The Washington Memorial is dedicated to the 1st President of the United States and is the premiere iconic landmark in Washington DC. I suppose the memorial is an obelisk and means #1, being that Washington was the first head of state ever.
I didn't know that there was an elevator inside the Washington monument. Then again, I remember walking up a lot of stairs inside the Statue of Liberty statue in New York City on a previous trip. With that said, my friend and I arrived at the Washington memorial on a brisk Friday morning in late January 2023 around 11am. It was a little bit cold out but not terrible, especially for January. It was cool to see the memorial standing proudly, watching over the city and seeing progress made over the decades its been here. I took some selfies with the monument first before heading in to see it up close. It was a windy day and you can hear the US Flags flapping away against the wind. We were turned away because we forgot to book our elevator tickets ahead of time. So lesson learned, book your elevator tickets ahead of time ahead of arrival. The National Park Service lady told us there's only a daily allotment that they can take up on any given day, so if you aren't reserving the tickets, you can't get to go up. I was dismayed, but still, it was pretty cool to see the Washington monument anyway. Although I could see photos of the Washington DC skyline from the monument itself, it doesn't beat actually being there. There's always next time, but for at least this trip, I got to see the outside and create memories.
The overall experience here at the Washington Memorial here in Washington DC was pretty cool. It was patriotic and inspiring. It is one of Washington DC's popular tourist attractions and one of the most poignant ones too, telling visitors and locals alike of the history of the United States in its infancy of nation building and declaring independence from the British crown. The memorial itself is as simple as it can be. During my experience at the Washington Memorial, I basically admired the great man and looked at the memorial with a bit of hope and a little bit of sadness. Our democracy continues to be a shining beacon of hope around the world, but with the countless hard work and sacrifices of our citizenry. The entire structure was a massive undertaking and you definitely one to walk laps around it until you can get the sense of the enormity of the size, even though it is a simple obelisk. It gave me some pause before helping me realize that, as mentioned above, how lucky we are living in the United States of America. While we do have our issues and problems, it's one of the better places to reside in the world today. Definitely recommended if you are here for vacation and wanting to see the touristy things Washington DC has to offer. It's an educational and an enriching experience, not to mention amazing as well. You would feel inspired here, no doubt.
The Washington Memorial in Washington DC is centrally located near the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. While there is no admission fee associated with the monument itself, the distribution of timed entry tickets are distributed at 8:45am daily. I totally missed out on this and should have known better. The memorial is open 24/7 and 365 days a year, including when I was there in the winter month of January. Best bet would be to spend time here during the work week in the morning times and grab those free timed tickets. You can book online but they have a $1 fee attached to that. There's street parking nearby and if you are like me, the metro and or local bus service can take you here. I think there's also the Hop On Hop Off Bus tourists use as well to take you around Washington DC and it takes you here to the Lincoln Memorial too. If you love Uber and/or Lyft, they can be of service to you too. However you get here, its one of those memorials that is iconic and represents Washington DC well. For the most part though, my experience was as quiet and peaceful, since i was there before the tourist crowds showed up.
5.0 stars for the overall experience. Don't be like me. Get there early and go up on the elevator.
