Walmart is getting into the flowers act.
    Jana D.

I like that this Walmart because it has groceries, which is surprising, because I would have thought the store in Centrum would also offer groceries, which they do not. So, kudos to this Walmart! They also have a garden centre, and a McDonald's inside, coz dontcha know shopping is hungry work, even in these pandemic times!!

So I've had the occasional check in to go see, but I don't have a Dukedom in Yelp for this store... yet. So we were poking about in the Tanger Outlet Mall the other day (it was a beautiful sunny winter day! Needed to be outside taking a walk), and came around the corner to notice how really BIG this Marshall's is, compared to some of the other stores in the mall. There's room for quite a few more stores to open up behind it! So, the experience was good; there was some nice selection. I managed to find a pair of pants for under $25.00. Go me!!! It just occurred to me: the store reminds me of winners in the way that it's set up: rack upon rack of clothing, and you can see over the racks. It's a big store, fairly bright. And I need to keep poking about in here! LOL

I'm a big fan of the "home" section. While I also love the clothes and shoes, I tend to get lost in it all, so I stick to the things that we need for the house (and are more easily justifiable to the hubby if it's an item to improve the home rather than another pari of shoes...). Pro tip - at the end of the isles, there is usually a clearance section that gets cheaper the longer the items remain in the store. It's usually a bit "picked-through" but I ahve found some real gems there!

It is hard not to find anything at HomeSense that is not priced reasonably. Like other reviewers have mentioned, since it is located on Merivale Road, it should be avoided on the weekends. Not only that but avoid this location on Monday's as well, the stock is usually low, and the store is left with all the "left overs" from the weekend, that did not sale. Usually give it a day or two for the staff to load up the shelves with new goodies after their weekend rush. Best time to shop is Tuesday-Friday in the evening or morning. Don't forget, interior decorators get a discount at HomeSense!!

Minus the drive on Merivale the trip to Homesense was pretty good. This Homesense is massive! There are a lot of items at this store and like most Homesense's the stock changes weekly. There were a lot of items for the house, some nice, some awfully hard to look at! The good thing about this Homesense is that there are a lot of items for pretty reasonable prices. I'd recommend going on a weekday as Merivale seemed like a zoo today and I hear it's like that on weekends.

So there are 4 Hudson's Bay Company stores in Ottawa. This Bayshore location ranks #2 in terms of…read moreselection. (#1 is Rideau Centre. St. Laurent and Place d'Orleans are interchangeable for #3 and #4). The Bay (as most Canadians call it) at Bayshore and Rideau both have Opticals - the other Ottawa locations do not. If you wear glasses, don't overlook the Optical at The Bay, they have a good selection of frames. The one at Bayshore carries Milano 6769 Eyewear. Made in Italy (as the name suggests) and really funky styles. Their prices are really reasonable as well. The staff are friendly too. For fashions, The Bay at Bayshore is good. It's a smaller location than Rideau, but larger than St. Laurent or Place d'Orleans. The selection of formal and party dresses is much less than at Rideau. For purses they do carry a small selection of "Contemporary Brands" like Coach, but I haven't seen Kate Spade or Marc Jacobs, like at Rideau (St. Laurent and Place d'Orleans carry none of these brands). They have a very limited toy section, but their shoe department is a good size. The one thing that The Bay Bayshore has over The Bay Rideau is free parking, although the parking lot is a nightmare (which is the fault of Bayshore Mall management/owners for hiring the person/people who designed the parking lot and not the fault of The Bay - see my review of the Bayshore Shopping Centre for more details on my disdain for the parking lot, lol). The Bay is one of the few department stores that are still leftover from my youth (RIP Eatons, Simpsons, and Sears), so I'll always have a soft spot for it.

I have a very special place in my heart for The Bay (it will forever be The Bay to me despite their…read morerecent-ish rebranding to "The Hudson's Bay") as it is the last standing department store from my childhood. Over the years, I have watched them all shutter, Simpsons, then Eaton's, then Sears. Even the discount department stores like Kresge, Woolco, Towers and Zellers, all gone. Only The Bay remains. Anyone remember The Bay Scratch and Save Days? Lol. Totally dating myself, haha. Anyway, The Bay is a department store with some higher end items and some more affordable items. Some of the flagship stores in larger cities like Toronto and Montreal have luxury items, but not the ones in Ottawa. This location at the Rideau Centre has a nicer selection than the locations at St. Laurent Shopping Centre or Bayshore Shopping Centre. This location also has a Forever 21 section (Forever 21 pulled out of the Canadian market a few years ago, so there are no free-standing brick and mortar stores in Canada, but their items can be found at select The Bay stores). It's where the Topshop section used to be before Topshop pulled out of Canada completely. This location has an optical that sells prescription glasses and contact lenses. There's also a Sunglasses Hut inside this The Bay location. There's also a hair salon called Hair Republic on the second floor, as well as a cafe on the main floor called Market X, but it is independently run, and the prices are high, it's not like the cafeteria that was at The Bay in downtown Toronto from days past (like 20 years ago, lol) that had affordable hearty meals for the downtown office workers, and the kids working a summer job downtown, like I was. Everything is vegan at Market X and it caters to the environmentally conscious well-heeled customer. Market X is where the Lindor Shop was before they closed. I like the mix of items available at The Bay. They sell lots of Canadiana, which make great souvenirs for tourists. They sell State and Main items, who doesn't want some Ketchup Chips socks and Poutine Christmas ornaments, right? Lol. This The Bay is actually across the street from The Rideau Centre, but it's connected by the bridge on the third floor. Street parking or paid parking lot parking only. No private free parking lot like at Bayshore or St. Laurent malls.

I had a good chat with a woman in the HUE leggings section. I was wearing a pair of corduroy ones. I was literally a walking example of how comfortable they were and are. The Bay is a store that I used to frequent when I first joined the workforce. It gave me a $500 credit card and I managed to get a decent wardrobe for my business office attire. I also learned that it's a ripoff getting a departmental store credit card where interest rates go through the roof. I eventually paid it off and cancelled it. Anyway, The Bay had pretty good deals on Saturdays. I don't know if that's the case these days. I would buy items that are on sale rather than buy them at full price. This store had a nice selection of size 11 shoes. Some were quirky, such as lemon slip-on sneakers and Doc Martens with embroidered flowers on them. I like browsing around in this store, looking at women's clothing, cookware, and more. I recommend waiting for a sale, as some items are more expensive than they should be. (247)
