The beach is named after a Seminole leader and what makes it so special is that it is divided by a tidal lagoon. The developed lagoon side is an important bird habitat and it has amenities like a playground and restrooms. To reach the beach side you wade through the lagoon which is about 50 yards and which allows you to reach the waters of the Gulf. If you prefer not to walk through the lagoon you can walk around the lagoon to the south to reach the beach in about 20 minutes. The main part of Tigertail Beach across from the lagoon is Sand Dollar Island or Sand Dollar Spit. The area was an off shore sandbar completely surrounded by water until the winds of Hurricane Wilma and erosion connected it to Marco Island. It is known for its incredible deposits of sand dollars, giving it the name and making it a favorite spot to find sand dollars and shells. Adjacent to the park is Big Marco Pass Critical Wildlife Area managed by the state and it is a resting site for a variety of migratory shorebirds. Tigertail Beach is a birding hot spot during spring and fall migration. It is a part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, one of the longest running programs of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The trail consists of more than 500 wildlife viewing sites across the state. Things to keep in mind, if you are going to to the beach pack what you can carry if you plan on crossing the lagoon. Most people carry their belongings overhead. Parking is ten dollars to park or a Collier County beach pass. if you like a beach adventure and nature, this may be the experience for you.

And if you are walking barefoot, the beach is very shelly, not the white soft sands and some of the other beaches we visited in the area. I couldn't have seen these when I tried it on in the store so I drove back to the store to ask to exchange it. The ladies working graciously allowed me to exchange the top. I go back to our room put the bathing suit back on only to notice the top I just got and the bottoms were two different colors of blue AND the top was missing padding. I waited until today to try and return the bathing suit because I was told the owner would be at the store today. I entered the store asking for the owner. I explained my story and she apologized and ask me if I would like to exchange it for a different color. I explained it was the last one in my size and she said allow me to give you a refund, which is not their policy. I also offered her the 2 free t-shirts they had given me (one because of my purchase amount and the other because of my exchange hassle yesterday). The owner told me to keep the t-shirts because my honesty was so refreshing. I thanked her repeatedly for allowing me to return the bathing suit and for allowing me to keep the t-shirts. 4 stars since the bathing suit quality was iffy but 5 stars for the service.

He knew so much…read moreabout the ecology and wildlife in the area so we learned a lot as well as taking a nice 3.5 hour kayak tour. I would suggest for those considering the Keeywaydin/Bay Cave Tour to be somewhat skilled in kayaking since the areas you cross over are shared with boat traffic so the wake can get a little intense - but we had fun! Enrique also took and shared pictures of us on our tour which was very thoughtful. I also scheduled a paddleboard tour a few days prior which they had to cancel due to wind issues. They issued me a refund but I was more than appreciative that they were an honest company that would look out for the weather conditions and advise against being out in bad conditions - I don't think it would have been much fun getting tossed around in 20 mph winds on a paddleboard. Boy does…read moreshe know her way around that place - tunneling through the mangroves was so much fun... wooohooo, I want to do it again!!!! It was more than what we expected and learned so much. The birds, fish & all sorts of critters were all over the place. The following day, we went on the boat assisted kayak tour which was equally amazing, we learned so much about the 10,000 islands and the history of the mangroves. We saw so many amazing birds including various varieties of pelicans, osprey, eagles doing their thing out in the wild. We also saw many dolphins up close. One island had a small racoon running around on it -- the tour guide explained that they are smaller than usual racoons for various reasons -- google it, or better yet, take the tour :-) We stopped at an oyster bar -- no, they don't sell oysters, but the sand was so white and beautiful and shells and crabs of all kinds everywhere. We kayaked around one of the mangroves to get up close and personal with nature -- it was simply an amazing experience and you don't want to miss. Both tour guides were incredibly knowledgeable.

The boat was comfortable, and the ride was smooth. We were at low tide, so our captain had to be very cautious where he went. The mangroves are pretty, but once you saw 10 islands, it was probably enough. We got to see a few dolphins, and he got two of them to surf the boat waves which was fun. Our little stroll on the one island turned up a few interesting shells. Overall, I think the trip is too long as you just keep seeing the same things, island after island. There weren't really as many birds as I anticipated.

Cheap towels 3 for $10 (Marco branded ones for $10), tshirts, flip flops, 35 types of sunscreen that's twice as much as Walgreens back home (which only has 5 types)...duh! This is where to go. It is exactly what you expect and it is here. Want a cheap Tshirt? Drive 20 miles back to the Walmart on the mainland. This store is convenient, lots of parking, and you can buy the perfect ugly keepsake your 5 year old will treasure or swimsuit you forgot. Suck it up buttercup! You are on an island with limited options so just buy it, quit complaining and get to the beach. I dropped the review to four stars. For the volume of customers they really need more than one register open (very very long lines) and the hand dryer in the locker bathroom (you have to ask for a key from a hard to find clerk) does not work.
