Excellent tour! Martha is an anthropologist and is very friendly and interesting to talk to. She was open to questions and we greatly enjoyed our tour. I actually grew up in Charleston and have taken various other tours over the years but Martha told me many interesting things that I had never heard. I feel like I understand the city I grew up in and really our country's history a bit better too after just a two hour tour. Martha gives good perspective and connects things together in a way that gives you a much better understanding. Instead of just telling you what something is, she explains why it's that way. Our guide was Martha who is Anne's sister. Having get information from a 13th generation Charleston citizen firsthand was great. Besides the obvious history, she fascinated us with her personal stories of growing up in Charleston. She knew all the the nooks and crannies of the historic district. We took this tour yesterday, a Monday, to get a better sense of the history of Charleston from someone who has lived here her entire life and comes from a long line of Charlestonians(not sure if that's a word haha). But anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with Anne, our tour guide. We booked a morning tour,but it was rainy,so Anne texted us prior to the tour to see if we could make it at 1pm. I really appreciated how well she kept us in the loop via text messages. So we met up in Washington Square Park and there were 7 people total in our group. Anne welcomed us all,asked us where we were from etc. So for the next two hours, she had us walking all around at a good pace, while she told us stories of the history and how it relates to modern times, as well as her experiences growing up here. Anne was funny, talkative, and answered questions whenever we had them. I'm not a history buff, but Anne definitely made it an interesting for us. She also focused on the amazing Charleston architecture. At the end, she took us to her family's beautiful old house(actually seemed like several buildings) and into their courtyard where she offered us lemonade. Definitely recommend this tour! read more

One of the best walking tours we have ever had! Martha has a love for the city of Charleston. Being a 13th generation and archeologist, she was able to provide a picture of Charleston that is unique. The paths down the alleyways, the smell of the sea, the firsthand knowledge that the wealth of the city was built on the backs of slaves. It was so enlightening. Every time I saw a reed grass basket at the open market, I knew that the person who was making it was a descendent from the Gullah. We were so happy we booked with Martha, especially when we saw the very large groups of people making their way past us. I was so pleased by Anne and her personality as well as her education and organization of the walking tour. We met at the Customs House and as the tour progressed she was strategic in organizing the tour for multiple opportunities to sit down, sit in the shade and take occasional breaks for folks. I read great reviews of this tour and was VERY disappointed. Anne received great reviews but we had Brad Wallace and he was not a good tour guide. We did very little walking and Brad spent a lot of time talking about himself. He spent too much time talking about his family and his in-laws. It felt like a history of Brad's life in Charleston.
