She had been in the hospital and then a rehabilitation center after suffering a hip fracture at a retirement community's memory unit in Portland's West Hills. That community looked like a high end hotel and was considered the best in the Portland area. It was expensive but I assumed it meant my mom would be receiving high quality care and that was extremely important to me. I quickly learned that a beautiful facility and high fees do not translate to good care. The staff were pleasant but did not seem connected to the residents and took care of their needs in a perfunctory manner. They were also unskilled when it came to working with memory impaired individuals. When I called to check in, they seemed to have no idea how my mom was doing and my mom was rarely bathed. This concerned me and so I ended up paying extra for personal caregivers several times a week. It was at this facility that my mom was intentionally pushed over by an 18 year-old unskilled caregiver and suffered a extremely painful and debilitating hip fracture. After rehabilitation, my mom arrived at Farmington Square. She was crying and clinging on to me as this was her third transition within a span of 2 months. I was not able to accompany her inside as Farmington was abiding by strict COVID protocols. The staff there went out of their way to help my mom feel at ease and helped her get to know other residents. They also reassured me. Whenever I called to check in on her, they clearly seemed to know and care about her and provided detailed updates. When I spoke with her on the phone, she seemed happy. Once limited visits were allowed, they were very accommodating. In June of 2021, my mom's health declined and she was placed in hospice. Initially, I was going to bring her to my home, but I realized her needs exceeded my capabilities. I felt like I was letting her down but after spending time at Farmington with her, I quickly realized that she had wonderful relationships with the residents and caregivers and it was home to her. My sisters and I stayed with my mom 24/7 during the last weeks of her life and we were able to observe the consistent high quality care that my mom as well as all the other residents received. These outstanding caregivers were all emotionally mature individuals who were naturally compassionate people. They were attuned to my mom's needs and she was receptive to their caregiving because they were well-trained and had developed a trusting relationship with her. The staff and administrators even took care of me and my sisters. They brought in trays with coffee, ice water, and snacks and sat beside us as we struggled to say goodbye to our mom. Through these experiences I have seen the very worst and the very best of care for a loved one. Farmington exemplifies the very best by focusing their efforts on hiring extraordinary caregivers, which meant that my mom was always clean and comfortable and experienced the joy of meaningful relationships and feeling loved at the end of her life.

All of the staff have been consistently warm and friendly as well. The grounds are stunning. Enjoying the beautiful landscaping on the many walking paths has been a treat for us. And the food has been great. It's like being on a cruise ship or living in a resort community with all the amenities. Whatever apprehension we had about moving to a retirement community has been erased by our good fortune in finding such a wonderful new home.

We are offered a wide variety of activities as well as movies in the afternoon and evenings. Overall, it feels like we are all one big family. Last but not least is the heavenly surroundings, the gigantic pine trees, the variety of trees and flowering bushes. The grounds is one large area of natural beauty that is exhilarating to take walks in and be spiritually and physically refreshed.

After all of the surgeries my husband spent a month in the hospital and he was kind of at square one when discharged. When he started at the Pearl he was unable to stand. After his month long stay, he was in good enough shape to slide transfer from a wheelchair to his bed or shower/commode. He was also able to stand for brief periods of time. He progressed enough to join the intensive Rio Rehabilitation Program at Legacy Health. During his stay he received top notch care from Rio staff. They were very caring and met him where he was physically. The therapists pushed him to get where he needed for additional rehabilitation. Thank you Colin and Debra! The nursing staff were caring and as timely as they could be and several nurses were standouts (like Carol and Sherry). The weekends seemed to have less staff so things could take longer. That said, they were upfront about other work they needed to do before being able to help. And when they were helping, they took all the time and care that was needed. The food was very good with several alternatives if the main menu didn't sound good. Bambi was great in helping set up wheelchair transport for appointments, Sondra helped coordinate lots of appointments and helped make Rio happen. Tawnya was amazing at coordinating transition to Rio and backup plans. Penny was the nicest therapy pooch. She lifts everyone's spirits. I highly recommend the Pearl as a skilled nursing facility. I came here with a lot of medical needs including a feeding tube and pump, 24x7 oxygen concentrator and a lung suction device. Not a small feat to support me all day and night but The Pearl was up to the task. I've made friends with many of the staff and I look forward to returning to do some volunteer work if possible. I totally recommend The Pearl if you are in need of rehabilitation services like I was.

The building is decorated in a comfortable style and I am proud to bring guests here. The staff is extraordinarily nice and helpful. The dining room servers are usually teenagers and they try to make us happy. I ask for something and frequently the answer is "of course". There is always something I want to eat. (The onion rings are the best ever). The building is older and appliances are tired. But they work. I am content.

The caregiver said that there just wasn't enough people on the weekends and in the evening to take care of it right away so they had to sit in their assisted living apartment and smell the feces all morning and afternoon until I raised hell and finally it was cleaned up at 4:30 in the afternoon.....you can have this type of care too for 11,000+ a month!

After spending…read morea little over a week in Emergency and the hospital, she needed to be relocated to a skilled nursing facility. I did my part to research information online which included Google, Yelp and other reviews. My Mom has Medicare, so I even researched the Medicare website for their ratings. (www.medicare.gov) I even drove past and walked around my top three choices. All seemed to have a so-so feel to them. [This was all new to me so I didn't know what to expect.] I chose a facility in Hillsboro which received the most 5-star ratings on the Medicare website. After visiting my Mom a few times and interacting with the staff, my wife and I did not get a good feel for the facility at all. It was very dark and gloomy. The staff I interacted with were all very pleasant, however I was not comfortable with their processes. After two or three days, I started to ask friends and coworkers to see if anyone had information on other facilities. Luckily, a coworker's wife works with skilled nursing facilities and gave me a couple options. I chose Maryville since it is located between my home and work. Upon visiting, the look and feel was the complete opposite of what we were experiencing. I spoke to Kalie Alonzo, the Admissions Director to get information. (I must add, it was after I had finished work and Kalie was getting ready to leave for the day. She made the time to speak to me without making me feel rushed.) After providing Maryville with my Mom's information, we were able to transfer her a couple days later. Everyone we interacted with was professional, courteous, caring, and knowledgeable about their duties. I was kept informed about my Mom's progress on a weekly basis. My Mom experienced an unrelated health issue (ulcer) where she needed to be taken to Emergency. After returning to Maryville, the staff picked up right where they left off. Mom was released about six weeks after her fall. Maryville continues to be involved with her after care, care. I haven't heard of many folks in their 90's recovering from broken hips/pelvic fractures. I honestly feel my Mom received THE BEST care available and is back at home all because of the hard work and efforts of the staff at Maryville.

The activity staff in the memory care have no tools, equipment, or supplies to do their job. This facility takes in a lot of money, but wont take care of their memory care residents.

Mary and Julie were very accommodating when I asked if we could have a family dinner welcoming my mom back to Portland from Arizona. The room was all set up and when I thought we were running out of food Julie made another dish for us. Also when I had delays with Medicare delivering my moms medical bed Mary allowed us to use one of the beds at the facility. I was immediately surprised at the building architecture and surroundings and upon entering my room, I was greeted by sunlight, clean, fresh, and a great room, kitchenette and bedroom, large roll in shower and bathroom. I was greeted by name and even one of the residents was holding me a place for lunch. The executive staff is very professional but warm and kind. The support staff is equally amenable. I have never had anyone be short with me upon a request. The activities director is amazing in the number of activities she organizes. If you are looking for a place for a family member or yourself, this facility is a nice size. Not too small, not too big. I would definitely return here in the future if necessary for my well being. One of my best friends just retired as an ombudsman for retirement centers. Oswego Place did not know who she was of course and she said to me "the atmosphere here is positive and welcoming."

Prior to coming to the Springs, her previous nursing home kept her heavily medicated, and she was not even able to function or communicate with us. Your different approach, which required more effort, attention, and true compassion woke her up for us, and even in the week before her passing, we were able to have loving conversations with her.
