Washington University in St Louis - WashU Swim Class of 2025

I visited this campus in June 2023 as part of an exploration of Forest Park (which is right across…read morethe street). The architecture is pretty and the campus includes a nice art museum that's worth a short visit. During the summer, it was relatively quiet on campus, but it was easy to visualize a busy place in the fall semester. Did not see many places to eat or shop - but maybe that was on the opposite side of campus (away from Forest Park).

Writing my 1,000 Yelp review for my alma mater - Washington University in St. Louis! What a crazy…read moremoment having only graduated a few years ago. When I asked my friends how many stars they would give WashU, it ranged everything from 1 star to 5 stars, but many of them noted to me that whatever I gave our school, I needed it be just based off of the experience at the school not what I can personally bring into the experience. Having gone to college here both pre- and post-Covid, I would say that WashU has really changed but I regardless would still give it 5 stars because I couldn't be where I am without this amazing schools. Here's some of the reasons why WashU deserves 5 stars, not necessarily in the order of importance. Also, definitely not an exhaustive list of things that i love about WashU, but just to name a few... - The range of clubs, organization, classes, etc. to take on this campus is honestly wild. You could explore your interest in a very in-depth way and also develop interests that you had no idea about. I've taken some incredibly interesting classes and have joined clubs that I didn't know I had an interest about. - The campus is beautiful! So many amazing places to study and hang out whether that's hammocking in the trees or being tucked in a secret study corner in the DUC. There's always a new place to explore on campus! - I appreciate how there's always something going on, on campus. Every week there's so many talks whether that's from the professors themselves or people that the campus hired from outside and so many activities and festival and performances to enjoy. You really couldn't get bored on campus. - I appreciate the caliber of people I have met at WashU. Not only is everyone extremely smart, but everyone always has some side interest or hobbies that make them incredibly talented people who I would love to be friends with. And everyone is excited and open to share with you what they are passionate about as well! - POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY - This class is actually incredible. The course is about how to become happier, not happy... happier, and it provides a lot of scientific-backed ideas and ways of thinking to go about it. This class, especially if you take it your senior year, is so relevant to the ways we build healthier and happier habits in our lives. I simply couldn't recommend it more. However, there are also many reasons how WashU could improve: - The tuition increases are not ideal. I understand why schools do this to account for inflation, etc., but especially during Covid when everything was online, it felt weird to have a tuition increase for a subpar experience. - The dining food before and after Covid was massively different. For example, Ibbis used to have all you can eat lunch every day of the week but after Covid they decided to have a set menu that barely changes. Also, the quality of the food also dropped while the prices rose dramatically. - I do not appreciate that you don't have the option to be a part-time student if you take less than 8 semesters. Sometimes, especially in your senior year, you just don't have that many classes to take and would like to still be at WashU but not pay $70k to be there. I think there needs to be more flexibility on the definition of being a student. - Like every campus, WashU can be gate-keeping on the types of people who are selected for certain activities. Especially in your freshman year, its hard getting rejected to every club you ever applied to. WashU needs to have a more open door policy especially on the student-run organization level as many of these clubs are run by students who not necessarily have leadership experience or rather had examples of what good leadership could look like. - There could be more robust entrepreneurship culture at WashU. Especially a school with this caliber, entrepreneurship is not as integrated into student life as I would have liked. I think having ideas that corporate isn't the only path to take would be nice to have known earlier on and then it would simultaneously be incorporated through the startup alumni network. I am so grateful to have gone to WashU and I would make the same decision over and over again.

Well, this is my Alma Mater. A graduate of 2004. So, I am a little bias. My review will not focus…read morethe curriculum but will provide the benefits of taking a few hours to enjoy this lovely campus. Concordia is tucked back in the Clayton neighborhood and sits behind the former CBC, turned Concordia Seminary, turned Washington University building that sits on the corner across from St. Mary's Hospital. I've met some people who have lived in the area and didn't know the place even existed because it really nestled in the community. The campus is gorgeous with little courtyards and smaller grassy knolls, which offers a lovely areas for quiet contemplation and mediation. You may bump into an eager seminary student who is quick to offer the "saving message", but don't worry they don't bite. The chapel is lovely and offers a traditional church setting with large clear windows, a minimalist altar and cross that is breathtaking, and a gorgeous organ. If architecture is your thing than do not pass up the gothic german stylings with slate roofs that probably costs more than the newer airport expansion. If mid-70's history is your thing than you can see the areas where the infamous "Walk Out" took place making national news. The library offers anything and everything relating to history, religion, and philosophy and is hailed as one of the top 10 theological libraries in the nation and highly regarded in the world. I doubt you will find a "Choose Your Own" adventure but you will find something in Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Sanskrit, and other various languages. There is also something in the language of "Veggie Tales" in the DVD area. Lastly, make sure you book a tour and can hit the bell tower and the original smaller chapel where a failed exorcism led to a young boy to be exorcised by the local Roman Catholic priests. The story was properly documented in a nonfiction book by Father Malachi Martin, a fictional book by William Blatty and later a movie called "The Exorcist", perhaps you've heard of this little film? The sequel sucked. If you are interested in learning about theology then I suggest going to iTunes University, as there are many lectures for free. This seminary was one of the first seminaries to be approved by Apple and to use this outlet to serve the public. However, you do miss out on those nice seminary students.

I have stopped in a few times when I was working late on Sundays in lab. The community is very welcoming and there is always great music. Father Gary does a nice job with his homilies. In particularly I would like to point out their 9pm mass is a life saver some times when your days fill up.

Oh ye, disgrunted Catholics, I feel your pain too well…read more When you were a kid, you went to church. You didn't want to, and you weren't quite sure why (especially since some weeks your parents left angrier than before), but you went. Maybe not every week, but most weeks. Your mind was a little sponge, so it soaked up all the repetitions of Catholic Mass, week after week, for years. For a while it seemed you could do a better job than the priest. Sure you didn't really comprehend what was being said, or think about it all that much, and those homilies read from a pre-written script seemed boring and unrelatable, but you put up with it. Maybe because your parents threatened you with discipline, but probably because you got to do something fun afterwards and you didn't want to spoil it. But then something happened. Puberty. Church went from being boring to sucking, big time. What's that old man have to tell me about my life? There's no way anyone here could feel how I feel. The Catholic Church isn't exactly built for teenagers. Repetitions, hymns, conservative thought...the perfect mix to rebel against. So for one reason or another, you stopped going. Sure, sometimes you'd go with your family on Christmas or Easter just to shut them up, but now mass was something to be suffered through, a constant reminder of how you just wanted to break free of everything you grew up around. It was time to branch out, to try other things, be someone different. Flash forward to current day. You're older, you're wiser, you're done with your rebellion stage. You've thought about giving church another shot, but you don't know where to start. Your mind keeps going back to those boring days at church with the priest reading off of a piece of paper that he didn't even write. You still remember all the songs and responses, but you don't want it to be an empty vessel. You need spiritual guidance, and you need to feel connected to what is happening and the people around you. Well my friend, do I have a place for you. The Catholic Student Center at Washington University. What's that? You're not a student? You didn't even go to Wash U? Well, I won't tell anyone if you don't :) But seriously, having a formal connection to the university is NOT a requirement for attending. Yes, the chapel was built for Wash U students, and is located on the campus, but the church is welcoming to people of all faiths, backgrounds, and ages. When it is all said and done, it is another parish in the vast spider web of the St. Louis Archdiocese. When I was going through a period of discernment in my 20's, I lived in south city. There were Catholic churches as far as the eye could see. So I tried them all out, at least a dozen, maybe more. A couple of them stuck for a little while, but ultimately left me feeling empty. So I decided to look at churches connected to colleges or universities. SLU was the obvious choice, but Wash U was closest to me, so I tried that out first. I never made it to SLU. I found spiritual fulfillment and a place where I belong at the CSC, and I recognized it instantly. This is a place where people go out of their way to make you feel connected. It's easy to make new friends, and the atmosphere is one where there is a sense of action. Things are always happening. Events are being planned, students are going on service trips, speakers are coming in to talk. The priest, Father Gary Braun, is not just a good priest, he is a good person. The Catholic Church is blessed that he chose the ministry instead of any number of other vocations, and there have been many occasions where I feel his homilies have saved my spiritual life. The CSC is always welcoming, but focuses on the students. In fact, many of the non-students who attend do so because of the CSC's reputation of being open to all people and taking faith seriously. The first time I attended, I questioned whether I was visiting an actual Catholic church. What's this, people interacting with each other??? Uptempo songs??? A priest talking to you as though you're a real person??? Some of the best people I've met in my adult life have been through the CSC. These are good hearted people with an open mind, who found at the CSC what they couldn't find at any other parish. It's importance to the Catholic community cannot be overstated, and I am forever grateful that I found it at the time I did. I still attend Mass on a weekly basis, and it's almost always filled with people, sometimes spilling outside the chapel. The space has recently been renovated and looks and feels like an actual chapel now, with all the layout and accoutrements you'd expect for a church associated with a high dollar university. But none of that really matters to me. They could hold Mass in a refrigerator box and I'd still attend. If you're lost spiritually, give the CSC a chance. It just might save your soul.

They never want to help you even when your asking a simple question they treat you like trash for even asking... Teachers continually hit on people half their own age, and the creepy ass things the staff say and do half the time... The supply store sucks and is too high price, of course some classes give you what you need but most of the time your going to need supplies for class, good luck unless you brought your own your better off buying supplies from an actual store... Please don't go to this college, these were the worst four years of my life, there are way better colleges to go to trust me.
