Which is what conservatism really is when you peel off all the BS stickers and labels the confused and easily misled like to slap onto conservative thinkers or speakers. I started listening to the station a couple days after 9/11 when I realized CNN, NBC and the rest of the alphabet media was just recycling the SAME OLD news footage of the towers crumbling over and over ad nauseum minus any real information. I wanted to know more about these enemies of my beloved country! (that I didn't even know I had, thanks to the sissified mainstream media) What kind of people would commit this kind of atrocity? Why did the Towers pancake so badly? The who, what, where, how, and why of real journalism was supplied by the various hosts and guests on KFYI. Ten years later, I am still a loyal listener. Yes, the commercials are annoying, and sometimes ludicrous - But aren't they all? KFYI will give you information and knowledge, not edited, censored, and politically correct pablum like the mainstream news stations deliver - If you are woman or man enough to take it.....I suggest listening to the station daily for just a couple weeks to see if you like it.

So I was introduced to this station about 6 months ago by a fellow yelper who goes by Amy D... She…read morehas a wicked 8-10 spot on Tuesdays and I thoroughly enjoy listening to it on a weekly basis. Well, I was happened upon an opportunity... Nay! A priviledge of being a guest on this FABULOUS show and, being the attention whore that I have been labeled, I accepted. I won't go into HOW I found myself being handed this prestigious title of KWSS Guest, but it involved a House of Clubs, Twitter, and a whole lot of begging (on my part)... There I was... in the presence of 100% pure, raw (Can't decide which word to use "Talent" or "Creativity") and in a pretty bad ass studio. The Fabulous Amy and I discussed all the important topics of the nation/world and stumbled on numerous great ideas. One being a cure for cancer! Okay, we didn't discover a cure per say... but we did briefly talk about it. The listeners were top notch and the atmosphere was professional, yet extremely comfortable. Plus, we actually got some free talent from a caller! He was awesome and sang me happy birthday. It was sexy. Thanks for a great time, Amy and KWSS! You rock, alternatively!

I don't usually go out of my way to review a radio station, but I've been digging listening to KWSS…read more106.7 a lot since coming back from NY some months ago. Never paid much attention to it prior, but it's truly a cool little quirky and local indie station found in a sea of audio sameness. Local DJ's talking about local issues (sometimes with other local business owners, and occasionally veering into nonsensical home basement/collegiate Wayne's World/Goth Talk territory), great indie music in the evenings (when I need to have Shazam or Soundhound ready), retro afternoons, a cheesy show completely in Italian on Sunday mornings (?!), an interesting non-traditional take on the music and history of the Beatles, instant web streaming, and more. It' feels like radio's version of Tempe, except that it'sbroadcast from Scottsdale. So 4-ish stars. Mainly because I like this station's spirit, even if the conversations of the show hosts often veer off on the most random tangents.

Some people can't be bothered clearing last week's lunch trash off their desk. Some people still toss cigarettes and food trash onto the 405. Some people complain about having public dump sites only a few miles away. In Cateura, Paraguay, the town is built on top of a landfill. Like the protagonists in Kurosawa's 1970 film, "Dodeska-den," the citizens of Cateura may be poor but their lives are nonetheless vibrant and full. The trash that comes to their third world living environment from the larger cities around them have long since become a source of livelihood for many, including local luthier and humble garbage picker, Nicholas "Cola" Gomez, and musician, Favio Chavez. Recycling bits and pieces from the refuse, Cola and Favio ingeniously replicate working orchestral instruments for the local children to use to learn and play music. Favio and his growing number of students have also formed "The Recycled Orchestra," whose real-life characters and stories became the inspiration for the Landfill Harmonic, a pending movie by film producers Alejandra Nash and Juliana Penaranda-Loftus. Thanks to the exposure from their initial trailer released in December that went viral, millions of people are now aware of the impoverished conditions in Cateura, and that despite the trash and the odds, Cola and Favio are making beautiful instruments, and the children they make the instruments for are making beautiful music. After exchanging a short series of emails to connect with enthusiastic Chris from California and Gabrielle from Bolivia to find out more about the intriguing Landfill Harmonic, I made a pledge to help fund their Kickstarter project and Alejandra and Juliana's movie that is currently still in mid-production. It's a small thing for me to do, perhaps the cost of a meal or two. Concert tickets, music lessons and instruments already cost prohibitive amounts here in the U.S. How is someone from a place like Cateura's slums supposed to buy an instrument that typically costs more than the very home they live in? What started from garbage became an orchestra, a project, eventually a movie, and potentially a worldwide movement that hopes to help similarly underserved communities give their children the tools and the means to hope and dream big. It's a good start when people are able to do something positive that affects change in a small area, and it is even better if other people can learn from the change and share, apply and amplify the lessons they've learned to affect change all over the world. In our day-to-day lives, it can sometimes feel like there's nothing we can really do to help or to change things in any meaningful way. There's so much wrong out there, i.e. http://kck.st/12fyTSa. Its a great read - well edited so the stories are short and to the point. You give me state news as well as the on-going golf course fight updates in depth. Knowledge of the mountain creatures as well as trail news etc. And really endearing local stories about those great local teens and their accomplishments. Ahwatukee is home to the best hope for the future. The value in easily keeping up with just the important things, not the murders and car wrecks and flotsam and jetsom re-copied from other newspapers; or the crazy things going on in California we can't do anything about anyway. No, I'd say these are the happy newsworthy stories that one can read while having a coffee. And then actually feel pretty good about life.
