All of my close family members are buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL. As soon as I uttered St. Mary's, I was shut down. My mother's wake and funeral were in 1995, and my brother's wake and funeral were held at T&K in 2017. There was no problem, and our family was satisfied with everything. Both of these times, our dealings were with the same woman. My less than satisfactory experience with my husband's wake and funeral were overseen by a man (I won't even use his name). The estate sought $10k (the value of the ringS) to have them remade. A little over $5k was received. Maybe they are referring to what they had to pay their lawyers to protect the business status and tire out our family when we tried to collect the full amount? It is unclear. They would need to provide that information. But thank you for the traumatic experience , money cannot "handsomely compensate" that pain away. New ringS will not bring back the generational sentiment they represented to me. This is also the first official apology and accountability I have received from the funeral home outside of the disruption at the service. At the end of the day, in my opinion, this is a business that needs to protect their business. I am another "customer" whose mom's body the business was processing as quick as they could to fit more business in. The response mentioned about being human - I feel they forget their customer's are human. I feel they forget their "inventory" was someone's mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister. In my experience, that was made clear. ----------- The funeral home cremated my mom's rings by accident when cremating her. It makes me question how her remains were handled. I was then followed around and watched at the church by the owner and someone else from the funeral home for the entire service. If I had to guess it seemed they were fearful that we would be talking about the incident with others at the service. They also kept trying to force interaction with myself and 3yr old daughter (who clearly did not want to talk to two strange men). At one point, I was even cornered by the owner DURING the service discussing what had happened after we specifically said we did not want to discuss it during the service. The aftermath in dealing with them was completely unprofessional and traumatic for me. There is something off going on there.

From our first meeting with Bob Lawler, one of Matz' employees, the service, the advice and the attitude were all top-notch. One thing I especially appreciated was that everything was low-key and respectful, with absolutely no sales pressure about anything, from the details of the visitation and service to the choice of casket. When I met Paul Matz on a later visit, I complimented him on this, and he explained that none of their employees work on commission. That's the advantage of dealing with a long-established family business, I guess. On the day of Mom's visitation/service, Brian Peterson was very helpful and made sure that everything went smoothly. And I was also very pleased with the minister Matz found for us. (The chaplain from Mom's nursing home, who otherwise would have done the service, was out of town that weekend.) Obviously, I hope not to have need of a funeral home for a long time, but if the need arose, I'd go back to Matz without hesitation.

My grandmother looked nice, and was treated respectfully and made up well, but she didn't look a thing like herself. Only from certain angles at certain distances did it look like her at all. I understand that bodies never look the same as they did in real life (I think it's something with the mouth...) but my grandmother really looked different. She wasn't badly done by any means, but we were all in agreeance and all surprised. Otherwise, though, they seem like a lovely place. The staff here are wonderful people and they are always accommodating for even the person who is confused by the process. My neighbor waked his mom here and I saw first hand how well they were treated and how very professional they do treat everyone. Its still a bit of a 70's feel but nonetheless, what they lack in look (although it is tastefully done and very clean) they make up for in service. And I can appreciate how they can make a person who has died still look alive. (I once did make up for the dead so I can spot the ones who care) and they do so care here on how a person looks. My advice is though, always take them several photos of your loved one and if possible of different angles, this helps in the process of tonality and actual realness.

This is a small home, older than most, but it is clean and neat. The ladies room was nice and had a small sitting area with a nice sofa. There is a small parking lot in the back, but there is plenty of street parking off of Stony Island. It was good to see that they were observing COVID protocols...everyone was required to wear masks and they room was limited to number of people that were in attendance. Not sure if they are actually involved in the preparation of my aunt's body, but I have to say she looked amazing, like she was sleeping. The service itself was nice, but I wasn't all that crazy about the minister that gave the eulogy. It's not the first time I have been to a service where the person didn't know anything about the person they were speaking of, so the eulogy tended to wander off track. Not sure what the bald eagle being on the endangered species list had to do with my aunt, but it was mentioned. Prior to him delivering his sermon, many of us got up to speak about my aunt. I guess I was hoping he would take note of what was said about her and work off of that. That didn't happen, so hence the bald eagle story. Definitely hoping that I don't have to come back here too soon, but otherwise the service and execution of it was a good send off from my aunt.
