In order to enter inside of the Washington Monument, you do need to have a ticket. While they offer free same-day tickets on site, I highly suggest reserving a ticket online. The reservation fee is only $1.00 per ticket. There are no restrooms within the monument however there are restrooms at the Washington Monument Lodge right in front. They do ask you to arrive 30 minutes before your tour time. There are also plenty of benches surrounding the monument in case you need to wait. When you enter, there is a security screening and metal detectors. To get to the observation deck you need to take the elevator and you are left to explore on your own. They also have a museum right under the observation deck. Parking is extremely limited so prepare ahead of time. read more

You get to see all 4 monuments that surround it including the White House. Just a quick tip, you need to get the tickets the day of at the visit center window they open the window at exactly 8:45am. We miss it the first morning so we have to try the next day. Again another wonderful experience and for free come on, why can other cities do this.? read more

We weren't able to snag tickets to go inside & tour the Washington Monument. The con construction of the 555 ft. presidential memorial began in 1848. It was suspended from 1854 to 1877 due money and the Civil War. The stone structure was completed in 1884 & the 2 colored stone mark is visible. Price... 10/10 Experience... 10/10 Trying to get tickets 3/10 The views from the top of the monument cannot be missed. You have a panoramic view of our nation's capital. The top of the monument is equipped with 3D models of each site, and you know exactly what you're looking at. The trip up to the top is even filled with history and the elevator will slow for you to look at all the various donated stones. The only downside on the process for getting tickets. Do not add this to your itinerary on purpose. Be ready for someone with a Recreation.gov account to be up early on vacation to get tickets. They are EXTREMELY limited. Be ready to be flexible for your date and time. But the trip is 100% worth it. read more

Standing at a height of 555 feet, the Washington Monument was once deemed the tallest building in the world. That may have been years ago, but is still an amazing feat! Get tickets (timed-entry passes) online in advance to secure a timeslot to ride all the way to the observation deck. Once we arrived, we were directed to wait at the seating area outside the monument. One of the rangers reiterated what items are allowed and prohibited from being taken inside (you can take sealed water), and then he guided us over to the entrance. After a thorough but quick security scan, we lined up by the elevator where a guide provided an introduction, referencing the statue of George Washington behind us. After all, this monument is dedicated to him! A short ride up the elevator brought us to the observation deck which is fully enclosed as the lookout points are fully covered by glass. Above each window is a visual of the landmarks that you should be able to pinpoint. In particular, I loved the views of the Capitol Building and the Tidal Basin. Once on the observation deck, there is no time limit for the amount of time one can stay up there, but it gets pretty tight as more people make their way to the top. Visiting each of the four sides will provide you with the full 360-degree view and there are two windows on each side which helps decrease the crowding. Unfortunately, the windows at each lookout point are not super clean, so photos may turn out a little hazy. If anything, this might be a sign to just enjoy the views in the moment! Head one floor down the stairs to an exhibit where you can read more about the monument's history. It was interesting to learn about how the structure was built and to realize that there are 194 memorial stones embedded into the marble walls. While descending down the elevator, you can actually catch a quick glimpse of them! Definitely make this a stop in your visit to the National Mall to get a bird's-eye view of the city! read more

I would recommend definitely getting tickets in advanced as they sell out early the day of (just like a $1 processing fee). Then it's waiting in your timeslot line, going through security, then up and up and up the elevator. Because this is such an iconic building, I'm glad I did it, but it was packed, and the viewing windows are pretty small. You can see some other iconic buildings in each direction though. A floor down, there is an exhibit on the building of the monument, so that's worth a look through. All and all from base up and back down again, looking out the windows and seeing the exhibit is like 15 minutes of time, and it is very crowded. There is just the one elevator going up and down. But for the building significance - if you're in town for a few days or it's not your first trip, it's a good thing to cross off the DC checklist. read more

Definitely one of the first things you'll see when arriving in DC. You'll see countless tourists taking pictures like they're "pushing" the monument. The monument itself was constructed to give reverence to George Washington, our nation's first president. The Washington Monument stands at 555 feet and can be seen from afar. Only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the ticket system is awful for anyone that wants to go up. Yes, it's $1 but it's too difficult to reserve tickets a day or two before. I logged on exactly at 10 am 24 hrs before the day I wanted to go up, the system crashed. I had 2 tickets in my cart one moment, the next moment it's all sold out. I would be happy if they set the price to like $3-4, at least it'll give people a chance to see it. It doesn't help that the big tour groups take a majority of those tickets. read more

Tickets go by quick. We tried repeatedly online day of. Always sold out within minutes. Asked about tickets in person. Staff told us to get in line at 7:30am. That was over an hour before 8:45 ticket opening. When we arrived, there were already 35 people ahead of us. Thankfully we got our tickets at the desired time, 9:00am. By the time we were at security, tickets were all given out at 9:05. Views from the top are amazing. Clear view of the entire area. Local monuments are in clear view. Each of the four sides has two viewing windows. Half with steps for the little ones. In total we spent about 45minutes total including security and entrance line. You can't go to Washington D.C. and not visit the Washington Monument - this is one of the quintessential stops of anyone's trip. Pictures do not do this monument ANY justice, and there is no replacement for seeing it in person. It is 100% awe-inducing, and you will want to stay longer than you had planned. Great and plentiful grassy areas around it to sit and enjoy. Our best experience with the monument, though, was the tour inside the monument. I wasn't even aware you could go inside until we got to D.C. Some tickets are available in advance, but we didn't do this option so I'm not familiar with it. However, there are relatively very few tickets available otherwise, and they go live the day before at 10AM. So if you, like me, show up in D.C. and are trying to get tickets then, set your alarm and get your fingers ready to swoop some of the limited tickets. Tickets are only $1/person, so affordable for everyone! Going inside is incredible. Just going in the elevator inside is a trip - you will get to see different states' stones that were contributed to the monument. Once at the top, there's a small museum to enjoy as well as some incredible views of the National Mall. It is such a cool experience to stand inside this historical monument as see some incredible views. Hands down, if you only have limited time in D.C., this is one of the stops you must make to get a full feel for all that D.C. brings to our cultural history. read more

Tony and I celebrated his 61st birthday by going to Washington DC. One of the many memorials we visited was the Washington Monument. Tony and I walked 12 miles this particular Saturday as we toured around the city on foot. The Monument was very busy and since it was free to enjoy the line was 3 hours long.....so we decided not to fight the crowd and stand in line. A quintessential tourist stop when visiting DC. I personally was much more excited to see the Washington Monument than I was to glimpse the White House, and it was all the amazingly tall gloriousness that I expected it be. The walk up is nice, longer than you would think until you get close enough to realize how massive this monument is and how it absolutely warrants a long walkway up. It's clean and well kept (as it should be), and I took some gorgeous pics on this sunny winter day. I can't speak to the gift shop, I didn't set foot in it but I'm not really that person who buys something from everything I go, if you know what I mean. A vacation to DC wouldn't be complete without going up to the top of the Washington Monument. Reservations are available online 30-days prior to your planned visit, however the tickets weren't available when I tried to book them (late March/peak season during the Cherry Blossom Festival). Another option is to book tickets online 24 hours before your planned visit, but again no luck. Third option: same day visit tickets. So, our family got up EARLY to line up at the ticket counter (~7:15 am!) hoping to get 9:00 am tickets (1st time slot). There was already a line when we arrived. We were probably ~20th to 30th person/party in line. There are restrooms available in the same building where the ticket counter is located. The (free) tickets were distributed at 8:45 am (ticket counter opening time) and we secured our tickets (limit 6 per person age 16+) :). Tip: for a 9:00 am time, have another member of your party stand in line at the monument ready to go to avoid additional waiting time (while 1 member secures the tickets). We were the first group to go up the monument for the day (9:00 am). I think it was a limit of 10 persons going through security and up the elevator at a time. Minus 1 on my rating because we not able to see some of the commemorative stones on our elevator descent down (ranger told us the windows weren't functioning that day?). Plan on visiting this monument earlier during your vacation (especially during peak season) or else you may not be able to secure tickets if you wait too late. Also, there was The Blossom Kite Festival (at the Monument) during our visit, so make sure also check this event out if you visit during March. Enjoy! read more

This place was not what I had expected. It was so much better! I struggled to get timed tickets but read you can buy the "group" options which was easy to secure online. We joined a group of 40 strangers and spent an hour inside, viewing the world from above, learning about the structural ingenuity of how it came to be, and the history made when it was being built and finally finished. It takes seconds to get to the top but what was cool and very surprising was the ride back down. The elevator periodically slows so you can view the individual stones gifted to the project from each state. If you're in DC, this should definitely be on your list! read more

This may be my last Yelp review. I am retiring my Yelp.com account. Most places get a max of 2000 reviews on this USA centric website. I was probably creating a log and journal that was supposed to be private. It's better to be professional than leave these notes on the internet. Who is gonna get in trouble for that? I went back to Washington DC this last week. I was 39 years old. I finally made it back to the National Mall and saw the monuments. I got a ticket from the tour group guide to visit the top of the Washington National monument. It was an astounding view on a sunny Spring day. There's a museum with info. There's a view with outlook over the lawn and grid. It's similar to Rome tower, Eiffel tower..mostly Paris and Rome towers. I have seen those. It's significant in Washington DC and I am happy went up to the peak for the first time. The tour guide handed out the passes. read more

What can be said about the Washington Monument at this point that hasn't already been said a million times? It is honestly one of the first images that comes to mind when one mentions Washington DC and the National Mall to me. Standing at nearly 555 feet tall, it is the world's tallest obelisk in addition to being the world's tallest predominately stone structure! Another interesting tidbit: There is a change in tone in the stone due to the fact that construction started in 1848 but was stopped in 1854 when donations ran out. Construction picked back up nearly 25 years later when interest in the Monument picked back up after the Civil War ended. The only thing that I didn't enjoy about the Monument is the process of getting tickets to go to the top. If you plan your vacation less than 30 days in advance, you pretty much need to get in line at the Monument at 8 am when they release a limited number of tickets. That option didn't sound especially appealing to me, so I didn't go. lol They also release a limited number of tickets online for the next day, but they went ridiculously fast every time I checked in. Luckily, I took the wobbly elevator ride up when I was a kid way back in the early 80's, but I would have loved to have gone back up again this time as well. If you are going with at least 30 days' notice, definitely lock up those tickets sooner than later! Those views are fantastic and it is well worth the ride to the top! All that aside, the Washington Monument is classic and timeless piece of the Washington DC landscape! 4 stars. read more

First off, yes its worth the visit for the best views of DC!!! The only issue I have is that the military should be allowed to walk up and go in anytime. I dont need to explain why and how come.... It's been shut down for some years due to various reasons thu out the yrs. You will have to reserve tix way in advance, good luck with this. I got lucky while I was in town and got one ticket for the day and time needed!!! Screaming from the roof tops God I thank you for this perfecto beautiful day that was granted to me!!! My whole road trip this fall from Columbia SC to Rhode Island was a blessing. I will not bore you will how tall, etc., that's part of the individual history lesson. All that aside, the Washington Monument is a timeless piece of landscape in the DC area, dont miss it! Tip: They only let a few people in at a time and again try to reserve well in advance and keep trying the day of, at 7am daily they give away free tix at the monument, you can get up to 6 tix at a time. The whole adventure was a history lesson in itself. Make sure you take your children to DC at least once in a lifetime, almost everything has free entry. Yes you will pay dearly for hotels, parking and food. Its more expensive to travel in the USA that abroad.
