There is also a cafe upstairs that is Christian in its theme. My criticism of the shop would be that it is too small and lacks anything unique to set it apart from any other stores. I think it only survives due to catching footfall from the Post Office, and if it's just envelopes or pens your after, the Way Inn will serve you well. I wouldn't really recommend going in to get anything else though, as your choice is fairly limited.

What I like in particular is that there are always great discounted deals near the counter. I like that they have employed older people to work at the tills, they are extrememly friendly and the people working on the floor are very helpful and knowledgable. I visit WHSmith regularly for stationary despite there being cheaper alernatives because of the above reasons and the great quality.

Unfortunately I find the shop can sometimes be a little dirty and the service not amazing. This experience has been fairly typical of visits into W H Smiths around the country though, so is not anything unique about the Berkhamsted branch. There's not a lot you can buy in W H Smith that you can't get elsewhere, with more choice, but the magazine section is large, which is probably the highlight of the store.

It does fall a little between several stools in that I prefer to go to a specialist bookstore or music shop for these items. I do like the makeover that the WHSmith shops have gone through. There has also been a change in their working practices - if a queue starts to form, more staff are summoned to the tills immediately with a bell. This branch also has a major bonus - a post office in the store. I frequently buy cards and presents to post overseas and it's so convenient to be able to get the stamps at the same time. What's more - you can pay for WHSmith shop items at the post office tills to save you queueing up twice.

I was in dire need of stamps to mail out postcards for friends!! Fucked up majorly by not sending them out from Dublin but figured the UK was still a good option. One star for having the "Merlin" books. If you have to ask, then you won't get it anyway. One star for having the "Merlin" sticker collection book. One star for actually having packets of stickers that aforementioned sticker book needs. One star for the two employees that dealt with this eccentric American's need to get all sorts of "Merlin" memorabilia! Thanks WHSmith for being so fucking awesome! P.S. The post office is in the back of the book shop, so don't be discouraged if you don't see it right away. For a tourist like me it was better purchasing stamps here rather than at a souvenir shop because it was cheaper and more efficient (I don't need to spend £1 on a stamp to mail out a postcard that costs 25p). P.P.S. The book shop is a little smaller than you're average Barnes & Noble or Borders. In fact I think there was a Borders around Oxford St but has since been closed down (iPhone put one on the map for me, but my eyes found no such neon signage!).

This store had a nice artsy sort of selection of the type of books people read who live in the NW postcodes, meaning NW3,NW5, NW6. I think this is not a bad thing at all. W.E Lane Books also had an impressive sale selection. I found the Modern Jewish Girl's Guide to Guilt reduced from 15.99 to 5.99. You look around and see Penguin Titles mugs and 5 pounds of the Mighty Boosh Book (not sure if this is a desirable book to acquire or not, you decide). The staff also shows your their favourites, in a section. A good shop but can the Dylan. Yikes!
