Plain to see, on the front of their shop, is that sign. Surely the treasury aren't that desperate to reclaim the gold reserves that they so hastily shifted a few years back? (Ha ha) In any case, Grandma's 9ct gold earring aren't going to fetch much for your efforts. Other than asking for gold, Graham Jewellers also sells watches, cufflinks, passion beads and a range of women's jewellery. Their window seemed to cater mostly for men, since there was a huge range of men's watches and cuff links and more, on sale when I walked by. At the time that I was looking there was a sale on most of the watches, a lot were at half price, which meant that there was certainly a few really good deals. As for the ladies' jewellery, I was a little less inspired. There was a lot of shiny sparkly diamonds, amber jewellery items and again a few good offers, but I guess no one item special enough that really made me want to go in and enquire. It's worth stopping by for a browse but that's all I wanted - just a browse.

The jewellery is mainly quite understated and traditional, with gold and silver chains, earrings and rings, but there is also a variety if amber jewellery which is slightly more eye-catching with a chunkier bohemian feel. The large range of watches are again quite unassuming and traditional in style, with larger-faces and chunkier straps for men and daintier styles for women. The best place to browse their jewellery is at the window, as there isn't much more inside, only a small range, which personally I find less attractive than the bits and bobs in the window. Inside are the clocks and ornaments...the clocks again have a classic, timeless (haha!) look to them, not particularly stylish but not hideous either and I wasn't too keen on the ornaments...a bit Argos catalogue for my taste, but each to their own. This shop seems to appeal to someone who isn't looking for something particularly striking or unusual and may just want a watch or a clock that works or a simple piece of jewellery to accessorise an outfit...and for such wants it does the job fine...but for those looking for something with a unique look you might be disappointed.

They…read morealso sell watches, and browsing their watch collection, many nearing £3000 I can't help but wonder what on earth makes them so very expensive...to the untrained eye they really do just look like standard watches, many without the bling you'd expect at such a price tag...but maybe a brand name such as Bell & Ross, unfamiliar to the likes of me, is inculcated with some mysterious power to attract those with more money than sense. The mind truly boggles. The jewellery is a mixture of the theatrically blinging (despite being partial to a bit of costume jewellery myself I find most of this pretty unappealing), with rings clocking in at heady heights of around £6000 and more mundane understated drop earrings, still with a wopping price tag nearing £5000. I think I must just be destined to wander happily through life blissfully unaware of the intrinsic value of a few diamonds, as for some reason none of the jewellery on offer excites any reaction from me other than utter shock that anyone actually spend such money on such things. For engagement or wedding rings I can see why someone might justify spending a packet, but the range here merely resembles those found on the pages of the Argos catalogue...nothing really special.

Watches galore! An entire (est.) 3m window dedicated to mens watches with all the major brands - Cartier, Jaeger le Coultre, Omega and Rolex. Of the Rolexs that I noted, there were pre-owned Rolexs for a generous £1000 less than the brand new ones. Still, from glancing at all the options, the prices averaged between £1000-£3000 give or take. So I moved on to glance at more affordable gifts. Their jewellery items were much the same, very high end prices, but some lovely pieces. All the precious gem related jewellery - peridot, diamonds, emeralds, were lovely and very contemporary in style; the gems were cut in stark square formations and very simplistic. It was wonderful to have a look at their selections but unfortunately, for reasons of style and pauperdom, there was nothing for me here. Great if you happen to have a spare couple of grand.

With some of the super heavyweights cashing in their worth at the £5k mark it could be easy to be intimidated when stopping by for a nosey. Lucky for me I went in with a purpose, I was wedding ring hunting with a friend. So whilst she was sweating it out over the perfect band, I got to ogle the rest of the juicy gems. These are definitely not for the shy and demure type, they're big and brash and bold and they love it. They're not cheap to purchase, in fact they're rather expensive, and you know what they don't give a crap. They're worth it so finger snap to you. Everything is pretty gorgeous and beautifully crafted. The other forte of Berry's is their watch selection. Who doesn't like to drool over a lovely Rolex? Definitely catering to the higher end of the brand selection with powerhouses like Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Tag Heuer, Chanel, Dior, Rado. Oh the beauty. It's fun to window shop, or nicely laid out display shop, to actually shop, like take home these beauts shop, you'll need to have a healthy bank balance, because the watches, like the jewellery, run in to the several thousand pounds mark.

My favourite items are usually antique/vintage but generally, if it shines I'm interested. This shop, however, was a bit of a disappointment. I had a bit of a gaze at the window, almost at this point becoming disaffected, and so decided to venture in hoping for more interesting bits. There was no one there but the door let off this almighty buzz as I entered and then again as the door slammed shut. At this point a lady came rushing in and offered an obligatory "Hello, yes, how are you?" I told her I was fine, and really only having a browse. At this point she sighed and I went to look at their brooches. After a few seconds I heard this tapping - she was standing there, literally drumming her fingers on the counter as I browsed. I did not appreciate that, and began to feel uncomfortable - like I was some kind of unwanted burden. At this point I turned to leave, trying to avoid her awkward stare, and nearly tripped over a huge cardboard box that was next to the counter. I thanked her and left - there was only one brooch I liked anyway and none of them had visible prices. All in all, a bit of a let down, and I don't think I'll be back.

My experience wasn't that bad - I wouldn't say I was welcomed with open arms but I didn't feel the immediate urge to leave. The jewellery here is, well, pretty average. Like Rowena I'm into vintage or antique jewellery but generally like anything with a bit of character and unusual or interesting design. The jewellery at Oakwood consists mainly of gold and silver chains and a variety of rings, which were ok but none really caught my eye. There was a very pretty pearl necklace in t he window, and a few broaches that looked promising but on closer inspection I didn't really feel that there was anything very special. They also sell a selection of watches and a large range of clocks of the sort you'd imagine sat on a mantelpiece, many with glass domes and brass detailing. If you like quite traditional, unassuming jewellery or clocks and watches of a classic, understated design then you may well find something here to suit your taste but if you're looking for an unusual piece that will stand out you may be disappointed.
