I waited on hold for 32 minutes in the middle of the work day with the most annoying and persistent hold music. I am hard of hearing so I have to wear headphones for phone calls and I had them turned way down because of the incessant ringing in the aforementioned hold music. Suddenly, someone picked up and I scrambled to adjust the volume on my phone. The lady on the other end rudely said "I can't hear you!" as I hurriedly tried to explain to her that I was fixing my headphones. She immediately hung up on me. I was fuming of course but I needed my issue addressed so I immediately called back. This time I only waited 24 minutes and kept my headphones on full blast while I listened to the annoying hold music. The same rude lady answered the phone and I, not wanting to be hung up on again after an hour of my life wasted, quickly explained that I needed to change my mailing address. She was almost comically rude and accused me of committing fraud. At this point I burst out laughing and she proceeded to, for the second time in an hour, hang up on me. The funniest thing is that the Maine DMV website says you can't change your address online and you need to speak to someone but I sent an email and they did it without any issue. So glad I wasted all that time to be told incorrect info by someone on a power trip. Guess I wasn't committing fraud after all! Who knew??? If you have to choose between having your fingernails torn out or talking to the lady at this office, I guess I'd pick the latter but otherwise? Avoid at all costs.

I was helped by an amazing lady on the phone who guided me through what I would need for my CDL transfer (my out of state license expired while I was recovering from surgery) and helped me get dialed in prior to coming in. When I visited the site in person, I was fortunate enough to have the same lady, I wish I had written her name down, she was amazing and helped me through the process with candor, precision and some laughs. I was in an out in 30 minutes and had everything I needed done finished with perfection. I wish every states BMV/DMV operated with this level of efficiency and customer care!

I love audiobooks and have become a big fan of the Libby app. But the selection at some libraries…read moreis really disappointing. If I have a few minutes when I travel I sometimes stop to see if I can get cards from other libraries in the hope that that can broaden my Libby catalog. But this is a tiny library. An itsy, bitsy, little library. When I asked at nearby libraries if I could get a library card they politely explained that because I wasn't a local taxpayer I sadly could not. When I asked here the gal said "Sure!". She whips out an index card and asks me for my contact info. When I hand it back to her she puts a bar code on it and explains that this piece of paper is my new library card. "So this index card is my library card?" "Yep." "And it stays in the library?" "Yep." The gal explained that they did not have on-line audiobooks and were not associated with the Libby app but she encouraged me to check out their books on CD selection. A little disappointed, I came across Alice in Wonderland and chose that. She checked me out and told me the date it was due. Then she whispered "Bring it back whenever you can. There's no fines." Alice in Wonderland was a weird book and I wouldn't recommend it. But the New Vineyard Library is a joy. The gal was wonderful and it was a pleasure to visit. And when I dropped off the CDs a few days later I discovered that they leave their wifi on even when the library is closed. In a region where cell service is rare and 4G even rarer 24hr wifi may be the best feature of this library!

Nestled in Augusta, Maine, the capitol building is large and appeared pretty plain when we first arrived. There is visitor parking available on the side and in the back of the building. So when we arrived in the back, it looked like a large, unremarkable, white building. We decided to take a peek inside (it was nearly closing, so it was just a peek) and then take a walk around the perimeter. I'm so glad we did. The view from the front is pillared with and rotunda topped. It was lovely. The grounds aren't extensive but well appointed on the pathway leading to the front. We were happy we made the stop!

The Crate Museum is off the beaten path (almost in Bangor, ME), but is an absolutely grassroots-created museum and well maintained by people (Ross family) who honestly wish to share Charles Lindbergh's realized dream of flying solo across the Atlantic in 1927 with anyone and everyone with a dream. The museum itself IS the crate in which the plane fuselage was shipped back to the states from Europe. It includes a collection of the history behind the flight and the delivery of the crate to the Ross residence. Outside the crate are inspirational quotes posted onto the trees, a beautiful view toward the southeast, a motivational carrot ... and the fresh Maine air and woods. The museum can be visited at any time, but the best way to experience the museum is by attending CRATE DAY (early June, call for exact dates and times), which most recently was today. WHAT IS CRATE DAY Crate Day is a small, but nationally recognized "Fly-Over" event where military planes and helicopters fly over, but the helicopters stick around. There is a maze, an amazing flag demonstration, a fire truck, a state trooper, old cars, hot rods, [bring cold water and lunch!] Other "presentation" people are invited to share their hobbies (illustration, stone carving, metal art, model airplanes/helicopters, Engineers without Borders) with the crowd of maybe 200 people. WHY This day highlights the Ross family who honestly want people, especially youngsters (elementary school), to realize that they have the ability to achieve anything they believe they can do. It just takes a little encouragement, a little motivation (perhaps by carrot). BETTER THAN YOU'D EXPECT Man, and it is spectacular! Mostly locals attend, but the effort put into the day has clearly made its mark -- + by the helicopter landing pad that was recently built to allow a second helicopter to stick around, + by US soldiers who fly for 6 hours from VIRGINIA to MAINE on a historic Chinook helicopter, + by the "Spirit of Canaan", the little plane RIDE on a zip line (so fun) and of course + by the genuine excitement felt by everyone there The highlight for me was all the learning I did today. I learned that those military helicopters are difficult to sit in (I hit my head on every surface trying to squeeze in), that being 15 ft in the air inside a thin wooden box of a "plane" is scary, that model helicopters cost an arm and a leg but they rock, and that the kids actually take something positive away from this great event (1 young guy who had come to Crate Day 5 years ago decided to come back just to let Larry Ross know that the day made an impact on him and he'll never forget it). Wow. Though it might take eight years to make it up to Canaan ME for Crate Day, you'll be glad you did.

The women come to the Margaret Chase Smith Library for dinner and a tour of the space. The library is her home and an addition showcasing many of her achievements and honors over the years of her service to our country. The library itself is quite impressive with photos, memorabilia and the 97+ hoods from her honorary degrees. She was a women ahead of her times, or right where she needed to be to make change in our country for women. It is a drive to get to the MCS Library, but really worth it. If you have daughters, this is a great opportunity to inspire them to be all they can be, but also to learn what Margaret Chase Smith went through and endured as a women, a politician and leader for Maine and our country.

Now envision the perfect little library in a cute little brick building with lovely details inside and out, the library desk right up front, and the walls filled with books; that is the Cary Memorial Library. There is a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction, and there are very interesting books about Maine and the history of the Town of Wayne. The library is very involved in town events and every year they hold book sales, silent auctions, lectures, readings by authors, and a lobster roll sale. There is a terrific children's book section and plenty of toys to play with. In short, the Cary Memorial Library reflects the town of Wayne; welcoming, relaxing, delightful.

The best thing about this library is it gives you an insiders view to the lives of residents of Wayne, Maine - many of them come to volunteer, get books, relax or just hang out. I'm working my way through the Maine State Parks Passport and this spot was listed in it…read more Unfortunately, when we visited the fort was entirely under construction and the passport box had been removed, so no stamp for us. I'm not sure this is a "destination" spot for anyone who doesn't live immediately in the area; if you were (hyper)local, this for sure is a great place to come walk your dog, sit with a picnic or a book to enjoy on the expanses of green grasa, or bring your family for an event (which I imagine they do since there's a bandstand; more information online suggested the park has been used for concerts, movie screenings, July 4th celebrations, and more). We found two random Adriondack chairs sitting right by the water's edge, and took some time to watch loons! There's a placard that reads, "The blockhouse is the only building the remains of a larger fort complex, built by British-Americans in 1754-1755 to defend the upper Kennebec River Valley from possible attack... in 1966 the State of Maine acquired this blockhouse which was all that remained of the original fort and restored it... in 1987, flood waters rose to eight feet up the side of the fort and its logs floated apart, drifting as far south as Dresden. These were recovered and reassembled, restorying the old blockhouse to its original appearance."
