We went 3 times-bought 1st time the bargain basement pricing on 1 item, 2nd time gift for xmas and 3rd time did not buy anything. I will say if you want one pot or pan and not an entire set then you can get that there. I rarely see anyone in the parking lot. The other thing was the 3rd time we went there was 1 checkout person, and 5 other people standing around talking up by the checkout we could not figure out why there was a line to checkout and 1 checkout person and 5 people standing around that worked there-not sure-we needed all of them checking people out or being trained, anyway does not matter, do not plan to go back. There was so much hype they were bargain basement pricing, I did not find that to be true. We were not looking for any 1 specific item, but we did a lot of price checking and they just did not live up to the hype I was sold.

I think the problem is that they have a lot of staff turnover - every time I go in, there is someone new behind the counter. If you order anything besides a regular coffee, it's a gamble whether or not it's going to be made the same as the last time you got it. About half the time, it seems the employee makes up the recipe on the spot. Also, there is definitely a problem with some unpleasant people taking orders. I mean, how hard is it to say "please" and "thank you", and avoid complaining about the customer's special order while the customer is standing 5 feet away watching the order being made?

TLDR: Good prices AND good quality. I'll never understand the people who think getting a good deal…read moreon groceries means you're low-class. Their loss, I guess. MENU: The gist of ALDI's business model is they stock a relatively limited selection of items at the best price they can offer, with the smallest crew of staff that can still keep the machine running. You won't find forty slightly different variations of ketchup, but the one they have is decent, and affordable. That said, they have far more than you might suppose they would; they have some ready-to-eat stuff, a little area for housewares, and a little bit of everything you would expect when it comes to the brand-name goods. FOOD QUALITY: The produce is always fresh, the perishables get a discount sticker a day or two before they get taken off the shelves, and the aisles are always orderly and well-managed. MENU FAVORITES: It's hard for me to talk about ALDI without comparing it to the Hy-Vee. I'm a big fan of potato salad, for example. Every potato salad I've tried at the Hy-Vee is garbage. The last I got there was a pint of some their handmade stuff; it was watery, the spuds were undercooked, and it had basically no seasoning. The stuff at ALDI is a world apart - my favorite is the steakhouse style. I also like the marinated pork loin, kebabs, and some of the other pre-seasoned items they offer over in the meat section. Beyond that, they have most of your standard name-brand fare. MENU FAILS: Not too much to add to this list, but I got a pack of rough-chopped beef stew meat that was borderline inedible, because it was so full of gristle. That's the only thing I've purchased from ALDI so far that I wasn't satisfied with. Their ice cream selection is pretty poor as well, I would say. FRONT OF HOUSE SERVICE: The cashiers are polite and friendly. They are also doing the automated check-out thing, just like everywhere else, which I can't stand. I always go to the human cashier, because I would rather my neighbors had jobs than AI. KITCHEN SERVICE: ALDI doesn't have a deli counter or a cafe. COMPETITION: Let's go into more detail about the Hy-Vee, as a point of comparison. Take avocados for example. At the Hy-Vee, half of the avocados are over-ripe, squished to death, and in some cases even molding around the stem, while the other half will be rock hard for a week; but they'll still try to flog them off on a customer that doesn't know any better. At ALDI, they're all fresh and in good shape. Take NatureSweet Cherubs - the little grape tomatoes - as another example: five bucks at the Hy-Vee, or around $3.50 at the ALDI. Same brand, different price. 30% difference isn't trivial savings when you're buying groceries for a family. The upside of the Hy-Vee, on the other hand, is the sheer variety. If you need shallots, flat-leaf parsley, and Castelvetrano olives for a specific recipe, go to the Hy-Vee. Otherwise, for your everyday staples, go to Aldi. The Hy-Vee also excels when it comes to stocking a wide variety of factory-made foods - they've got pizza and ice cream for days. Even so, the ALDI's frozen pizzas are probably good enough for most folks. They come up lacking in the ice cream category, though, IMO. As far as places like Dollar Tree and Wally World, they might have similar, or lower, prices on some items, but the quality goes way down too. With ALDI, broadly speaking, you get good quality as well as a good deal. The Country View outside Memphis, MO is where you go if you want absolute rock-bottom price bent-and-dent type stuff. There you can find a 10-pound sack of freezer burned pre-cooked sausages, a year expired, for a dollar. To each their own. Country View does have an excellent deli counter. If you're looking for cold cuts in particular, give them a try. ATMOSPHERE: Basic and utilitarian; but clean, tidy, and pleasant.
