Over the last four years I've tried this store on multiple occasions because I try to go out of my…read moreway to patronize local businesses and avoid chain stores, but I'm done with De Kalb Hardware. I'd rather drive a half hour to Texarkana or Mt. Pleasant. The last straw was stopping there the other day for three gallons of paint. One of the associates was helping another customer at the paint counter so I waited behind him. She then took him to the front of the store to the cash registers. (To be clear, she wasn't the only one working; there was another girl at the cash registers.) She didn't acknowledge me in any way: no "I'll be right back; let me get this gentleman checked out" or anything like that. I waited and waited; looked up at the front a couple of times--still ringing him up and having a kaffee klatsch with him, it looked like--and the last time I checked she was cozying up to another male customer who had some kind of hardware in his hand that they were discussing. She was clearly in no rush to get back to the paint department, so I dropped the paint chip on the counter and walked out. I say that she was "cozying up" because over the last four years of trying this place repeatedly I've become convinced that the only reason they use mostly-uninformed girls as employees is that they're trying to appeal to male customers. Women can go hang because they aren't marriage material, I guess. It's like that every time I've gone in there, which is why I'm bringing it up as objectionable: The girls who work there suck up to the male customers but don't have the time of day for you if you're a woman. If you have a technical question they usually end up calling one of the male managers to resolve it, so they aren't there because they're hardware experts, and after four years the pattern is too obvious to ignore. The next time I want something I'll go to New Boston, because at least the Ace Hardware employees don't act like I'm invisible. They're always happy to help out. On top of all that, if you're a woman shopping at De Kalb Hardware you'll pay a premium price to get treated like a second-class citizen because their prices are among the highest around.
