The Staff is well informed and involved in supporting the community via the Kiwanis Farmers Market in Kirksville and beautifying the highways by participating in Highway Clean up projects. We saw a PBS show…read morethat talked to her ... about her blue ribbons at the ISF and old-fashioned canning of so many wonderful foods. Even though you can buy Kathy's products in Peoria, we made a day trip of it. We bought about 18 jars of various jellies, jams, salsas and her famous pickled beets. My favorites were the habanero salsa and jalapeño jellies. We had a good visit. She's a charming woman ... a one of a kind.

Being near-vegan from the "big city" is nearly enough to qualify as the aluminum-jumpsuit yuppie neighbors from an 80s movie (and yes she drives a Prius) but Ackles has got it all - a great, fresh fruit and vegetable selection, an incredible array of small-farm cheeses that compel me to break edge every time, more Bob's Red Mill stuff than you can find in most health stores, and a wall of Braggs that'll make your 108-yr old great-grand-aunt get out on the floor to the BeeGees with vim and vigor. We've also been buying up the bags of crostini chips in the back corner to go with those cheeses, and there's a collector's dream of vinegars, oils, and dressings as well. Did I mention all of this is priced so affordably it makes our refugee-farmer CSA pricing look ridiculous! We really appreciate this little stop along the highway!

I stop at every single farmer's market I come across. While down in Quincy visiting my baby brother at college, we headed to Thyme Square Café for lunch before hitting the road to come home. When we arrived on 5th street, we parked and saw the farmers market taking place. I immediately asked my sister and brother if we could walk it before we ate and they both agreed. Thanks, guys! Its a small market but they had plenty of options of fresh fruits and veggies, baked goods, crafty items, homemade artsy stuff, plants and much more. I split a crate of peaches with my sister for $10 ($5 ea.), picked up some HEATLESS jalapenos which I later that week sliced and put on a homemade pizza back at home and even grabbed a small peach pie for $3. I was very impressed with the heatless jalapenos...I had never seen anything like them before and was blown away that these exist and more so, that I liked them as much as I did. In fact, I am actually going to see if I can find some seeds and grow some at home this summer. We'll be back down in the area in May and I'm very hopeful that this market is open while we're there because I know my hubby would love it, too! Final thought...the people here were SUPER friendly. Totally loved them to pieces!
