Karczma Polish Restaurant - Zurek - potato and sausage soup in a bread bowl

A fun experience. I've visited three times now and always had a good time…read more The Karczma is in the Polish millenial centre but has its own entrance. You can find it by turning left under the bridge behind Moor St station and then taking the second road on the right. Inside you will find a cosy restaurant with a straw ceiling, wooden tables with crochet tablecloths and other traditional polish decorations. It's quite cheesy but effective. Food is hearty and trsditional, probably not much for vegetarians. We had a sharing trough for 6-8 people last time so I've tried a great deal now. The dumplings are delicious, as is the stuffed chicken. Sides of sourkraut, beetroot and potato are super too. It isn't refined cooking but it is good, hearty and fun. They have a great vodka selection too. The mint and lime is lovely to sip neat. They also have mead and polish beer. Service is warm and helpful. I visited in a group of 13 last week and they were wonderful, even giving a free drink to the birthday girl. A great experience!

I rarely give places 5 out of 5, but that is most certainly (in my eyes) what this fantastic Polish…read morerestaurant deserves. I had heard about this place through fellow Yelper Katy H's review and was pretty excited at the prospect of sampling Polish cuisine (which I hadn't tried before). I had posted on Social Media before our visit asking for recommendations of things to try; soup, dumpings and apple cake were the top menu items cited by friends and the Twitterati. The venue is cited in between Digbeth and town (behind Moor Street rail station). Lauren W. had sent out instructions before our visit on how to find it (thank goodness she did) as it's not immediately obvious if you're not that familiar with this particular part of town. I have to say, it doesn't look like much from the outside. It's not glam or posh, but once you wander in you will be charmed by it's attention to detail, design touches and ambiance. Have you ever been to a place that had a thatched roof INSIDE? Get yourself down to the Karczma for a world of fluffy rugs, stuffed hawks, ceramic twee ornaments and exposed wooden beams. I cannot rave enough about just how darn CUTE this venue is. It has a mix of booths and tables, so would be perfect for a date or a meal out with friends (and family). We had a quick look at the menu (which is in Polish and English) and quickly made our choices. I had, had a couple of sneaky pints before our visit; but the rest of my dining group opted for a cup of mead to accompany their meal (the mead selection is fantastic). Once we had ordered, we were invited to go to the appetiser table which offered rye bread, pickles and the most amazing lard (Yes, you read that right, lard) I have ever had. To start, I was won over by a soup that comes in it's own bread bowl. This was by far one of the meatiest soups I have ever had with smoked sausage, lardons and lots of tasty things in a broth. There is literally nothing to complain about, it was delicious. For my mains (even though I was pretty stuffed from the starter), I went for the beef stew served in a potato pancake with a "selection of salads". The salads were carrot, beetroot and some kind of coleslaw (without any mayo). Again, everything was totally delicious but I just couldn't finish my potato pancake. It felt like I was eating dark matter! I tried some of my friends beetroot consommé soup and another friends Pierogi whilst we were dining and both were excellent. I couldn't manage a dessert (I felt like I was going to fall asleep I was so full!), but I, again, I had a bite of someone else's. A gooseberry mousse dessert which had the consistency of blancmange rather than mousse, but it tasted really, really good too. 8 of us had starters, mains and at least one drink (some had 3) and the bill came to £280. It's not the cheapest restaurant in Birmingham, but for a unique, delicious and FILLING dining experience I would recommend the Karczma to anyone who will listen.

Gluten free is labelled on the menu under a small section, which basically only includes grilled cod, salmon, or chicken with rice and salad, I really didn't like this because there wasn't much choice for gluten free, it just was really basic, for example they just sold grilled products hence even the menu leaved a lot to be desired as what was on the menu sounded like it would lack flavour. I was also upset with the poor range of sides being gluten free, as brown rice and salad were the only options. Service here also seemed quite poor, I had to walk all the way down to find a member of staff to serve me, who lacked confidence and a great knowledge of gluten free, she tried to point out the small section on the menu, which I had to point out to her and I can't understand why it would be classed as a "Gluten free menu" when it was a section on the menu, probably as small as Liverpool's title chances this season. Due to really poor service, a poor choice for gluten free and the slightly overpriced nature, I sadly feel Baltic Cellar Grill in Bolton's The Vaults, deserves a single one star rating.

Booooo! But when I was recently passing through The Vaults area of Bolton Market Place, I saw a sign saying that Baltic Cellar was opening there soon... right near home! Fantastic! So I finally got to visit. Baltic Cellar is a grill restaurant which specialises in Polish, Russian, and Baltic foods. which means hearty meaty foods usually, and speciality drinks. As you walk in, you see that the décor is modern with abundant wood cladding and warm tones, but with nods in theming to traditional elements with taxidermy, pine cone decorations, and traditional art. Music is background and unintrusive, which coupled with the dim lighting and wooden tones makes the space feel cosy and relaxed. We're greeted and seated promptly. The menu is full of delicious options in starters, mains, and a grill section, as well as a gluten free section and childrens section. There's also an extensive drinks menu. For our starter we choose to try 'The Tower' which is fried Lithuanian brown bread with cheese and garlic, and Zhulian, which is a fried mushroom casserole with chicken, onion, double cream, and baked cheese. Whilst waiting for our food we looked in the drinks menu and saw some great non-alcoholic options (as we don't drink), and it was nice to see that the cuisine type even extended to soft drinks, allowing us to order some drinks we'd never tried before. We ordered Tarhun, which is described as a green lemonade, and Kvas, which is listed as a malt drink. We didn't know much about these drinks so looked them up whilst waiting for our starters. It turns out "green lemonade" is an underestimation for how green this drink was! It turns out its made with flavours of tarragon and woodruff, and is wonderfully refreshing and tasty. I was really impressed. Kvas it turns out is made with fermented sourdough bread, which we found surprising. The taste is truly unique, starting with a similar flavour to something like Dandelion and Burdock or Root Beer, and ending up with a flavour similar to having eaten a Cadbury Roses coffee centred chocolate. Both were really tasty, and we'd order again them again next time for certain. The starters arrived. The Tower living up to its name of a Jenga tower of delicious crunchy batons of brown bread, with melted cheese dribbled over the top. It was very good, and very moreish. It worked really well with the cheese, but I bet would work equally well with some dips or liquid cheese. The Zhulian was delicious and creamy, and full of flavour. It came with a slice of bread, but would benefit from a few more, but it turns out the Tower's bread batons work very well indeed with it! For our main we decided to order the mixed grill, which was recommended for two people to share. This took a little longer to arrive than expected, but given the comfy atmosphere of the venue, this was fine. Our waitress also came over to let us know that it wouldn't be too much longer, which was appreciated. The mixed grill comprises of pork rib, lamb, chicken, pork neck loin, two sausages, and was served with any two sides, and any two sauces. We chose potato wedges and spicy rice as our sides, and Baltic sauce and 'green' sauce as our sauces. These sauces didn't sound like they were going to be anything special but they were truly delicious, and really enjoyable to dunk the various meats in to see which worked best. The Baltic sauce was made with ketchup, mayonnaise, coriander, dill and garlic, and so had a Thousand Island feel but with extra depth. The 'green' sauce was gherkins, coriander, dill, mayonnaise, and garlic, and had a wonderfully fresh and creamy taste to it. The food itself was excellent. The mixed grill was filling and tasty. Everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked, with the rib meat falling off the bone. The sides were tasty and fresh too. I'd love to say that we tried one of the delicious Baltic desserts, but the starters, mixed grill and sides were so very filling that we simply didn't have the room! The value was also very good, not even coming close to breaking the bank, with special offers mentioned on flyers and menus, and lunchtime offers. We were both thoroughly impressed with Baltic Cellar and will definitely return. We know several people who will really enjoy it here, and we recommend it if you enjoy hearty and fresh food in a pleasant environment.
