Mt Eden--wow. I don't even know where to begin... I will say that if you get the chance to come up here, you can skip the Sky Tower, although that has its own unique experience. Mount Eden, the neighborhood itself, is an absolute gem with lovely people and houses with beautiful fruit trees on their front yards--definitely worth a walk to get away from the city center if you want to experience more of the residential areas. Walking up to the top is a little tricky if you don't know your way around--not every entrance will lead up to the main attraction. We accidentally walked from the Normanby Road side, and let's just say that it lead to a few unconventional ways to finally get on the right path... The views are definitely breathtaking and although it's not much tough of a hike up, just please, please, please don't forget your sneakers and comfortable clothes--you will need those. I don't think there's anywhere else you can get an extraordinary, raw 360 view of Auckland in its natural realm. You can see everything beautiful that Auckland has to offer, from the cute villages, the CBD, to the islands surrounding--fantastic scenery at its best. It was also fascinating to see and meet some strong runners who ran up to the top because the elevation is pretty high! This was probably one of the top highlights of my stay in Auckland because it was extremely fun and challenging getting up there, but the reward was so much better.

This is a must-do when you are visiting Auckland. It's easy to get to, and a great place to kill a few hours. My wife and I walked all the way up from the harbor and it wasn't too bad, but we were definitely happy to hang out for a while once we arrived. The crater is really cool to look at, and the views really are amazing. Everything is well-marked, and it is definitely a popular spot for tourists, so don't expect to be the only people up there. Still though, well worth it...and best of all, it's free!

The summit of Mt Eden is spectacular. It's the perfect place for an Auckland adventure, especially for those on a tight budget because it doesn't cost a thing. The full 360 degree panorama you see of Auckland is amazing. The crater itself is really cool to look down on too, and let's be honest, who isn't fascinated my volcanoes? The views from My Eden are awesome during the day, and at night it's quite a different experience. Seeing the sea of lights in all directions is simply beautiful and I love this night view of Auckland. The gates close at 9pm though, so if you are planning to drive up for the night view, make sure you get there well before they kick you out.

Mt Eden is a classic tourist destination but is also a great place for Auckland natives to spend a sunny day. From the top of the mountain you can see the ENTIRE CITY; from the North Shore, to CBD, the airport to the Waitakeres - you have a complete panorama. As a kid my parents used to take me up there and we would try and spot our house and play in the enormous volcanic crater. Today the crater is strictly off limits due to corrosion, however trying to identify my house and other favourite places is still a fun time. Take a picnic up Mt Eden, or grab some fresh fish and chips from Eden Village and enjoy the spectacular view of New Zealand's biggest city. Just make sure you take a jacket - even in Summer the wind can be pretty wild up the mountain. Tip: LOCK YOUR CAR. Although Kiwis are generally pretty trusty, people do frequently lose their valuables and passports up Mt Eden.

Perfect Auckland Day!!

Gives you a whole lot of perspective on how beautiful Auckland and NZ really is, love this place.

Mt Eden is one of Aucklands many Volcanic monuments located in the CBD. It is a perfect place to go for a walk or run, to show friends and family (not from Auckland), or to even enjoy the view yourself; receiving 360 degree views of Auckland city. You are able to drive right up to the summit, however if it's a glorious day that can get quite busy so there is parking conveniently located at the bottom of the mountain. There is now a shuttle service that will take you up the top from the lower car park. This is a perfect idea if you have small children, elderly, or would rather not walk up. Mt Eden has spectacular views and certainly worth checking out.

Well, that is certainly not the case these days. At Crafternoon Tea specifically, you'll find cool terrariums and succulents, beautiful prints of pencil drawn animals (look at the photos), modern jewellery and these adorable woolen hot waterbotttle covers (ok, so that's sounds a little nanna-ish but trust me, they're cool). The fair runs one Saturday a month from 10am - 2pm in the old church at the top of Bond St. Head along first thing and then stop in at one of the many cafes nearby to refuel. It's usually packed with loads of stalls and people milling about them. There's everything from soap, to clothes, cupcakes, jewelry and more. And the best thing about it is that anyone can have a stall for around $30. However, they stress that it needs to be handmade or retro and nothing imported can be sold. I think this is such a good idea to keep the market, well, a market. It's so great to see local people using local resources to create awesome Kiwi products. They also have lots of tutorials on their website that show you how to make some of your very own handmade delights.

The beach is small but not overly crowded, and there is even a dock in the water for kids (or adults haha). There is a grassy area right by the beach if you want to chill out in the shade for a while. That would be a great spot for a picnic! There is street parking available but no car park. This probably helps keep it not so crowded There are public bathrooms with showers to wash the sand off, but make sure to bring your own soap or hand sanitizer as the bathroom doesn't stock soap. Overall this is a great beach if you're looking to catch some sun - there isn't much shade on the beach but if you want some, head on to the grass. Make sure to bring your own water and snacks! It's based in a residential area so you won't have lots of food and drink options.

Parking can be a bit difficult during the summer but there is also plenty of street parking before the Coyle Park car park. It's off-leash for dogs all the time during the winter and before 9am and after 7pm during the summer. The only real important thing to be mindful of is the tide. Pt Chev beach is incredibly tidal so if you rock up during low tide expecting to go for a swim it ain't gonna happen. Likewise, if you arrive expecting to go for a beach walk at high tide, it will prove nearly impossible. Otherwise, Pt Chev beach is one of those places that makes Auckland such a great city to live in.

So, seizing on the opportunity to write reviews for Yelp I decided it would provide a great opportunity to sight some galleries around Auckland that I had not yet seen since moving here last year. NKB on Mt Eden Road was holding an exhibition titled 'Impressions' (28th March till 16th April 2013) when I went in to have a look at both the gallery and the art. Neither moved me all that much I am sorry to say. The gallery was very small, boxed in and simplistic with its stark white walls and typical timber flooring. Now, this could be just me to some extent, a personal review remember, not a critic. I like 'old school' art and unique 'old school' galleries. So modern fine art is not really up my alley, now having said that the one piece that I did admire, just a little, was a piece called 'Lone Tree Wangamui' by Matt Palmer, a simple print that made an impact with its line work, colouring and composition. The gallery does have a more varied collection of fine art in the stockroom that can viewed on the website too.

It is a sad thing that it has become common place to be ignored, or even looked down upon, by staff in art galleries. I was almost stunned as I entered nkb and the staff member politely finished his phone call and offered information on the exhibition, all without forcing a brochure into my hand and peering over my shoulder. This small Mt Eden shows off some great art, of various techniques, by up-and-coming New Zealand artists alongside some more familiar names. An inviting gallery I will be sure to keep an eye on in the future.

Khartoum Place is a square situated between Kitchener and Lorne St in the heart of Auckland city…read more It is right beside the Auckland Art Gallery and is just as worth a visit as the gallery is. The Place is characterized by a multi-level waterfall and paintings of the Women's Suffrage Movement - a part of history very important within New Zealand, as we were the first country to give women the right to vote. This pedestrianed square therefore acts as a memorial to women's suffrage. Not only is a Place the quickest way to cut through from the university to Queen St, it is also a lovely place to meet friends for lunch or coffee. A downside however is that it doesn't get much sun so it can be quite nippy there in the late afternoon. I recommend taking a jumper and grabbing a hot drink from the Esquires cafe located directly opposite the Place.

The surrounding buildings give the square a feeling of being a semi-enclosed outdoor room, while the two large plane trees set in the middle of the square always keep it feeling cool and secluded. It's somehow serene in a way that belies its central city location, and ever so slightly grungy with the arty types (and homeless) that often occupy the space. The stairs that take you up to the Art Gallery are a tiled artwork/water feature commemorating the Womens' suffrage movement, so there's even a bit of history built in. In short, this little square has character in spades - great place to just sit and people watch.
