I always like having a quick browse at the antiques; you can find some interesting bits and bobs. Little ornaments, bowls, old kitchen ware and jewellery, there's lots of trinkets to rifle through. The second (or third) hand book section is my favourite. There is always a big range of old books. They have clothing too, which can be hit and miss but is generally ok quality. The Market can vary in price, sometimes it's reasonable and other times I think it's overpriced. I guess different items hold differing value for different people. It's worth a look anyway, even if it's just for a curious browse

Filled with genuine vintage treasures that are all tastefully grouped and merchandised, you can find anything from gardening implements and kitchen utensils to clothes and wall hangings in here. A lot of the stock is actually supplied by locals, who bring in stuff to sell to Margie, and anything she thinks isn't suitable or doesn't sell during sale time she sends off to give to the local hospice. She also has a vibrant personality so is great to talk to whilst you peruse the vintage racks or browse through old postcards.

I hope they don't move too far away where ever they go! The woman behind the counter has always been really friendly, chatty and helpful when I have been in. They have a long rack of children's clothes for those with youngsters, a decent range of men's wear (generally x-large though), lots of women's clothes, books in an organised fashion, some great crockery (I have bought some matching vases) and glassware. The best bit really is that it is the most affordable I have seen in Auckland. Not only do they have a $1 rack out the front with decent enough clothes, but they also have on offer 50C containers of clothes (children's and adults). It offers prices that most of us would expect to pay for second hand. This isn't me being stingy, this is me being practical - these charity second hand shops support the needy and they sell to those of us who struggle to fill a wardrobe with brand new clothes. Run by some elderly volunteers possibly from the next door Anglican Church, they are cheerful group. I actually was in store on a mission to find a cast iron fry pan, my partner and I had been on the lookout for and old school pan to gift to my mum, as she had admired our cool antique one. The shop is full to the brim with all kinds of things; clothes, cutlery, books, videos, music, tea pots, crockery, pots and pans. I didn't leave with the wanted pan in hand but I did find the perfect pot, which till today still serves us well in the kitchen. This op shop is always worth a stop in when in the village, as you really never can tell what they will be selling, and it's always a hunt for gold really.

Books, clothes, kitchenware, toys...all sorts. People just drop their unwanted goods at the door and you come in and buy them for cheap. The exciting bit is that it's a lottery. Sometimes you'll leave empty handed, other times you'll take home the full 'Clan of the Cave Bear' series, a new skirt and a set of tea cups. My favourite thing about the Matakana Op Shop is the smell. Yes it's a little musty and moth ball smelling (again think your hallway cupboard) but that to me is the smell of treasure hunting, and if you're lucky enough treasure is what you'll find!

This has got to be my favourite place to shop. It's sinister. It's grubby. It's dangerous…read more (seriously you can snag your arm or leg on a dirty old metal thingy and get tetanus) but it's also enticing and exciting. The proprietor is a piece of work. I don't even know what I mean by that. Maybe I mean "a work of art" if that art is alternative, and an acquired taste. Don't go there. Leave all the treasures for me. Take cash!. Don't expect change! Don't expect small talk! Don't expect a friendly smile and warm handshake... but you just never know. PS You know how to haggle, right???

It has the words "no eftpos" painted about the door in the kind of demented scrawl of a possessed child. It's the perfect place to go if you love masochistically trawling through dirty, dusty, rickety piles of other people's discarded crap. I am down with the cause. I once bought a ladder from Super Trash for a show I was doing. It was wooden and shitty and great. I was able to climb up and down that ladder every day for about three weeks and it didn't break. It was a friggen miracle. I love that ladder. It only cost twenty bucks.

It's sandwiched between beauty and nail parlors so is a good pop-into shop if you're waiting for your appointment. You usually only need a quick browse as it can be pretty hit and miss. When you hit, you hit. I once picked up a nice floral skirt that I still wear today for only $30. I'm starting to think that it was a once off though as I haven't had much luck since. Perhaps the regulars snap all the good items up as soon as they come out! It can be slightly pricey too, but I guess as the clothing selection in Orewa is so dismal they price how they like
