    Waco Suspension Bridge
    Bruce K.

Completed in 1869 (That's not a typo. 1869.), the bridge crosses the Brazos River in Waco. A major undertaking at the time due to Waco's remote location, it was considered to be a marvel of engineering. More than 3 million bricks make up the twin double towers. The cables that make up the bridge were brought in by wagons. The first suspension bridge in Texas, it was built to be wide enough for stagecoaches to pass each other. Or for cattle to cross on one side of the bridge while pedestrians crossed on the other. Yes, as the only bridge over the Brazos, Waco was a critical stop on the Chisholm Trail that was used to drive cattle to the railroads. There have been no tolls to cross the bridge since 1889. It has been open to vehicles, stagecoaches, and cattle until 1971 when it was reduced to pedestrians and bicycles only. [Review 821 of 2024 - 576 in Texas - 21852 overall]

Cool bridge in Waco, TX. It's cool to walk around and check out the area. Great place to work out and go for a walk!

Such a cool piece of history. Bridge built in 1870 and updated and maintained by Waco. Cool sculptures as you enter with markers and a great smooth place to walk. Even works for those with walkers or wheelchairs. It's a great place for visitors and locals to hang out and enjoy the sights.

"I've seen the bridge and the bridge is long And they built it high and they built it strong" (Elton John/Bernie Taupin) It seems as though half of Waco is under construction with barriers and road closings everywhere. Our hopes to visit the famous Waco Suspension Bridge fell victim to all of that construction. The bridge was closed so we couldn't walk across it. The best we could do was see it from the Riverwalk, so this review is heavily skewed towards the Riverwalk, and its features and statues on both sides of the Brazos River. The Riverwalk is a very cool network of sidewalks, grass paths that either run along the riverbanks or are slightly elevated to a higher level overlooking the river. We saw a variety of animal statues as you approach the zoo, and a series of memorials honoring the war dead from various American wars. You'll get magnificent views of the Brazos River and that Waco Suspension Bridge.

Decided to take a drive to Waco to check out their suspension bridge. Noted as the 1st bridge across the Brazos River, opened in 1870 as a toll bridge but is now for foot traffic only. There's plenty of free street parking along the River, great shaded areas along the banks for fishing, picnics or chilling! Nice paved paths on both sides of the River for a leisurely walk. Plenty of photo opportunities with large bronze statues of cattle and cowboys and a WWII memorial across the bridge.

This has to be one of the most romantic spots in Texas. Best time to see it is during sunset on a clear day. This 1870 bridge attracts many visitors and when you see it from a distance the beauty of the design stands out. The southern entrance (downtown side) starts out by seeing a collection of cattle sculptures called "Trail Boss & Longhorn" all leading to get on the bridge where this was part of the Chisolm Trail. The suspension bridge has large towers providing an entryway for pedestrians. The wood deck reminds you this had history to a time before concrete or asphalt. The views as you walk provide many photo spots. As the sun sets the lights on the bridge starts to shine and sparkle. You can touch and feel the steel and cables supporting this bridge and imagine how it was like to have horse pulling wagons and hundreds of cattle crossing the Brazos River. I noticed some have brought a Paris tradition here my placing "love locks" on the fence along the bridge. So whenever in Waco take some time to experience the ambience of this bridge.

It's hard to believe that this bridge was once used solely for cattle crossings. Over a century ago, you would be charged 5 cents per each head of cattle to pass over this historic bridge. Back then, it was the only way to cross over the Brazos River. Fast forward to today, and it is now hailed as a historical Texas landmark. It is now used as a pedestrian passing and connects Indian Spring Park to Doris D Miller Park. Throughout the year, many festivals and fairs are thrown at Indian Spring Park just outside of the bridge. Many locals and tourists gather here on Independence Day to watch fireworks and to walk the bridge at night. The views of the Brazos River from the bridge are so serene. Other bridges are also viewable along the path. There are obvious signs of wear and tear, but it is still standing strong after 100+ years of operation. It's truly a beautiful structure, and a must see while visiting the city of Waco.

This is a great place to explore, take photo or just relax. There are paths to under the bridge to walk on. The area is nice, well kept and clean. It is not far from the Magnolia market area. Parking is on the street, at least where we parked. It is beautiful to enjoy on a nice day. It was a great area for the kiddos to roam, climb and explore.

We headed here after dinner at Cricket's for an evening stroll to get the wiggles out. When we arrived there was a man riding a super tall unicycle! It was so fun! We took some pictures and a took a walk across the bridge! It was a beautiful night!

The Bridge itself was under construction. We still got to see some great side views and saw a massive amount of Ducks. Under the Brazos River.

I find it odd that the suspension bridge has a Yelp page but it's such a quintessential part of Texas history and it's certainly an iconic Waco image. It was crucial to the growth of the town back in the 19th century. I've known the Baylor swing dance soceity to occasionally hold a dance on the bridge. More popular though is tortilla tossing. People toss tortillas over the bridge over the water and try to get it on a landing maybe 10 to 15 feet away. It's possible, fun and relatively inexpensive. There are often ducks and other waterfowl that eat the excess tortillas that inevitably fall into the Brazos. Some folks also like to take pictures here during the daytime.

Part of the cattle drive? Really? What an amazing bridge with great views of the Brazos River. Be sure to check out both sides. Good area for walking and talking a break, especially if you are on a road trip up or down 35. There seems to be plenty of parking, though I would not leave valuables in plain sight. Minus one star for all the creepy people loitering about. Nothing bad happened, and we were not approached, but it did give the area a weird vibe. Learning about the "Tortilla Toss" was kinda of interesting. Should I tell you or do want to learn for yourself? Bottom line: If in Waco, it's definitely worth checking out (and not too far from the Dr. Pepper Museum).

"We can beat them, just for one day We can be heroes, just…read morefor one day" (David Bowie) Ever see that dopey 2001 Pearl Harbor movie with Ben Affleck and  Kate Beckinsale? For my money, the movie's greatest scene revolved around Cuba Gooding, Jr. He played the role of a cook aboard the USS West Virginia when it was torpedoed by Japanese bomber planes on December 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The movie shows him cradling his dying superior officer in has lap, then in a rage manning an anti-aircraft machine gun and without any training on the weapon, shooting down several Japanese planes. That movie character was based on a real man and the actions depicted in the movie are real. The Navy cook's name was Petty Officer Second Class Doris (Dorie) Miller of Waco, Texas. He was an athlete, and played fullback on his high school team. In 1939, when he was 20 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a mess attendant third class. Two years later, his heroism and resulting newspaper accounts of his actions made him an American hero. He was the first Black American to be awarded the Navy Cross for combat valor. Miller was killed in action just two years later when his carrier was sunk by a Japanese submarine. In his honor, the Navy named an escort frigate after him (The USS Miller) in the 1970's. A nuclear powered aircraft carrier to be launched in 2029 will also be named in his honor. The memorial is located on the grounds of Doris D Miller Park on the banks of Brazos River in close proximity to the famous Waco Suspension Bridge. The memorial shows Petty Officer Second Class Miller standing tall and looking straight ahead in front of an abstract metal sculpture representing his ship. There are relief panels nearby that tell the story of this hero's life.

I wasn't asking for much just to be able to come by and see the possible space that we would be using and get the particulars on how much it would cost us or if it would take a percentage of the ticket sales that kind of thing. Several days went by without a response. So I actually called and got The Lovable Miss Congeniality herself Michelle who was about as helpful as a snake bite in the desert with no medical. She explained to me there's only one person that can help me and that's aaron. Turns out it took another several days to total an exact week before he got back to me. I responded by both Facebook Messenger phone text email and it was still another 4 days. After that I gave him a few Choice words and said I would be looking elsewhere which I did. So I narrowed it down to a couple in the area but did not like the pricing from those other venues so I thought it would go back to Hippodrome one more time and give them a second chance...bad idea. This second time when I emailed unfortunately Aaron was up to his old tricks and after hours and hours from an email that I sent which I know we got cuz he's a younger guy he's younger people get their texts and emails instantly they look at them and then decide whether to respond or not. I'm quite certain he looked at it and decided again like he did back in February not to respond in a timely manner and thus we're pulling the plug on any hope with the hippodrome theater and leaving them this well-deserved bad review. As far as a spectator I saw the Eagles wanna group a few years ago... it's like a tribute group to the Eagles and we were up in the balcony and it wasn't very comfortable and you had to kind of see through either the beams or some of the hand railing. It wasn't a very pleasant experience up there in the balcony. Other reviews have said that the food really sucks and is horrible. I don't know about that I cannot comment on that. The physical location seems cool because its historic it is right downtown Waco but they're giving this Historic Landmark a huge black eye by having p*ss poor customer service, ...actually nonexistent customer service.
