Which is what conservatism really is when you peel off all the BS stickers and labels the confused and easily misled like to slap onto conservative thinkers or speakers. I started listening to the station a couple days after 9/11 when I realized CNN, NBC and the rest of the alphabet media was just recycling the SAME OLD news footage of the towers crumbling over and over ad nauseum minus any real information. I wanted to know more about these enemies of my beloved country! (that I didn't even know I had, thanks to the sissified mainstream media) What kind of people would commit this kind of atrocity? Why did the Towers pancake so badly? The who, what, where, how, and why of real journalism was supplied by the various hosts and guests on KFYI. Ten years later, I am still a loyal listener. Yes, the commercials are annoying, and sometimes ludicrous - But aren't they all? Heads up to the engineering team: your news update audio is totally blown out. The levels are so high that the speakers pop, forcing me to mute the app every half hour. It feels very unprofessional for a major station. Please fix the gain on your news recordings ASAP! For your reference, here is what is happening (again, there is no way I believe you don't know this already): The technical term for this specific scenario is Input Clipping or Preamp Clipping. This happens at the very beginning of the audio chain:Mic Overload: If the person is shouting or too close to the mic, the sound pressure might exceed the microphone's Maximum SPL (Sound Pressure Level), causing the mic's own internal components to distort.Preamp Clipping: The most common culprit. The microphone sends a signal to a preamplifier to boost its volume. If the Input Gain on that preamp is set too high, the signal "hits the ceiling" of what the electronics can handle.A/D Clipping: In digital recording, if the boosted signal is too "hot" when it hits the Analog-to-Digital converter, the tops of the sound waves are chopped off, resulting in harsh, digital static.Because the distortion is "baked in" at the source, turning down your own volume won't fix the sound--you'll just be listening to quieter distortion. This is often referred to as a failure in Gain Staging, which is the process of managing volume levels at each step of the recording process to ensure a clean signal. read more

I start my day with James T Harris. It makes my exercise routine go by quickly. He is making this new normal not so painful. I especially appreciate his Friday sign off prayer. The mayor of Gila Bend was informing us on how the Harris/Biden open border is having an impact on his town and asked James to include them in his prayer. I bounce around listening to different talk radio, sometimes KTAR, KFYI and NPR. I really try to listen to 'both sides' so I can be a more compassionate and understanding/considerate/respectful of others views that differ from my own. And to be well rounded as I know my opinion isn't the only right or correct one. Yes, sometimes it is quite difficult to listen, and continue to listen, to opinions that are not in line with your own. I also admit that it is even harder when opinions are STRONG and unrelenting. Probably why I listen less to KFYI because it derails from talk-radio to shut-up-and-listen radio. (FCC went so far as to call some talk show host remarks "irresponsible and dangerous" when they spouted extremist banter). So I give credit to stations and networks that have a few moral, ethical and value-oriented talk show hosts (like some on NPR, or Broomhead and I respect their opinion while not always agreeing with it.) I value those who seek the truth, have integrity, uncover injustice and expose misinformation. Problem is, much of the news business is about the pursuit of ratings. In part, the media inflames passions to monetize all that passes through its sphere. I have heard this with iHeart radio and Fox News time and again. I really wish all hosts would stop bashing or find more balance of positives that go with the negatives. We have soooo much negativity with politics (which has a lot of controversy, which begets a lot of air time... and ratings) such a shame with so many media outlets. Maybe news talk radio should be more accurately renamed Editorial Radio. Thing is, facts are facts, but facts are also interpretable. Meaning, it can go either or both ways. Depending on how it's viewed. Also, facts can have 2 sides and if both 'sides' are not included or discussed (this can be the case with Fox News and some hosts) then the information is skewed and the listener is under informed. Stoking a very vocal fanbase (James T. Harris, Hannity) for higher ratings, with fear or anger (or worse, unfounded conspiracy theories) - seeks to exploit a systemic anomaly. The answer? Thanks for getting rid of Chris Merrill. He was an immediate channel change as soon as I heard his voice. There is a liberal station in town where he will be welcomed with open arms. Trump says and does many dumb things, and deserves criticism, however Merrill was all about constant mockery and bashing of Trump, and worse, his supporters, portraying them all as knuckle dragging trailer trash klansmen. The truth is, plenty of very normal people put up with Trumps stupid comments because actions speak louder than words, and despite the media insanity, things are going the right way with Trump, much more so than if Hillary had won. Just discovered Rob Carson couple of weeks ago. Finally someone I can listen to. For years ( going back to Bruce Jacobs) I was an avid listener of afternoon KFYI until Chris Merrill came on the air. I got so tired of his constant digs at Trump or the people who voted for him that I gave up on KFYI. Trump is definitely not perfect. But listening to Merrill I never had to wait long for a dig about Trump or how his followers were more or less knuckle dragging racists. Man o man. Give it a rest! Then I read about the "new guy", Rob Carson. So I tried KFYI again. Ahhhhh! That's more like it. His schtick kind of reminds of the good ole days with Bruce. I like the conservative content a lot. I'm just a little disappointed with the $1000 give-away 12 times a day. I listen carefully, but get it wrong some of the time because the announcer needs to speak more slowly and clearly. The last one sounded like "buzz" but I got it wrong. read more

I've been a loyal KFYI listener from the very beginning - literally Day 1. It used to be a great station to listen to. Not anymore - and there's one reason I'm tuning to another talk station: I loathe the male erection ads that seem to run endlessly on 550. All morning, all afternoon, all night. Overall, I enjoy KFYI programming, but last Sunday I was extremely disappointed with the Ric Edelman financial program when his wife came on and gave a five minute spiritual sermonette. She started out chronicling the recent events and listing the many ways people might be feeling overwhelmed and depressed. Then she launched into a hocus-pocus recipe for finding the light and sending the light or some such baloney. I appreciate Ric's knowledge about finance and investing but when I want a sermon I'll tune in to someone of my own choosing. As Tom Peters once said, "stick to your knitting." read more

KFYI 550AM is mainly a right-leaning conservative station. Most of the programs are ideologically conservative. Some of it however is not at all related to politics and deals with current affairs. Pros: KFYI 550 AM is a great supporter of local businesses and often the hosts themselves vouch for many of the local businesses. Ads are predominantly for local businesses. Cons: There are too many ads and they occur too often. Sometimes the hosts delve upon minor issues for too long. Also in order to emphasize their point, they repeat the same message too often. That is great to drive home the point - if you are not very smart. But most people would find it unnecessary repetition. Also, sometimes the hosts, programs and messages border on the ultra-conservative. read more

There might be a place in talk radio where you can play it down the middle (which I doubt) but you'd have to be WAY more knowledgeable than he is. Love James T Harris! We listen to 550 whenever we are in the car, EXCEPT when Chris Merrill show is on! He is the worst talk show host we have ever heard. That is the only show on 550 we have to turn off when it comes on. It is so juvenile and shallow and pointless, with no substance. I enjoy listening to Broomhead, Limbaugh and Hannity. Chris Merrill thinks he is funny. His humor is sophomoric at best, but in most instances it is moronic. He also leaves out pertinent information when he goes on his tirades. I use to listen to Merrill for 15 minutes, then it was down to 10 and then 5, now I just turn off the station once he gets on. He comes out with garbage that he "hates them all" as if he has no interest in either political party. Yeah right. Merrill is a liberal and is on the wrong station. When Trump was running for president, 9 out 10 times he was bashing Trump and the 1 time out of 10 when it came to Clinton, it was just light criticism of Clinton. read more

Ditto on the Coast to Coast AM. It sucks that Premiere Radio Networks (are they owned by Clear Channel?) syndicates the show, because I hate having to go to the Dark Side to listen to George Noory. What I think's really funny about some of the local KFYI hosts, especially the fill-in hosts, is that Clear Channel is too cheap to give them their own e-mail addresses, so when you listen to their shows, they give a generic Yahoo e-mail address like they're amateurs. (Which, of course, they are, otherwise they'd have an official Clear Channel e-mail address.) Most Arizona natives, of course, know that pre-Clear Channel, pre-Rush KFYI used to be a cool station when they had the likes of Earl Baldwin, Tom Leykis, and some of their colorful overnight hosts. Now, it's like everyone's a carbon copy of Rush and Hannity, except for George Noory and "Coast to Coast AM," which is syndicated. Clear Channel really drove KFYI into the ground. read more

The morning show has become a bit Juvenile since Barry left and Michelle was fired. Rush is a must. Hannity is good. I love it when the new guy Chris 'Hosehead" Merrill comes on because it reminds me to switch over to the Mark Levin show.
