My wife and I agreed this walking tour with Skip was the highlight of our 4 days in Charleston. It wasn't even close. Skip and another walking tour company came recommended to us from the Inn we were staying at in Charleston. We knew immediately we wanted to go with Skip because he was the company and not a large commercialized tour company. Our choice didn't disappoint. Skip met us at our Inn and we took a nice leisurely two hour tour around the waterfront, Rainbow Row, the historic home district, and other areas. Skip knew so much about the history and it turned out he had lived in the historic area when he was younger. This walking tour was a last minute addition to our first weekend trip to Charleston. It occurred to us that there is too much history here to miss, so we asked the staff at The Spectator Hotel to recommend a tour guide. Skip at Walking Charleston was their first recommendation and the whole event was organized very quickly. Skip called us directly the evening before to organize the details and to ask what we wanted to get out of the tour. He suggested we meet in our hotel lobby at 9:00am to avoid the large crowd tours that usually begin later in the morning. This was a great ideas as it gave us an intimate feel as we strolled many historic streets as the sole tour group. Skip comes from a multi-generational Charleston family with deep roots in the area. We were particularly impressed on how he wove in his family heritage and personal upbringing in discussions around the development of the South and race relations.
