Despite a plethora of 1-star reviews of Blackwell's online ordering service, the in-store experience is sheer delight. The selection (on multiple stories of the building) is simply stunning. Not wanting to come back home with a suitcase full of books (well, wanting to but loathe to carry them), my purchase here was a single book which I read in its entirety before leaving the UK. Bookstores which began their lives in the 1800's are rare finds. Blackwell's is one and they haven't endured due to mere good luck. Someone is paying attention to the look and feel of the place as well as the vast and deep selection of great reads. Blackwell's is a great place to get lost in.

It's not a large shop and it's absolutely stuffed with books. But it's a great place to browse and while away a bit of time. while the mix of books is quite eclectic they do seem to speciliase in Sci-fi and Fantasy novels - which is handy as that's the genre I often read. They will of course buy books from you for sale onwards in the shop. I've quite often taken a cardboard box of books down there when I'm having a clear out to see if they are interested in any of them. Beware that they are quite choosy, anything too worn, too big (!) or too obscure will be rejected and anything they are interested in won't net you much in the way of cash. I usually exit again with many of the books unsold and then go straight to the nearest charity shop and dump the rest there. The staff are friendly and helpful and this is a great shop to have in Hitchin town.

The books are arranged in various topics and it is easy to wander and find something you did not come here for. There is a tiny childrens section with a little chair for sitting which was great - as my son sat right down after a temper tantrum outside (he was sick of shopping!!) and got stuck into some reading !! Thank goodness -- a moment of relief and I was able to enjoy a moment reading the covers and opening the books and finally piccking out "bliss" a book about the geography of happiness.. cant wait to see how the Uk fares ! -

It is an independent business, which always goes down well. It is adorable in the way it is not too big, and the owners don't mind if you have a long browse through the shelves. Although it is small, it still manages to fit a variety of different books within its walls. The store has a real community feel about it. Like some of the other businesses on Broadway Market, there are little adverts for local events and things wanted and needed. As well as having staff recommendations in store, you can view them on the website, both current and past. The website can also keep you up to date with events held at the store.

They don't take refunds on statute books (a book which has the law of something on it, in my case…read morethe Companys Act, 2006 and related laws). Something they didn't tell me when I first purchased the product. Something that wasn't reflected in the receipt. Something that wasn't on a sign on the counter. All they could offer was "sorry". What is the reason for this, I asked? Because statute books can be photocopied and returned. But that is the same for ALL books in theory. Actually it is even less likely for statute books, because YOU CAN PRINT IT FOR FREE ON THE INTERNET. I imagine they must have other nonsensical policies out there just waiting to bite you. Out of principle, I won't be buying anything from this place ever. Amazon here I come.

I find a lot of coffee places just don't really want you stay and they have hard, uncomfy furniture to reflect that. But not here! This place often has events that extend its opening hours, too. My favourite is the 'big comfy folk club' which are folk and acoustic sessions hosted on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. Next one is on 4th March and tickets are only a fiver! Brilliant intimate venue, and the performers usually stick around for a while afterwards which is nice (: OH ALSO, WINE! The big comfy book shop serves alcohol! The owner spent over a year compiling books to open his shop, and ever since has kept a good variety of books that are unique to customers, or a popular search result of a used book. There is always fresh coffee, tea options, beer and wine, and some sort of snacks like crisps or cake for sale. Seating is available to hang out with friends for a little while or to start tucking into your future purchase. Also I noticed that live folk music nights and game nights regularly occur here too! Plus air-conditioning is extremely energetically demanding (much more than heating), so in the price of my drink I am effectively covering the cost of them making me feel unpleasant.

Like a portal to another world. You go down Hanbury Street, think you must've missed it and then...suddenly it's there. Stylish black shopfront with a nice inviting glow. This was only a very quick visit but I like how they do things in Libreria. First, I have to note that there was a Riga RP-1 record player with Velvet Underground & Nico on the turntable so...good start. No espresso bar here. No mobiles allowed. Comfy seating and little nooks to sit down and check out a book. Tick tick tick. Sally, Libreria's director, introduced herself to me and explained how things were laid out. Very friendly and helpful. Books are largely organised alphabetically, fiction on the left and nonfic on the right. However, within that, books are clustered into themes or ideas, in order to promote interesting combinations of books nestling next to each other. Great idea. Pure A-Z is so 2015. Also, they have asked celebs to do a mini-curation of their favourite books. Shami Chakrabarti's faves are currently on display. I think the idea is to change everything round every quarter. Events are also gonna happen here. I dutifully added my email to the mailing list on the front desk. Waterstones can do one.
