Not to be confused with the 'Rainforest Express', this is a tram ride through the Waitakere ranges run by volunteers at the Waitakere Tramline society. It's a little tricky to get there so you would need to consult the website rather than me with my rubbish navigation skills trying to explain it. The tram only seats about 20 people so booking is essential. The ride goes through the Waitakeres and there are some beautiful views, not only that but the crisp clean air makes you feel you are a million miles from Auckland. It goes through a tunnel where you can see the gloworms above - very exciting for kids. It stops for a break and you can get out and walk around. You can see where the reservoir for all the water that is supplied to Auckland - it was quite down in its levels due to the drought. Overall, a nice activity to do on the weekend especially for families. read more
