It's a commercial bookshop, of course, with the advantages and disadvantages that brings.
So - it has a huge range of books over 3 floors (and a Costa Cafe upstairs), and an ordering service which has hopefully recovered from the chaos noted in Private Eye a while back. And I like the staff recommendations (if they're genuine and don't come in bulk from ehad office...), as they do give you some idea of what the book concerned is like.
But with books available on the net at prices usually lower than any shop can sell them at, the temptation is to find the books you like in the shop, and then order them on line. We'll regret it when bookshops finally go out of business...
Waterstones is, in my humble opinion, the best shop for new books in Bath, despite some decent competition from the independents. As they can't compete on price, they have to compete on range and service and, much as I would love to champion an independent, I have to give my top marks to Waterstones. read more
