Pickwick Cottages - Lake Huron and Sauble Beach.

Pickwick Cottages

(2 reviews)

If you aren't familiar with the location, I can sum it up in one word, BEACH!…read moreSauble Beach is one of the premiere beaches in Canada and listed on surf-forecast.com which has wind, wave, water temp, swell info, etc., for surf breaks around the world. The area where Pickwick is located is on the Saugeen Nation land which is governed and run by the local natives. Sauble is the second longest fresh water beach in the world and one of the few that allows driving on since it's quite wide. There is a berm maintained that divides the swimming side and the road side so the cars are not normally an issue. The cottages are hit or miss depending on which one you select. Each has its own idiosyncrasies and/or advantages. The one we had was set back in the trees somewhat so was more sheltered than the others close to the shore so campfires and barbeques were easier but being in the shade wasn't ideal when the weather got cooler. Since many of the cottages were built in the 1940s they are very rustic and basically one step above camping. They are all outfitted with a kitchen that has most of the items needed for basic food prep, but not ideal for a nice meal. The bedrooms were small and cramped, and the bathroom door wouldn't close all the way. Some other cottages were nicer with real bathrooms and kitchens and nice bedrooms with closets but they cost more and can be a challenge to book because they are in such demand. There are a group of Pickwick cottages on the other side of the road which are cheaper, but you won't be able to pour yourself a coffee and drink it at the beach as simply and easily. If you only use the cottage for sleeping there wouldn't be a problem. On the plus side, the hosts were very accommodating and were responsive promptly answering email requests for more firewood, etc. And the location is superb! You can walk a few steps to the Trading Post for convenience items and ice cream. Or an easy bicycle ride on 2 lane roads with little traffic on them gets you right into the town of Sauble with most services you could need. I love this place!

After months of saving and scrimping for our family vacation, the only one we take all year by the…read moreway. Pickwick was recommend by a friend from work, and we thought we knew what to expect. We knew going in it was nothing fancy basically just a roof over our heads a shower , fridge, so we were not expecting much. When we arrived the "cottage" upon first glance was what we expected, (so we thought. ) the " cottage" itself was painted a very dark green color, we soon realized that it should have been white like what were they thinking painting it that dark color? It was so hot inside the whole time we were there it never dropped under 90 degrees! There are no windows on the south side of the building and the windows that we were able to get open didn't even get so much as a slight breeze, we love the heat and who doesn't want a summer vacation at the beach to be hot! But this was almost sickening trying to sleep in an oven is as close as I can describe, stagnant, heavy air . We booked a 5 day vacation but left after two days the conditions s were the worst I've ever seen. One of Our kids was physically ill and vomiting by the second day and it took 2-3 days just to recover from this experience. Although i think it was heat stroke it could have been the mold growing in the bathroom behind and around the toilet. The very best thing about this visit here was the beach if not for that I don't think we can would have lasted 24 hours, honestly we were there at the beach all day both days until we eventually had to get out of the sun or go to eat but dreaded going up to cottage to do so , there was no escaping the heat not a tree not an umbrella, nothing My husband actually opted to sleep in our vehicle the second night just to escape it. My advice before you rent a cottage, go look at it ......really look at it .

A A A On Georgian Bay Cottage Rentals

We stayed at AAA cottages on Georgian bay for the August long weekend 4th -7th. Upon entering the…read morecottage it did not look like pictures provided on the Facebook page. I was not expecting anything like the ritz but it was not the cleanest place I have stayed. The food cupboard had crumbs in it the fridge was not clean and we were told the kitchen would have some items like pots and frying pan and there was one pot. Thank god we brought our own. We proceeded into the bedrooms where all the bedding had stains on it. My room in particular had the window left open before we arrived and it had rained so my left side of the bed was soaked. I had to remove all bedding and allow the mattress to dry before using my own bedding (again thank god we brought it the owner had said we didn't need it). We then went to use the BBQ which was absolutely disgusting and has probably not been cleaned since it was brought to the cottage. We cleaned out the BBQ and cleaned the racks. The owners cottage was next door which we had no issue with. However her kid kept coming over to visit (also fine) but he started to walk into the cottage uninvited and personally I felt a little invaded in the space which we were renting for the weekend. It was an adult weekend with no kids and all of a sudden we were responsible for someone's else child for periods of time. There was no garbage bin to store you bags in before dumping we were told to keep them in the cottage with us. she had other guests using a bathroom that was attached to our cottage and should have been for our use. We had a cock roach siting in one bedroom and my phone had fallen behind the stove and when we pulled it out there were multiple dead ones and it was FILTHY. You could not get on the dock unless you walked through water to get on it. The advertised "pool" was nothing like the pictures it was full of Algae, actually gross looking like a green swamp. And unbelievably Samantha the owner tells us it's fine to still swim in - as if anyone of us is getting into that. Upon leaving we left the bedding off the bed because it clearly needed to be cleaned, we scrubbed the fridge and all cupboards, counters, floors, picked up and removed all garbage from the property. I was told I would receive my deposit back within a few days of leaving and I cannot even get the cottage owner to answer a call from me or text. When I posted on her Facebook about receiving some some communication back she blocked me. DO NOT RENT HERE - NIGHTMARE

Braemar Cabins - One of two bedrooms

Braemar Cabins

I think this was one of the most comfortable non-hotel experience I've ever had. Not exactly a…read morecottage and far from a camping experience, the cabins here are built for a short or a long term stay in the heart of Port Elgin. Its steps away from the main beach (about 15 min walk) and a short drive from the town. Its relaxing here. Not sure what to expect, when we got here its in the middle of a residential area. Basically a big house (the owners) and small cabins surrounding the rest of the lot (4). I thought it was weird, but noticed some other neighhbours had this setup as well. Turns out the whole area was cabins and small cottages, with a lot more trees, but recently had been torn down to make way for large homes. The cabin was small but really cozy. You don't need more than this. 2 bedrooms, kitchenette with sink, microwave, hot stove, big fridge, coffee maker (but bring your own coffee and filters) and lots of dishes and utensils. There a flush toilet (key!), sofa, small eat-in area, your own bbq and 2 muskoka chairs on the porch. In the morning, we ate brekkie and watched the owners 2 kids play around in the sandbox and swings. In the evening, we made our bbq and ate it outside while I held a fly swatter at intruders. In the evening, the owners started a bonfire and we shared beers and good conversation. The bedrooms are comfy with ample blankets provided, also a heater for colder nights. There's also two showers (bonus!) On the right side of the main house. Most importantly the cabin and facilities was CLEAN. As princessy as I am, the place exceeded my expectations for these kinds of things. And rightly so, the owner Krissy prides herself in this and maintains each cabin as If it were her own. If she wouldn't stay there, neither will you. At $90 a night, it was easy to book at their email braemarcabins@gmail.com
