My experience from staff member Joanne was nothing but a racist attack on black people. I walked into this branch without my mask on, Joanne (5ft 2, glasses, slim with short dark greyish hair) was instantly full of attitude towards me as she rudely gestured for me to put my mask on. I continued with my shopping and went to wait in the queue, my phone rang and I answered pulling my mask down. Joanne charged at me with complete fury telling me to pull my mask up, after a heated exchange I looked around and noticed two white girls without masks, they were then served by Joanne with no questions about their face masks. Shoppers then began to approach me about this woman's behaviour towards me which then led her to shout at me from across the till in rage. This then led to another showdown between me and the racist Joanne which was held in front of a store filled with customers and I left feeling upset and hurt. I had two white friends go into this store after my ordeal, neither of them wearing masks and one so happened to be served by Joanne, nothing was mentioned about him not wearing a mask. Which leads me to know this; Joanne is a racist, she truly believes she is entitled and wanted to try and degrade me as a black woman. I have resided in Cheltenham for a number of years and never have I ever endured anything like I did that day. In Cheltenham, W H Smith is located in the busy High St, opposite Boots Pharmacy and a short walk from a few banks (I am changing banks, so the proximity thereof is something of an important factor for my assessment of any street in any given town). Cheltenham's Smith stocks a fantastic range of magazines on what seems like all possible subjects, something I can mostly compare to Manchester's Arndale. The top floor has a marvelous selection of books and maps, as well as a post office. This book shop and newsagent is situated on the corner of the main high street. It stocks a very wide range of newspapers, magazines and greetings cards on the ground floor, and although there are always quite long queues, they are very fast moving as there are lots of tills. Upstairs there are hundred and hundreds of books - I was surprised at how many they manage to cram in! They also sell the usual stationery and gifts, as well as DVDs, CDs and games. I called into the store this afternoon as I had some vouchers to collect some Roald Dahl books from the Daily Mail. I asked the assistant if she could help me with locating these books and was informed that she did not work in this department and she usually worked downstairs. There was no suggestion of help to locate these books apart from informing me to try downstairs. I duly went downstairs and spoke to another young lady and asked her the question in respect of these books and she informed me that they would probably be located near the till points, but she took the vouchers and said that she would enquire about them which she duly did. I mentioned that the young lady I spoke to was most unhelpful and that she was not exactly busy and that I was disappointed with her attitude. Unfortunately, she did not have much luck in locating these books but she asked a colleague about them. He was able to locate the two of the books and he informed me that the vouchers were valid until Sunday 25th September 2016 for which I thanked him for his assistance. As a regular visitor to your shop I was extremely disappointed with the sales assistant's attitude. I have never encountered this type of service from your store before today. read more

I visited the store to buy family Christmas cards. When I got home one of the cards had no envelope with it. I returned to the store making a special visit car parking costing £1.50 to get the required envelope which the assistant robbed from another card of the same size. When I wrote my cards this week yet another card had a missing envelope which will require another visit to town and car parking. I have phoned and complained and was told that the envelopes are not always with the cards but are behind them. The supervisor and I agreed that if I had not used the self service till then the assistant would have checked everything for me. I feel somewhat aggrieved. The two cards in question cost a total of £8.00 and I will have spent a further £3 on return visits to get what I paid for. Perhaps a little more care could be given by the company when a premium price is being paid items. Wont buying cards here again! read more
