is not a bad place to get your education started.
