This is a lovely park of nearly 100 acres (38 hectares) in south London between Croydon and Sutton,…read moremaintained by Sutton Borough. History Beddington Park was originally part of a deer park attached to Carew Manor, which in Tudor times occupied a large swathe of land between the present Mitcham Common, Beddington Lane, Croydon Road and London Road. Most of the northern part of the park had become fields by the mid 18th century, although the southern part survived as a deer park. This was purchased by Canon Alexander Henry Bridges, the Rector of Beddington, in 1859, when the last of the Carew line was forced to sell up to pay gambling debts. Much of the park today reflects Bridges' planting scheme, including the small kidney-shaped pond in the north of the park. The main lake in the south west of the park was originally a mill pond. The park and gardens were acquired by the Borough of Beddington & Wallington in 1935 and turned into a public park. The Manor also survives, albeit its day-to-day use is as a school. Tours to see the Grade I Listed building are arranged monthly during the summer on Sundays (ring 020 8770 4781 for details). The park today Today the park comprises a large area of open grassland with small clumps of trees, with an area of more formal gardens near the Grange restaurant, as well as the lake and pond. There are many paths and some attractive ornamental bridges, which cross the stream which feeds the lake: this is part of the River Wandle, and the park is on the Wandle Trail from Croydon to Wandsworth. Part of the park is managed as a wildlife site. Facilities include: - 3 Little League Football Pitches - 5 Senior Football Pitches - 2 Mini Pitches - 6 Tennis Courts - Ball Court - Skate Park - Sports Changing Rooms - Pavilion Cafe - Indoor Soft Play - Children's Playground - Toilets There is also an Orienteering Course, managed by Mole Valley Orienteering Club. Practicalities The park is bounded by the A232 Croydon Road and A237 London Road. There is parking by Church Road Paddock, to the rear of Beddington Park Cottages and by the children's playground and Pavilion area. The car parks are open 08:00 to dusk. It is well served by public transport. It is just 5 minutes' walk from Hackbridge station, and 20 minutes' walk from Wallington station. Buses 407, 410, 463, X26 run along Croydon Road, bus 151 along London Road and buses 455 and 463 along Beddington Lane, 10 minutes' walk way.
