Simply amazing! I am in awe when I stand in front of this monument. I participated in an evening photography workshop. Our meeting place was just at the nearby amphitheater. The weather was gorgeous and the natural lighting made these photos possible. I am proud to be able to see this monument every time I drive and walk into the city. read more

Beautiful. Powerful. Atop a hill, overlooking the city and the pool of reflection. The tallest obelisk in the USA says a whole lot more than, "Climb to the top and look out." It is the inner-shore Statue of Liberty, and it cries out for the marginalized. read more

A little underwhelming but definitely worth visiting. It's magnificent and tall and good place for some photos. I wouldn't recommend paying/waiting to get to the top. It's also a lot nicer in the day than at night. Treat it as your North Star as you try to find your way to the National Mall. read more

How can you not give something like this 5 stars?! I mean, it's a sight that everyone should witness at least once in their life and has such a rich history. Whether or not you believe in the current political climate, it's still important to know the history of our country. I digress... Few fun facts for ya. The structure was completed in 1888, and you'll notice that the stone is two different shades of color. The construction was halted due to a lack of funding; when construction started again they used marble from a different quarry. You'll notice that as you're approaching the monument. The best way to check this place out is via bike. Rent some of the city bikes and make your way to the base so you can take it all in. It's a must stop for any visit to D.C. read more

I think it is imperative for Americans to travel overseas so that we can better understand other cultures. That being said, it is very important to take the time to travel across our great nation. One of those critical stops must be D.C. and all of the monuments. Unfortunately, during my visit the Monument was roped off due to the recent earthquake. read more

On the tour of our great nation we spent the day in DC which was the first time we had been to the city. As part of our trip to the area we made it a point to walk up to the Washington Monument because it is such an incredible landmark. The monument itself is massive and we didn't want to wait in line for a tour, so we just walked around the exterior of the building. The views from the moment were breathtaking and it was great that we were able to walk up to it and we were able to touch it. In the end, this was a great stop while on our tour of Washington DC. We think that everyone should have the chance to visit this city and especially this monument once in their lifetime. read more

I was actually in Virgina but decided it wasn't too far away so I jumped in my HHR and took the drive... I thought Atlanta parking was bad! Nothing compared to the parking in DC. Being from out of state not knowing where to park, or what streets to go down to get to the monument and back to the car was crazy! I actually really enjoyed this trip. This is something that I've always wanted to see. I think it was amazing to see, from afar and up close. You can actually see it from the interstate and I nearly had a car accident. Up close it is even more breath taking. I plan on taking a trip to Washington D.C again for the site seeing. read more

You can see it from just about anywhere in the DC area! I think when most people think of DC the washington monument comes to mind because you always see it depicted in movies and photos. Even foreigners know "the sharp pointy thing" It gets windy up here so be sure to bring a jacket. Really pretty at night as well. Wish I could go up though but after the earthquakes and everything I think they've stopped letting people go. You can't come to DC and not stop by to see it! read more

No fuss-no muss. This is how a tourist attraction should run! Get your tickets beforehand and show up at that time. We were in line 10 mins. before our "ticket time" and within minutes we were zooming up the elevator to the top. Once you've looked out every window at the top; you line up for the elevator and head back down. My favorite part was stopping on the elevator to see the stone engravings on the inside of the monument. Very cool read more

A beautiful landmark in DC. The monument is lovely with spacious grounds surrounding the grounds. Lots of kite-flying. I did see some soccer balls being kicked around and some lunches being eaten on the grounds. I think as long as you are not interrupting others, you are okay. The Obelisk of Wokeness, than you Republican Sen. Tom Cotton. A true symbol of our democracy.

This iconic structure, reaching up to the heavens, can be seen from the entire downtown DC area. A constant reminder of those who came before us and all that they have done for our country and people. Approaching the monument, I was in awe at it's grandeur. It is breathtaking; so clean, simple and understated. Unfortunately, following 9/11 an unsightly metal box was attached to the monument to serve as a security screening area for tour participants. I completely understand the need for it, but it definitely detracts from the monument. The monument is currently closed due to damage from the August earthquake that hit the DC area. It is roped off and no tours are being conducted. Security guards are present to keep visitors out of the roped off area and answer questions about the monument closure. They were happy to show us photos of the damage and answer any questions we had. read more

I can't get enough of this monument. It is absolutely beautiful. If you get a chance to see it lit up on a clear night you should take it!!! There are many options for creative photos as well. Can't really say anything about the upstairs view, tours, or tour guides. The monument always makes for interesting pictures and poses with it looking like it's protruding from various bodily areas. It's a beautiful place to relax during the day. It's like a walk in the park. It's also great to walk by during the evening when it's all lit up. Wow, the Washington Monument is truly beautiful and it is definitely not something you can miss seeing while in D.C. as you will literally drive past it many times while going to different museums or government buildings. If you plan on visiting D.C. make sure you visit the Washington Monument at least once during the day and once at night, as the mood is completely different. I enjoyed it a lot during the night as it is very peaceful and the air is cooler, but the lights that illuminate on it makes it look so beautiful. At night time a lot of people just hangout here taking pictures and laying on the benches, it is a very relaxing place to just hangout. Before we came here, I did not realize how big the Monument was (555 feet tall), each and every piece of marble/gneiss/granite stone is massive in size. Sadly the Washington Monument is closed due to the 2011 Virginia earthquake that damaged the elevator, so it will not be reopened until sometime in 2019. Interesting fact, did you know in 1884 the Washington Monument was once the tallest building in the world? However in 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was finished in Paris it then became the tallest. Completely awe inspiring and an ever-present part of the DC skyline. The historical and monumental significance makes it worth a visit. But now is not the time to do much more than view from afar. It is closed. I wish I checked Yelp or the other sites before walking over... and getting stymied by sidewalks that are closed but with no prior warning. Okay, I was tired and it was hot. I must have been quite grumpy but I really didn't appreciate walking to the south only to have to turn around and walk the other way. I understand that repair is needed and construction crews need space. But how about a sign or cone or anything? read more

OVERHYPED!!! TOO TALL!!! NEEDS TO BE MODERNIZED!!! Very disappointing, the marble was MISMATCHED. I would think that for such a prestigious president, they could have at least gotten enough high quality marble, that actually matched. I physically hurt my neck craning it to look at the monument. Could they not have made it shorter?!?!?!?! As a 5'7" female, I felt ostracized standing next to it. It was quite intimidating. If you have kids, AVOID AVOID AVOID. They will lose self confidence, and grow up terrified of the world. I hope you all also understand the effort that I went to to get a photo of the entire monument. The struggle is real. I felt victimized, and scared, and I feel like I need a refund. I expected better service at such a hyped up establishment. I am currently bawling, and will never visit DC again due to this horrible, HORRIBLE, experience. SMH. Do better DC, and stop allowing this to happen. read more

Pretty neat, but presently shut down for repairs. Kind of boring, in relation to the others.

News teaser: I picked up a couple of guys while I was touring the monument. [Don't jump ahead - I'll explain.] Earlier, I had travelled to Jefferson's Monticello, the Gettysburg Civil War battleground, and to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis as part of my barnstorming on the East Coast portion of my trip. Having returned to the city for the last leg, I wanted to check the Washington Monument (WashiMon) since I'd never visited it on any prior trip. Queuing up to the ticket window, the next available tour (free) would be at 130 PM. Since I had 2 hours to kill, I ambled over to the Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial to check those virgin places out too. Mini-reviews of them respectively: Excellent, boring dud, excellent. Lining up for the tour, I met two guys in line who were also tourists and were a couple from the Midwest. We fell into an easy camaraderie as we went through the security screen, up the elevator, and checked out the four observation deck windows. The views were amazing and the storyboards about the history and renovation of the WashiMon were fascinating. On the way down, the park ranger slowed the car down so that we could check out some of the blocks sent by states to represent them. Impressive: Alaska's huge block of jade. Tacky: Florida's "space age" block of plastic. [I kid you not.] Of the two rangers, the down elevator one had the more exciting spiel - I just hope they got to trade spots at some point to keep everyone happy. Once done with the tour, I let it slip that I was going to walk about 15 minutes up the street past the State Department [Hi, Hillary!], catch a city bus, and tour the National Cathedral and its observation deck. I don't know if it was a Midwestern thing, a gay thing, or gay Midwest thing but they jumped at the chance and we were off to see it together. Little did I know that this would turn into a full afternoon and sharing dinner with new found friends, too. But, I appreciated the company since traveling for 4 days solo can get really old, especially at meal time. Moral of the story: Tour a fantastic monument and you just may pick up new friends. See? It wasn't a tawdry story - that's the "tease" part of the intro line. Though, my mother was concerned that I was befriending total strangers when I told her afterwards. read more

#392-2016: What an iconic monument this is!! Many of you may remember it as backdrop to a key scebe of "Forrest Gump", others will remember black and white pictures taken from being Dr. King to show the huge amount of people gathered for his famous "I have a dream" speech... and, many of you (just like I did) just have to recollect their personal experience from their memories. This is what I am doing now. I have walked by it at night and during the day, I have seen it from afar as well as so close I had to almost bend my neck backwards. What a beauty! It was built to commemorate the first commander-in-chief of the continental army (and, subsequently, the first American President) and it is by far he tallest stone structure in the world. It was was built with marble and granite. The building of this monument was not without a glitch, it was started in 1848, but halted a few years later due to lack of funds. It was not finished until 1888, and it has since been available to the public to admire. It suffered some critical damage during the 2011 earthquake and the hurricane Irene but has been repaired since and can still be gazed upon by countless admirers, both local and from put of town. If you are ever in D.C. you owe it to yourself to cine visit such an iconic place. I personally try and see it as often as I can whilst I am in D.C. read more

44 days of night... so have you ever asked yourself how anyone ever falls asleep without drinking? that's when the mental carnival starts! oh wait thats not the question i was going to ask. i was going to ask you ever been lost? and no matter how lost you are you still see the same landmark? in atlanta it was the giant chicken. in dc it's this giant penis looking thing. wait hold up --- -- got a call. ok its called the washington monument. i drove circles around this thing for an hour. i saw on the events page a yelp event somewhere in dc. now it would be too easy for me to just find it right? oh boy internet maps such as mapquest and google are good for big directions like how to get from one state or city to another. small streets? eh not so good. i was close by in camp springs md. i left to dc at 9. drove around til 10:30 haha and still couldn't find this damn yelp event. this is when calling a friend beats having internet maps. but i don't know anyone here. argh. but i left my camera back at my hotel so i wouldn't have had any evidence of meeting yelpers anyhow haha. this is when my belief things all work out in the end kicks in. and this monument, was my only dc friend haha. i drove around it umpteen times. whats umpteen? i dunno but i took a bazillion pics of it with my camera phone. if i knew the city better, i could use these landmarks to triangulate my location. i am advanced in many things and many disciplines, but in dc driving i am a beginner. street names are all funky, theres some kind of grid and perimeter and letters like f and u. ah dc i have fond memories. and monument, you are alright. great things have happened here, speeches, proposals, inspiration, forrest gump, and sam y getting lost in his nation wide yelp tour. ahhh thanks for the memories. america. fuck yeah. oh and why are there so many cops in dc, md, virgin-a? trying to bust me? the jim beam is for my dad! http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/HVw66Pb-JYQaLbL-9yNUtg/l read more

This is a place you must visit when you come to DC. You've seen it a zillion times on TV and movies but it's still amazing to see it in person. It's bigger than you expect and on sunny days the marble is blindingly white. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five is because it's closed for repairs right now so nobody can go inside. My friend told me the view from inside the top is amazing. Plus it's a wonderful symbol but doesn't really teach you anything about George Washington. The Lincoln and Jefferson memorials have statues of the presidents and their most famous quotations, but here there's nothing with historical background. There's a ring of flags around the monument so that's nice to see too. It's on a grassy hill that's good for a picnic. You can bring your own lunch or get food from all the lunch trucks on the streets next to the Mall. read more

The Washington Monument is easy to spot from many places within DC. Going up it is a bit harder. Plan in advance and get tickets early. They sell out regularly. There are limits to the numbers and hours you can ride up the monument. Also, if it is hot, plan to stand in the sun...without any shade. Bring water because it was hella HOT when we were there July 4 weekend. Tip: step into the tiny gift store which has air conditioning if you must get out of the heat for a few minutes. Unfortunately, they don't sell water there. Even if you don't go up to the observation deck, just come to take some cool pics as the monument is surrounded by a ring of American flags. Is a ride to the top worth the price, the line, and the heat? Probably not. Is the Washington Monument a fitting iconic tribute to a leader who meant so much to America? Undoubtedly. read more
