Excellent tour! Martha is an anthropologist and is very friendly and interesting to talk to. She was open to questions and we greatly enjoyed our tour. I actually grew up in Charleston and have taken various other tours over the years but Martha told me many interesting things that I had never heard. I feel like I understand the city I grew up in and really our country's history a bit better too after just a two hour tour. Martha gives good perspective and connects things together in a way that gives you a much better understanding. Instead of just telling you what something is, she explains why it's that way. Like why is there stucco over brick here, both environmentally and culturally? I'm very glad I chose this tour and would definitely recommend her to anyone. read more

This 2 hour walking tour will give you a true understanding of the history of Charleston. Martha does an amazing job pointing out all the highlights, facts, and history of the city. She can trace her roots back to the 1600's, so she is a true expert of Charleston. My wife and I are avid walkers and enjoyed the 1.5 mile walk through the city. Even if you aren't in good shape, this walking tour is fairly easy. Just wear comfortable walking shoes. We highly recommend Martha and Charleston Perspective Walking Tour!! read more

My husband I were drawn into the near and distant history of Charleston by resident Anne's lively and knowledgeable walking tour. Her history is enlivened with tales handed down through many generations of families and thorough grounding in research. We are fit seniors though Anne gauges her walking to the abilities in the group. We recommend Anne's tours. read more

When we went to book a walking tour of Charleston, I specifically was looking for a historic tour. That's exactly what we got with the Charleston Perspective Walking Tour. Martha was our tour guide and she was excellent. She weaved in family stories into the information that she shared. What is promised in the website is exactly what is delivered. We saw all of the sites but most importantly, learned so much history. I highly recommend this tour. read more

The MOST informative tour my son and I have been on. It was amazing. Martha, being a native of Charleston with historically deep roots in our city, delivered an historically intriguing tour. Along the way, her presentation provoked questions (which I love) and she was able to answer and expound on the previous information she gave. It was like peeling back an onion. My son asked me so many questions on the way home. Thank you Martha for such an exquisite tour of our home. I couldn't have picked anyone better to guide our "tourist in our own city day". read more

While in Charleston we wanted a walking tour which didn't just show us pretty gardens and houses but also gave some insight into the history of Charleston. Anne definitely met those desires and went well beyond what we could have hoped for. She touched on a lot of the beauty of Charleston while also giving a lot of insight into how the city got to where it is today. She was energetic, engaging, and lead us through some really neat back areas of Charleston. We really got the sense that she loved the city and was delighted to share the history with others. I'd definitely recommend her for anyone looking for a walking tour of Charleston. read more

Anne was our tour guide, and as she says, she talks a lot. But that lot is informative, at times shocking and a ton of WOW moments about this great city and its endless history, some ugly, a lot beautiful and always interesting. I recommend you do this tour, and do it early in your trip to get oriented to the city. I would even consider taking a different tour with her. A real highlight of the trip. read more

Charleston Perspective Walking Tours - One of the many secret alleys Martha had us explore. - Walking Tours Near Me - Charleston, South Carolina

This tour is definitely worth taking. Anne offers a unique perspective on the history of Charleston. You see many of the key places that every tourist wants to see (The Battery, Rainbow Row) but also a lot of interesting places off the beaten path. She has lived here all of her life and it is reflected in the tour and the color of life in Charleston. While the history that everyone knows about Charleston is primarily focused around the Civil War (or as older residents refer to it, The War of Northern Aggression), Anne starts with the history of the original settlement of Charleston, the old walled city, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War periods. Charleston' role in the slave trade is also discussed The day we took the tour was hot and Anne takes this into consideration by making a point to stop in shady places to give her talks. The tour goes through back alleys, narrow streets and narrow alleys between houses (all public property that you wouldn't necessarily know about as a tourist) and ends at her parents house for lemonaide in the courtyard Well worth taking read more

Fantastic! Anne as a true Charleston resident shared delightful stories about not only the area but the people. Her tour was conducted on a hot summer day but she did her best to weave us in and out of shade to make the walk not too exhausting. Her depth of knowledge for the area was extensive with facts shared in a conversational manner. Worth taking the tour. Have fun in Charleston, a great little city with charm galore. read more

First trip to Charleston and we wanted to learn about the city's rich history and we are so happy we chose this tour! Martha was awesome, 13th generation living in Charleston and her knowledge and passion for the city was obvious. Such an awesome tour. If you want a good overview of the history of the Holy City, do this. Walking is the best for a tour in this city since you can walk through narrow alleys and down paths buses/carriages can't reach. Highly recommend. Probably worth more than what you pay. read more

This walking tour was perfect--two hours--just the right blend of historical stories and architectural information to make one feel that she has a sketch of the historical treasure of Charleston. Anne paints some broad strokes to give historical context; points the direction of very well-known areas to come back to and then takes the group to tour more unique sites with interesting facts. She also deftly and accurately discusses the complicated subject of the city's (and country's) history of slavery without balking. I highly recommend this tour. Also, she from a long-standing Charleston family--her personal and family anecdotes add much to the tour. read more

Our guide was Martha who is Anne's sister. Having get information from a 13th generation Charleston citizen firsthand was great. Besides the obvious history, she fascinated us with her personal stories of growing up in Charleston. She knew all the the nooks and crannies of the historic district. Martha even took us to her parents house which was built in the 1700's. It was the best tour we have ever had. I'd give it more that 5 stars. read more

A charming and informative tour from a woman who is 13th generation Charleston resident. A great introduction to the history of this town.

I was so pleased by Anne and her personality as well as her education and organization of the walking tour. We met at the Customs House and as the tour progressed she was strategic in organizing the tour for multiple opportunities to sit down, sit in the shade and take occasional breaks for folks. She is so sweet and friendly, beautiful stories about the city and cool spots to walk through the city. The last stop is her families house and she shares some good ol' fashioned lemonade with the group. How sweet! read more

We took this tour yesterday, a Monday, to get a better sense of the history of Charleston from someone who has lived here her entire life and comes from a long line of Charlestonians(not sure if that's a word haha). But anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed our time with Anne, our tour guide. We booked a morning tour, but it was rainy,so Anne texted us prior to the tour to see if we could make it at 1pm. I really appreciated how well she kept us in the loop via text messages. So we met up in Washington Square Park and there were 7 people total in our group. Anne welcomed us all, asked us where we were from etc. So for the next two hours, she had us walking all around at a good pace, while she told us stories of the history and how it relates to modern times, as well as her experiences growing up here. Anne was funny, talkative, and answered questions whenever we had them. I'm not a history buff, but Anne definitely made it an interesting for us. She also focused on the amazing Charleston architecture. At the end, she took us to her family's beautiful old house(actually seemed like several buildings) and into their courtyard where she offered us lemonade. Definitely recommend this tour! read more

One of the best walking tours we have ever had! Martha has a love for the city of Charleston. Being a 13th generation and archeologist, she was able to provide a picture of Charleston that is unique. The paths down the alleyways, the smell of the sea, the firsthand knowledge that the wealth of the city was built on the backs of slaves. It was so enlightening. Every time I saw a reed grass basket at the open market, I knew that the person who was making it was a descendent from the Gullah. We were so happy we booked with Martha, especially when we saw the very large groups of people making their way past us. We were an intimate group of 4 and at the end, the surprise was a true inside look at her long history in the area. Her parents B & B. I will say no more because it was a treat that was surprising. Thank you! read more

What a great walking tour. I found myself in Charleston for an extra day following an interview, and I decided to do a tour to see more of the city. There are many tour companies, but I liked what I read about Anne's tour and how she included personal touches. And this was so very true! Anne has a wonderful sense of humor, and she truly makes you feel like you are learning about this fantastic city from a true local! The tour does not feel like one of those tourist-y type gatherings but rather Anne takes you to off-the-grid places you'd never think to visit. She supplements all of her rich knowledge of history with childhood memories, which makes for a truly unforgettable tour! Would highly recommend this tour to anyone who, like me, has never been here and needs a baseline knowledge of the city from which to build a great trip! read more
