Betty's Airport Cafe - A plate of fried rice

Army soldiers traveling to and from Fort Sill deserve better than this. Okay, maybe the place wasn't that bad. The USO at the Lawton Airport did give me a meal voucher, so I was able to get my lunch for free here. Still, that was just about the only redeeming quality that this restaurant had. The airport is tiny, only has one airplane going to and from it, and there's only one restaurant in the whole place. If you're hungry while waiting for your flight here... yeah, sorry but your food options are limited to this and vending machines basically. I ordered a plate of fried rice here; it would have cost about ten dollars had I not used that meal voucher. Apparently, there is a need to distinguish "Oriental" style food from everything else here. Service was quick since there was nobody ahead of me, but the rice itself was terribly generic. I could have come up with something better in the same amount of time. It was oily, probably cooked hastily, and I get the feeling that whoever cooked it probably doesn't know how to make fried rice, so they just threw a bunch of ingredients together and called it a dish. Even though the restaurant is one of a kind in its location, I feel as if people generally neglect it. There are HDTVs, and I was able to be left alone watching them. But it's kind of a strange feeling, since it feels like nobody is really watching the place. It's just that deserted. The people running the business don't seem to take their job that seriously either, since they probably know that they'll never see most of their customers again. Unless you can get a free meal here, it's probably better just to get your food from somewhere else if you can.

Food was decent. Cafe was clean. Staff was extremely friendly. High prices, but you kind of expect…read morethat when there's really no other dining options at the airport.

With our dog in tow, we needed pet-friendly seating, and Joe Mountain fit the bill with their outdoor patio. It turned out to be the perfect choice--the weather was beautiful, and the back patio was completely empty, giving us a quiet, relaxing spot to enjoy our meal. The indoor space is small with limited seating, but the patio more than made up for it. The menu is on the smaller side, but the items were unique and definitely caught our attention. My wife ordered the Baffle--a creative take on biscuits and gravy where the biscuit is pressed into a waffle. I went with the Blue Cheese Omelette. Honestly, I never would have thought of putting blue cheese in an omelet, but it worked! It was rich, flavorful, and so memorable that I'm planning to recreate it at home. Drink choices were limited (no sodas except root beer), but we made it work. Service was easy--we were told to order inside when ready, and everything came out promptly. Overall, Joe Mountain was a fun little stop with a quirky menu and a great outdoor setup. We couldn't have picked a better day to visit, as the timing and crowd level made the experience even better. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area, especially if you enjoy patio dining with a pet by your side!
