Tails is located in a convenient spot downtown with good parking spaces all around it. It's easy to pop inside take a peek (or stay for an hour) and go shop at another store, like the Paper Gourmet about 20 feet away. Tails is open Monday-Friday 11:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 10am-2:00pm. Real hours! Not bad for an all-volunteer business. They have a fairly wide selection (which means for any book lover it's hard to leave empty-handed). Lots of Scholastic books for kids. Some military history. Recent NY Times bestsellers, too. Many of the books are in new condition and so you can even do your Christmas shopping here. Some books definitely are not pristine, but that's okay. There are suggested donation prices posted (that even Amazon can't beat) and if you're feeling generous tell them to "keep the change" and know that the dogs and cats will really appreciate your generosity. If you're a bibliophile looking for a fun, friendly volunteer opportunity, this is it. Apply within. Do you have books you no longer want? Hard for some of us to believe, but if you need to re-home some of your literary friends then please consider donating them to Tails. I had been donating mine to the library, but now most of them go to Tails (sorry EPL). They will take books as well as magazines. Drop them off and enjoy the good feeling you get from sharing them with others. It does have one downside, for me. Given the recent renovation inside the building, the place off-gases like crazy. I'm hopeful that as time goes on it will resolve itself, but please use no VOC-paint and finish next time guys (who I realize are not affiliated with Tails, so let's not take it out on them). Overall, it's a cozy book nook that you can peacefully enjoy and even make new friends. The volunteers that I've met have all been sweet, kind, and very helpful. Auburn is blessed to have this spot open up. Oh, if only it stays here!!

I visited Shelter Ministries Thrift Shop today, and what a disaster. NOTHING had prices on it. I…read moreasked a volunteer about the prices, and she tried to help but said she wasn't sure because she was new. I understand being new, but items should absolutely be priced so customers don't have to guess. Another thing I noticed while looking around is how extremely small the shopping area is. The building itself is huge, and I know the entire layout because I've been there before it became a thrift store and food pantry. It's surprising that such a tiny portion is actually used for the store. Now let's talk about the pricing. Pants are $5.00 each -- for used pants. Shirts and pajamas are $3.00. Kids clothes are $3-$5 depending on what you pick. Socks are $1.00 a pair... for used socks! And then there are the used undergarments. VERY used underwear and bras are $3.00 EACH. Used. Most of them showed extreme wear. That's honestly shocking. The store itself is extremely disorganized. Nothing makes any sense and there is no clear system to how things are arranged. Items are placed everywhere with no rhyme or reason. It's so cramped and packed that only one person can comfortably shop in an area at a time. Another thing that really bothered me: while I was there, four volunteers were going through donated items and setting certain things off to the side that they were planning to take home. So if you donate to this thrift shop thinking everything will go back to the community, just know that some items appear to be getting picked through first. Overall, the place felt chaotic, overpriced for the condition of items, and poorly organized. It really needs better pricing, better organization, and much better use of the large space available.

Indiana's official "State Historic Sites" are remarkable gems bringing life to treasured Indiana…read morememories. The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site is located in Rome City, a Noble County city located on Sylvan Lake. This is one of two homes of Stratton-Porter to be named state historic sites (the other is Limberlost). Considered Stratton-Porter's "cabin," this home is located among 148 acres and surrounded by fields, woods, and formal gardens. Did you know that Stratton-Porter is Indiana's most widely read female author? She was also a nature photographer, naturist, and entrepreneur. Her novels include "The Song of the Cardinal" and "Michael O' Halloran." The Carriage House Visitor Center is a great place to stop when here. You can wander around the grounds, explore her library, and even watch rare video footage of this early 20th century writer. Admission is free to Indiana State Museum members and children under the age of 3. Otherwise, it's $6 for ages 3-17, $5 for Indiana college students (ID required), $8 for seniors (60+), and $9 for other adults. Access Pass members are also $5. Indoor tours are only available by reservation for groups of four or more by calling the site at 260.854.3790. Groups of 10 or more receive $1 off full-priced admission per person, based on age. Admission is FREE for pre-registered, accredited schools and homeschool groups of 10 or more K-12 students. It's important to note that the site is open April-November. Accessibility is a bit inconsistent, though given the age of the house that's to be expected. There's definitely a good effort made (as is true for most historic sites). I did feel like a few tweaks could have improved it a bit (thus the 4-star), however, I still had lots I could enjoy here and I found it incredibly relaxing. As a writer myself, there's something awesome about enjoying Indiana's writing history. You can also host events here! I'm a big fan of Indiana's state historic sites and I'm trying to make my way to all of them. This is a definite gem and should be considered for a stop if in the Noble County (think Kendallville) area.

They have an excellent selection of Catholic Christian gifts and goods. Their book selection is ok and is expanding monthly. Their selection of religious DVD's is very good. There is also a room that has a good selection of church goods: candles, pixes, priest's vestments & shirts, etc. One whole wall is covered with various Crucifixes. They also have a good selection of printed Religious Icons mounted on wood, as well as small 2"x3" refrigerator magnets. They do carry First Communion and Baptismal outfits for children. Also, they have a very good selection of religiously oriented greeting cards. (Baptism, Confirmation, Wedding, Funeral, Ordination, Anniversary, Birthday + others) I even saw a soft, stuffed practice "Mass" kit for those boys who would like to play at being a priest!
