As a devoted animal lover, I only expect to see the best of the best conditions when it comes to animals in pet shop. I come into this shop to be sickened by the sight of not only 2 adult gerbils in a small 10inch square vivarium, but 2 adults with 4 juveniles and 8 newborns in unacceptable living conditions. Little food and no water when I visited, I requested to the worker on duty that there was no water in the tank and that she filled it. She filled the small water bottle half full and said that gerbils don't drink much water having gerbils myself, I know this, however that this is no excuse for animals in a vunerable position to not have access to clean drinking water 24/7. Once watered, ALL the gerbils scrambled to gain access to it, with at times 3 drinking from the bottle at one time. This is clear evidence to me that they have not had access to water in some time. It was awful to watch. I understand that gerbils whom have recently given birth should not be moved or handled after 3 weeks. However if the gerbils where brought in pregnant and the staff knew this why didn't they place the gerbils in a larger, more suitable home, in a quiet private place off shop floor! I think it's disgusting how they treat and present their animals and how little they seem to check on the vunerable. I avoid buying anything from this pet shop and other independant pet shops in Carlisle. read more
